01' 0-0 Kickoff at 00:11 FS2Go stream timer. LB Jean plays Pugh down left touch to ~30m. Pugh wins a 1-v-1, ball skitters centerward -- Jean takes it and dribbles hard to endline mid-left, loses it 1-v-2. Aggressive look! 03' 0-1 GK Olla distributes to #6© Moore at box right. Square pass to #4 Anton at 15m arc left. Anton outsmarts self, does two cutbacks going square right. Sánchez challenges at 15m 1/5 right, steals ball right off Anton's foot in own stride, opens hips and taps right instep into back right low. Shock. #U20Femenino REVIVE el gol de Estados Unidos, gol de vestidor de Ashley Sánchez. #NZL 0-1 #USA https://t.co/uG8rYpoUYk— Telemundo Deportes (@TelemundoSports) November 17, 2016 08' 0-2 USA square pass left across circle top to Pugh at circle top mid-left -- #3 Stewart-Hobbs steps up just-late, Pugh taps past her and has space down box left. Pugh curls centerward along arc top to arc left, opens a tiny window alongside #6© Moore, blasts right instep bend past shell-shocked Olla, golaaaaaazo into 1/4 left back 1/3 high. Awe. #U20Femenino REVIVE el segundo gol de @ussoccer_ynt ¡GOLAZO! de Mallory Pugh. #NLZ 0-2 #USA. #U20WWC https://t.co/0TPWXfde0S— Telemundo Deportes (@TelemundoSports) November 17, 2016
15' 0-2 New Zealand advance to 30m box right, make a couple of passes, long switch left lost. Their first sustained foray across midfield ... 17' 0-2 DeMelo hooks ball to self at 21m center, shot blocked back to Ogle. Ogle touches forward to arc top right, shoots just wide left low as Olla dove. 19' 0-2 Pereira rolls a long through-ball try from circle top box left through arc left, just too hard, rolls to Murphy. 21' 0-2 #13 Satchell runs from circle top mid-right to arc top, crosses to #9 Puketapu at arc top. Puketapu shoots hard into legs, USA a tad nervous passing away but have about 6-2 advantage. 24' 0-2 Pugh stutter-drives past Satchell at 14m box left, darts to 3m mid-left and creeps toward 6-left -- backpass or cross blocked back to Satchell behind her. Pugh regains at wide left, cross blocked over. 25' 0-2 Pugh left ck, short to Sánchez coming to ball at 5m box left. Backpass to Pugh at 12m wide left, rolling shot/cross to left post low, olla sprawls and blocks but ball pops free. otto stands at 6-top left, almost gets a touch -- chases the bounce over endline left. 27' 0-2 Fox nutmegs somebody (#18 Jale?) at 10m wide right, LB Morton clears upfield. USA resume the team-handball-like large-arc probing with quick passes and some movement. I think they're grumpy from the France game, and they want to play like that 30' 0-2 USA ping across circle back, probe up right touch. Ogle receives at box top right touch, drives to 1m wide right, New Zealand poke ball into far touch? 31' 0-2 1h "drinks" break (as this Brit pbp guy says). I could go for that
USA off to a dream start in this one. Great individual play by Sanchez and Pugh to intercept and score. I only wish we'd see more goals being scored via link up play. Now to close this one out; then only a tie vs Ghana guarantees USA go through.
34' 0-2 USA resume with -- a right throw-in near flag? Elliston misses a long switch left, into near touch near the other flag. 35' 0-2 New Zealand bounce a cross to #9 Puketapu facing away at arc left, ball poked away as she receives/spins, cleared into far touch. 36' 0-2 Fox stretches and mis-hits a ball at own 25m wide right -- but up into Cleverly's extended left elbow as she turned away. 37' 0-2 New Zealand bounce a high ball to Puketapu at box top center, cleared away. Medium chip from ~24m left drops toward Puketapu at 16m center -- bounces behind her untouched at 14m. #8 Pereira, 1-v-1 at 12m 6-right, measures the bounce and lines up a one-touch roundhouse volley -- across mouth, past Murphy's dive, just wide left low. Wow, that's some skill. 41' 0-2 Jean hoofs long to box top left for Ogle 1-v-1 on Moore, Moore wins and clears. USA has dropped back a bit and reined in the breakneck pace -- it did its job. 42' 0-2 Pugh receives on the right, passes to Sánchez at arc top left -- mixing up the running duties? 43' 0-2 Pereira chest-traps at 25m wide right, takes LB Jean down wide right to 2m. Jean pokes over -- but off Pereira? USA gk, ping across the back.
45' 0-2 Sánchez ignores DeMelo drifting alone down wide left, instead dribbles centerward to 24m mid-left, tries a diagonal pass down box right -- intercepted. Pugh challenges a loose touch, collects, she tries to switch to DeMelo, and that's intercepted. Meh, still too much reliance on medium-long passes. +3'. 45+2' (of +3') 0-2 Sánchez left ck, to left 90 Olla palms it off the wood (or it bounces off untouched), Moore heads out to 10m 1/3 left. Pugh steps centerward unmarked, turns-and-volleys way over bar. HT 0-2. 35% possession, 2(0) shots(sog), 0 ck: New Zealand 65% possession, 9(3) shots(sog), 3 ck: USA FIFA credits USA with 3 shots on goal, Olla with 3 saves, yet we've scored 2. Fix that, stat!
46' 0-2 Kickoff at 63:42. So ... subtract 18', add 18"? 47' 0-2 Fox (on the left now) rounds 1 at arc top left touch, chips to 12m 1/3 left, DeMelo heads a pop-up high and rightward. 49' 0-2 Ogle passes up wide left, springs Jean(?) to 3m wide left. Cross to 6-top left bounces away, Pugh collects backward to 12m mid-left, turn-and-chips toward 14m 6-right -- too far for Sánchez. Satchell collects inside own box left, goes on a 40m run up wide left, leaves RB Elliston chasing behind her. Square pass to Puketapu at 27m arc left, but she loses it while turning. Satchell is fun to watch, and has some speed advantage. 52' 0-2 USA right ck, Pugh runs a curl through post to 9m right post -- gets horse-collared by Pereira and hauled down flat, no call Ball sails to Olla at 1m 1/6 left face-high. 53' 0-2 Cleverly shoots from ~arc top, Murphy catches at goalline center.
56' 0-2 RCB Otto tries a diagonal pass to centerline, never sees Jale standing in the lane -- simple foot-stop at 25m arc left, Jale steps forth to arc top left and shoots low hard just wide right. 58' 0-2 USA subs in (1 of 3) #15 Jessie Scarpa for #7 Savannah DeMelo. 59' 0-2 Fox chases to 4m wide right, hooks a ground cross to spot. Pugh runs into a 1-v-2, dummies over ball, it continues to 15m left post. Sánchez is unmarked, shoots right instep bending wrong way, rises over Olla -- off left post, bounces leftward. On frame, yet not "on frame". 69' 0-2 New Zealand subs in (1 of 3) #16 Tayla Christensen for #18 Grace Jale.
74' 0-2 Cousins right ck, flick-headed into Pugh's flapping arm at 5m 3-left. USA lead 11-0 in corners. 76' 1-2 New Zealand right ck (their 1st), backpass. Stewart-Hobbs chips from 22m mid-right to 5m 1/4 left, Sánchez(!) heads away. Satchell collects at 14m mid-right, drives down to 8m box right, floats a cross to 3m left post, Scarpa heads it away to box top center. #7 Coombes waits for one bounce to come to her, lifts a gentle volley over the tide, perfectly lobs Murphy into 1/3 left high. 76' 1-2 2h drinks break. 79' 1-2 Cousins chases a loose ball, Puketapu hip-charges her down, stays down with ankle/foot pain herself. Brief stoppage. 79' 1-2 USA subs in (2 of 3) #11 Ally Watt for #16 Emily Fox. 80' 1-2 New Zealand subs in (2 of 3) #11 Emma Rolston for #9 Martine Puketapu. 82' 1-3 Satchell dribbles leftward across 30m circle left -- Watt stabs foot out and pokes ball high to circle center. Scarpa settles ball through 2 to circle (our) right, taps a perfect through-ball for Watt continuing her all-out run to 33m mid-right, 2-v-5 but 4m behind them all. Watt drives to 12m mid-right, shoots right instep bending away from Olla -- just past her dive, into left side netting. Everybody jump! #U20Femenino REVIVE el tercer gol de @ussoccer_ynt , en un "mano a mano" lo anota Ally Watt. #NZL 1-3 #USA https://t.co/EY18yRIRrm— Telemundo Deportes (@TelemundoSports) November 17, 2016
87' 1-3 New Zealand subs in (3 of 3) #19 Jacqui Hand for #13 Paige Satchell. 90+1' (of +') USA subs in (3 of 3) #19 Natalie Jacobs for 9© Mallory Pugh (and © => Ogle). 90+4' (of +4') 1-3 Watt holds ball on right corner arc twice. FT 1-3. Group C: 4+2 (+3-1) USA (vs. Ghana) 3-1 (+2-3) New Zealand (vs. France) 2=0 (+2-2) France 1-1 (+2-3) Ghana
So, if I get it right, Ghana can still eliminate USA if they beat them by 2-0 or more? (There is anyway a situation where both Ghana and USA would advance even with a Gahana's win; a draw between France and New Zealand would put NZ at 4 points with a -1 goal difference: so, for USA, it would be a question of not losing by 3-0 or more).
Ghana and the USA both control their own fate. 1) Ghana, can advance with a win over the USA, but they need to win with a 2 (or more) goal differential. 2) Or Ghana can advance with a win over the USA (any score) and a tie between New Zealand and France. 1) USA can advance with a win, tie, or loss of <2 goal differential versus Ghana. 2) Or the USA can also advance with a loss to Ghana with no more than a 3 goal differential, and a tie between New Zealand and France.
And might also depend upon total goals scored, in each game, if it was a loss by a goal differential of 3 and NZL-FRA was a tie (goal differential of 3 would tie us in GD with NZL; then it'd go to total goals scored). If the US lost by 4 goals and NZL-FRA ends in a tie, NZL and Ghana advance.
I edited my original post before you quoted me. I think I got it now. As Jack Doggy said, waaaayy too early in the morning for this.
I don't get this one. Current goal difference are -1 Ghana, +2 USA: should Ghana win by 2-0, shouldn't their goal difference become +1 vs USA 0? USA shouldn't thus be eliminated, if losing 2-0?
If losing 0-2, the US could still advance if NZL-FRA end in a tie. So not outright eliminated, but dependent upon the other game. These scenarios drive me crazy. I think I need coffee. And yes, this group is still wide open. The 3rd match day is going to be stressful.
You're correct, my bad. Edited my original post again. Ghana need win with only a 2 goal differential to advance. Of course, I cannot see Ghana winning with a 2 goal differential, I think this USA's team defense is too good.
Different teams from the U-17's. This U-20 USA team is very strong defensively; their problem is scoring goals.
