Filed under life's ironies. Penn St has 5 players on this team while several players from Stanford who were considered shoe ins to make this roster decided to try and win the College Cup instead. Both schools went out of the NCAAs in the same round.

Ampah overtakes on her left, light forearm nudge in the back sends Pugh sprawling down -- no call. Ghana advance to box top wide left, crosses intercepted but USA are horribly nervous, shanking clearances and quacking outlet passes to nobody.

11' 0-0 Scarpa plays Fox from 22m down box right, Ampah wins that race and passes away. Ghana effortlessly advance to 22m wide right, probe on the right -- loses ball over.

Cousins threads a pass up right touch to Fox at box top right touch, square pass to Scarpa unmarked at 16m mid-right. She turns and sends a square pass to box top center for Sánchez outflanking Ghana's defense, good settle-stop in her own wheelhouse -- right instep shot pulls just wide left low.

17' 0-0 Cousins fk at 24m box right, high to 6m center. GK Agyei jumps above the scrum and punches away, lands upon (and pancakes) #6 Otto. Sánchez knees ball to self at 15m arc right, rushed one-touch volley goes way high. Agyei stays down momentarily, holding legs ... resumes.

Jean volleys out to 25m center, Sánchez comes back to ball and volleys over own right shoulder upfield. Cousins fires a diagonal pass to 33m wide left for Pugh leaning past Abambila (and held way onside by LB Agyemang not on-line). Pugh outruns 3, cuts centerward to arc tangent left, shoots right foot sharp pull to left post, wrong-foots Agyei into 1/6 left back low. Replay shows that her shot nutmegs #15 Ampah's stretch-block attempt I blame Heath

36' 1-1 Fox receives 1-v-1 on LB #4 Agyemang just past midfield wide right, bends her run rightward toward near touch, pokes ball upfield and makes a sprint and Agyemang trips her with a late lunge thigh-jam. Foul, yellow card on Agyemang.

37' 1-1 USA fk at circle top wide right, sailed to 7m 3-right -- 2-v-2 all misjudge it, it bounces untouched and nobody reads the spin. Ghana clear to right corner flag, Scarpa tries to round #5 Anane and takes her down. Foul on Scarpa.

44' 1-1 Ghana advance to 6m wide right, cross to 6-top mid-right intercepted by Jean. Ghana seem to attack mostly down the right because they play through RM #8 Diwura-Soale.

45+2' 1-1 Diwura-Soale chips to Owusu-Ansah facing away at arc top right, back-header pops up gently to Murphy.

45+3' 1-1 Ghana left throw-in at own 30m, switch right to Diwura-Soale. She dribbles 40m into box top right, turns away 1-v-2. Square pass intercepted, USA clears upfield.

HT 1-1. USA's backline touches are a bit adventurous, but good enough so far. The midfield and front look ... adequate. Our attack is mostly individuals (Fox) trying dribble-drives past set defenders, which hasn't worked. Rarely, we actually have open teammates in the box, and we find them, but I think that's more a lapse by Ghana than anything we can construct.

47' 1-1 Adubea shoulder-rams Ogle(?) down at 25m arc left, takes ball to 22m arc tangent left, through-ball try deflected -- but again we pop it up high to nowhere instead of calmly clearing it away. Ayieyam roundhouse volley try blocked, ball topspins to Murphy at 8m.

53' 1-1 Pugh square pass left finds Jean racing up wide left, chased by Diwura-Soale. Jean goes to 5m wide left, cross bounces to Agyei at 3m 1/4 left.

54' 1-1 Jean advances to 25m wide left with no pressure near her, chips a cross to 10m left post, drops perfectly behind a defender. Sánchez slightly overruns ball, tries a hop twisting donkey flick -- wide right, and it misses Fox crashing far post. I like the idea, and the fact that we're doing this to Ghana's box. Also ... somebody's been watching Japan

 

If results hold, the group would get decided on fair play points.

Going into these games, neither France nor the US had received a booking. France just got a yellow card.

 

Short of a series of hand balls and own goals, I dont see Ghana getting two...it's bed for me.

 

56' 1-1 Ghana chip from ~22m wide right, ball bounces into box at 10m mid-right, Murphy scoots up to collect in front of a scrum.

58' 1-1 #12 Kuzagbe chases a ball to own endline wide left, clears it sideways along endline -- it skims off the flag pole, into near touch for a throw-in. She succeeded in saving the ck.

59' 1-1 Fox receives past midfield wide right, Anane tacks across her bow and bumps her down. Foul.

60' 1-1 USA fk at circle top wide right, sailed to 7m center. Agyei hop-catches turning away, Scarpa tries to duck-head ball loose and delivers a flying body slam into Agyei's right side. Agyei stays down. Ref calls the 2H cooling break to coincide.

61' 1-1 Agyei resumes, but quacks a bad moonball to Kuzagbe at 24m right touch. Sánchez darts in and shields her off ball, USA switch right but overhit a pass down wide right -- Fox(?) stops ball at 0.5m but runs past it, Ghana break up wide left.
