By your logic Lewandowski, Hummels and Gundogan would all be at the club since nobody was getting big raises and we weren't signing big name players.

The answer is really simple. Develop players, buy diamonds in the rough and develop them. And then pay them big salaries. Players want to earn a lot AND play with top players. We already had an excellent squad back in 2012. All we had to do was raise the wage budget and slash the transfer budget. We obviously had the money since we paid 19M for Immobile, 10M for Ramos, 28M for Miki, 18M for PEA. And even if you take out the financial aspects of it, how are clubs like Atletico, Napoli, Juve (a few years ago) and Spurs able to hold onto their players despite strict salary budgets? They have a winning mentality, an ambitious coach and keep their core talent happy.

Aaaaaaaaaand this is why it pisses me off that the majority of BVB fans in Germany are happy with Watzke extending with the club.

Atletico Madrid do not have Premer League TV money nor are they owned by a Sheikh. They are also the 13th richest club on the world, whereas we are the 11th (according to Business Insider). However, they succeeded where we failed - maintaining the majority of quality they had and building around it. You could argue that the only real loss they suffered was Diego Costa and Felipe Luis, both of which are currently playing for them again and are doing it perfectly. You could even go as far as to say that they managed to integrate their ''prodigal sons'' better than what we did with Kagawa, Sahin and Gotze to some extent. All of their other stars - Griezmann, Koke, Saul, Godin are still there in spite of the relentless interest from the likes of Barca, Real, United, etc. If you look at their spending you could see that they brought back Costa for 60M and that is probably their only bombastic transfer. Atletico did not go on a PL club spending spree, going bonkers like United to sign luxury players for 100M and overrated strikers for 80M. They used the momentum to offer the backbone of the squad their fair share and keep bringing other quality players to compliment them and try to promote youth. It is evident to them that in an open bidding war they stand no chance to the behemoths, so they play their cards wisely, yet they offered 60M when they absolutely had to. And bear in mind that we only have Bayern as a huge domestic rival while Atletico have to worry about Barca and Real - the pinnacle of football in general. Somehow I fail to see Watzke splashing more than 35-40M on a single player and the mere fact that our wage structure is stuck in the 2010s is evident of his failure to move the club forward. The reality is that the major spending wouldn't have been ridiculous transfer sums, but rather an increased wage bill to keep that CL final core together and add rough diamonds to grow around it. Atletico did that and are reaping continuous success - 2 CL finals, constant deep runs on the very same CL and even managing to win La Liga. We, on the other hand, are struggling to make the CL and our performance there has declined drastically.

we are saying the exact same thing. and also, clubs like atletico, Napoli, Juve, and Spurs do not keep players. atletico lost Costa, Filipe Luis, and both Griezmann and Oblak look to be on the outs, and they use third party financing. We've had this discussion. Napoli lost Higuain to Juve, who I think are the only club on that list able to keep players, and even that is debatable, seeing as Vidal, Pogba, and a case can be made for Morata too who could easily have chosen to stay. And Spurs seem to have a rebelion on their hands with Rose and alderweirald refusing to sign contract extensions because of low pay, and this is pervading topic for some time now. If you analyse it, Harry Kane is one of their top earners at 100k a week. Common man.

Another fine example of Bayern paying off referees. Two questionable penalties. Just when Bayern needed a win, the ref was there to bail them out.

I am glad somebody saw it like I did. The first penalty the defender looked close enough to play the ball not sure how that is a foul on him, since he in all likelihood would have played the ball had the attacker not ran over him.

I think that second foul(?) was terribly soft and encourages the diving ******** to continue being a diving ********.

Well this sucks. Jonathan Tah extended with B04 and his exit clause is gone. Can we please get Mats Hummels back.

Well.....Bayern are at a turning point. They will have a new coach next season.

He's already got into situations where he's made it clear that his heart is still at BVB. If one of our players said those kinds of things about another club there would be a shitstorm here, on Twitter and in the media.

My sources tell me he isn't particularly happy in Munich. Maybe it's the new baby.

Back in 2013 I was 85% sure Mario Gotze would return. I am about just as certain that Mats would return as well. Also he's an Aki favorite.

So we finish the weekend in 2nd place. Hopefully, tomorrow we recoup two points between us and Bayern. It's not over until it's over.

Lol. 17 points behind, with only 10 games to go? It was over in November..

Good chance to start cementing second place tomorrow though, so the points are still crucial.

Today's lost points could come back to bite us. The coming games against direct competition for the CL positions will be tough. With only 3 points between us and the 6th ranked team, there is only a small margin of error. The next game is in Leipzig, we further have to play in Munich, Schalke and the last match is at Hoffenheim. We also have crucial home games against Leverkusen and the currently 4th placed Frankfurt.

Max Meyer rejected a Schalke extension. Let's dump Castro and get him. If Goretzka can go to Bayern, I don't see why Max can't move to BVB.

Before signing any more players, the club needs to first appoint an elite coach, and then pick players to suit his philosophy.

I hope not. This would be calamitous. Bild reporting that Stöger might get a new contract as early as April.

Are the management not watching the games? The results haven't been terrible, but the results haven't been good and have been a bit lucky. The only way I could see extending him is if you only compare points per game from before and after he was hired.

Screw this management. Watzke just wants someone malleable who won't question him and follow orders. Go after an actually ambitious choice like Nagelsmann or Jardim.

Why make a team of talented footballers play that boring passive style of football. Do the players even want to play with such tactics, most of them have regressed badly in recent months. Stöger will not get the best out of Pulisic, Weigl, Dahoud, Zagadou, Guerreiro and all the players who want to play offensive football. How will Watzke sell Dortmund's next big thing for 150 million euros if our trainer makes the players look like dog turds?

Why should Stoger get an extension? There been little evidence to suggest this would be a positive move.
