He announced that 2017 was his last year before he signed a one year deal back in January. So, I guess it's an offseason move?
Roland Alberg has left the Union, signing a 2-year deal with CSKA Sofia. http://cska.bg/index.php?main_page=document_general_info&products_id=5385
The cleansing season of roster purging has begun! https://www.philadelphiaunion.com/p...elphia-union-exercise-2018-options-11-players Declined options: A. Jones, Onyewu, Tribbett, Wijnaldum, Alberg, Edu, Herbers, Ilsinho, Davies Out of contract: Fabinho, Pontius Jay Simpson's contract is guaranteed through at least 2018. D'oh. His agent should be knighted.
Edu, Davies, and Onyewu all out in Philadelphia (pending possible re-negotiations). With those guys all on the wrong side of history and with varying degrees of injury history, I wonder if this winds up being the last stop for them, at least in MLS. (of course, Onyewu was semi-retired for 18 months before, so who knows).
https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017/11/01/report-kenny-cooper-trial-orlando-city-sc Speaking of semi retired, Kenny Cooper on trial with Orlando. Haven't played since 2015. Wonder what he's been up to for 2 yrs
I'm pretty sure the deadline on options is before the expansion draft. Everybody made announcements before last year's December 13 expansion draft.
I could see Edu having a part to play somewhere in the MLS as a backup or something if he takes a little paycut. His injuries might force him to retire though.
Edu made over $800k last season, so in his case a "little" paycut will probably need to be something in the range of a 90% paycut, maybe with some performance incentives thrown in.
I don't see where MLS has released the rules for this expansion draft yet, but in the past, teams were able to protect players, with everyone else exposed by default (unless automatically protected). Philadephia presumably already knows the guys that they will be protecting. These guys are presumably not among them.
RSL purchased the rights to Attacking Midfielder Jefferson Savarino through an option in his loan agreement. He has apparently signed a "long term deal." He is expected to be a Young DP. RSL fans are pretty excited by this as he really changed the attack last season when he arrived. He has also been getting looks recently from the Venezuelan National Team.
Orlando have announced some moves: https://www.orlandocitysc.com/post/...ty-sc-announces-2017-end-season-roster-update And the house cleaning in LA has begun: #LAGalaxy defender @robbierogers announces retirement from professional soccer: https://t.co/N1YGNzezY6 #ThankYouRobbie pic.twitter.com/ClyOyIspNQ— LA Galaxy (@LAGalaxy) November 7, 2017 #LAGalaxy have cut ties w/Jack McBean, Nathan Smith, Jaime Villarreal, Jose Villarreal and Raul Mendiola. Chris Rolfe and Justin Map both retired today, Rolfe due to concussions. They played in a combined 425 MLS matches and were shown just 28 yellows between them. Neither was ever sent off.
Montreal signed two players to homegrown contracts today. https://www.impactmontreal.com/en/p...ur-giguère-sign-mls-contracts-montreal-impact GK James Pantemis DF Thomas Meilleur-Giguère
Is there a Gals fan here that can tell us how many of these guys were home growns? If Wikipedia can be believed, all of them were. wow
Yes, all of them. The LAG academy has been excelling at producing huge numbers of USL quality players. To be fair, I don't think any of those cut would have been stars, but they also haven't done a good job of giving players chances. I hope Villarreal the Elder and Mendiola land on their feet somewhere else.
