Did you see the Flores sisters? Sabrina is trying to comfort her twin Monica, who is inconsolable (poor thing, I really feel bad for her).
89' 1-1 Pugh right ck, again over endline to -2m mid-left. Bleh. She's trying for bend and getting mis-hits? 90' 1-1 Crowther knees ball up centerline to 30m, finally gets closed down. Mexico switch right, Ogle clears a cross way back to RB #5 M.Flores at 35m wide right. Long high cross to 6-top left, #11 M.Sánchez jumps into Fox's back and pancakes her, heads a pop-up way over. Mexico are willing to live and die by these early long crosses. 90+1' 1-1 USA right ck, to 6m center, Barreras sprawling-catches. 90+3' 2-1 Off the punt, Palacios backpasses to Cruz at midfield mid-right, pass left to Crowther at 30m centerline. Pugh turns and chases, leans a shoulder into Crowther's right ribs, hooks ball free -- Crowther sprawls, ref rules all ball. Fox dribbles to circle back right, pings square right to Pugh. Pugh dribbles to circle top right, LB #7 Rodríguez is caught way high, pokes ball away toward far touch. Elliston one-touch pass up wide right for A.Sánchez sprinting through Rodríguez's zone at 27m, 1-v-1 on LCB #4 Bernal (who doesn't have the speed). A.Sánchez runs down wide right to 8m, jukes #4 Bernal down box right, turns corner to 2m mid-right. Soft backpass to Pugh at 7m 4-right -- Pugh dummies ball through her legs Ball rolls to 8m right post, Hedge one-touch right instep pull across mouth, wrong-foots Barreras, glances off #5 M.Flores's outside (right) foot -- and into left side netting just behind post. Heartbreak and ecstasy. 90+4' (of +4') 2-1 #11 M.Sánchez receives at box top wide left, jukes centerward past Riehl and Pugh, to arc top left, Ogle pokes ball loose. Palacios gains ball in a 1-v-2 spinning duel, loses it, Hedge blasts it downfield to Barreras. Mexico heave it past circle top left, Crowther flicks it high down wide left to M.Sánchez. She settles it at far touch, but -- the moving finger writes, and hath writ. FT 2-1. Gut punch. USA W-20s have this thing about backpass crosses from box right
Yes, playing on two different national teams. Not sure that's ever happened before. Germany has twin brothers playing on their youth team.
Wow! The US had two shots on target in the entire match, and we score on both of them. The offense may have been weak, but at least it was efficient.
The winning goal was collapse by the Mexican defense as a whole. 3 US players there in the box and only 1 defender, that can't happen if you want to win a game.
Not twins, but the Xhaka brothers played against each other (Switzerland vs Albania) at last year's Euros.
God she was awful. She looks very unsure and her distribution is sure lacking. She NEEDS to make those saves she gets her gloves on.
Well, we were lucky. Mexico seemed the better team until the late minutes -- which might be due to better conditioning on the part of US. But the Mexicans for 75 minutes looked more skilled and a match for the US in speed and size. Ashley Sanchez gets my vote for POTM. She did very little for most of the game but got the two assists near the end.
Casey Murphy looked shaky in this match, unlike the previous 3 matches (where she only really had one mistake). Mexico with 15 shots, 4 on target, 5 corners, 6 fouls, 1 YC USA with 4 shots, 2 on target, 4 corners, 8 fouls, 1 YC
There's several cases of siblings playing on different national teams: the Boateng brothers (Germany and Ghana), for example. But I can't think of any other twins who have competed against each other??
Right. Not sure if the Boateng thing has ever actually happened (in international play), since KPB was sent home from the 2014 world cup. They are also half brothers.
Seen almost all of your games. What strikes me is that the US has a very solid defense and they have goalscorers. But everything else seems to be lacking. The pass completion % today must have been awful. There is no build up out of the back what so ever and offensively everything is so vertical and predictable. But having a couple of difference makers and a good defense can go a long way.
For some reason our players looked more nervous than normal, until about the last 15 minutes. That goal by Maria Sanchez helped turn things around for the USA; they started playing less tentative/fearful. Of course, Watt coming off the bench helped. She has scored to late game goals coming off the bench. But our passing, gee whiz, was horrible. Korea DPR will shred us. I was hoping that it would be a night game, but alas.
Boot it up the field to Sydney Le...I mean Mallory Pugh and hope you connect. I doubt Jill Ell...I mean Michelle French's team will win the tournament.
