Catcher Gary Sanchez is being called up and will be in the lineup tonight. He's expected to be used primarily as a designated hitter. At Scranton this season, Sanchez hit .282 with 21 doubles, 10 homers and 50 RBIs.

Maybe last night's game will convince Joe Girardi that Luis Severino deserves to take Nova's spot in the rotation, not Green. I might add that it's time for Rob Refsnyder to play every day against all pitchers. How long must we endure watching Teixeira (.198) and Hicks (.188) out there more often than Rob. But Girardi doesn't seem to mind benching A-Rod (.204), even when he's only 4 home runs away from 700.

Well, these games still count for something and its not a home game. Those 2 factors probably led to the decision. Friday's game is less important and at home so he'll start that one I'm assuming.

Alex Rodriguez was the DH last night, batting cleanup. He went 0-for-4, but did get an RBI on a bases-loaded infield dribbler in the 8th inning. It seems he asked Joe Girardi if he could play 3rd base in his final game on Friday. Joe told him no. Rumors still flying that the Miami Marlins could pick A-Rod up after the Yanks release him.

Just thought I'd post the New York standings. It's been said this year that the Yankees had become a complete bore while the Mets have taken over the town as an exciting, sexy team...

A-Rod in his last game -- as a Yankee, at least -- went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in the 1st inning. He played 3rd base for one batter in the 9th, then was removed to a standing ovation.

Now, the future. Tyler Austin, acquired from the Indians in the Andrew Miller deal, and Aaron Judge have been called up. Since arriving at Scranton, Austin has batted .323 with 13 home runs and 49 RBIs. Judge batted .270 with 19 home runs and 65 RBIs at Scranton this season. Placed 7th and 8th in the Yankees lineup today, Tyler Austin and Aaron Judge just hit back-to-back home runs in their first major league at-bats in the 2nd inning. Holy cow! -- as Phil Rizzuto use to say.

The young guys had home runs flying out of Yankee Stadium on Saturday: Tyler Austin, Aaron Judge, Starlin Castro, Aaron Hicks, Didi Gregorius. The oldest is Hicks at 26 years, 10 1/2 months. Brad Davis hit two for the Rays. Homers drove in all runs scored.

The 1996 World Championship team was celebrated before the game. Mariano Rivera will be honored with a plaque in Monument Park on Sunday.

Aaron Judge continues to tear the cover off the ball, with an RBI double in the 4th for the only run the Yankees would need. Chad Green threw 6 innings, striking out 11(!) and walking none. And since returning to the Yankees, Adam Warren has appeared in 9 games (11 innings) giving up only 4 hits and allowing no runs.

Catcher Gary Sanchez continues to go berserk at the plate, with 9 home runs in his first 70 major league at-bats and hitting .389 with a .847 slugging percentage. He was intentionally walked twice last night after a 1st inning homer so the White Sox could pitch to Mark Teixeira instead. (And why is Tex batting cleanup anyway? He's got a .197 average and is slugging a whopping .330!)

Reliever Anthony Swarzak was put on the 15-day DL with shoulder tendinitis. Maybe he belonged there because of his sick numbers. Over his last 12 games, he gave up 11 runs (6 homers) for a 9.00 ERA. Ben Heller, acquired in the Andrew Miller deal, has been called up. In 6 appearances for Scranton since the trade, Heller is 0-1 with a 1.42 ERA and 1 save.

Joe Girardi is the 6th manager in Yankees' history to reach 800 wins, joining Joe McCarthy (1,460), Joe Torre (1,173), Casey Stengel (1,149), Miller Huggins (1,067) and Ralph Houk (944).
