My guess is around 6-7, though most will be bench guys. We had a few guys this year that were on loan from MLS (Fernando Anor, Damian Lowe, Chris Klute) and others with MLS experience (Danny Cruz and Ben Speas), plus a few other guys like Justin Davis with multi-year contracts....so it'll be interesting. Christian Ramirez is a given, and the quiet rumor persists about bringing Miguel Ibarra back from Mexico. The Zlatan to Minnesota rumor is only in my mind. Oh, we also need a coaching upgrade. Carl Craig is a great story, but somewhat lacking as a head coach. We underachieved badly this year, given the roster talent we had. No, we won't take Cassar.
You tell him 15! Sounds like someone needs to plan an Atlanta road trip to steal a bunch of straws...
Cruz, Speas and Klute. My guess is if they weren't good enough for underwhelming MLS clubs, they probably aren't good enough to help jump start a new MLS club. But we'll be happy to trade you a Olmes Garcia for Christian Ramirez.
Full list of protected/unprotected is posted. Bunch of defensive names in the mix - of course RSL protects Schuler and not Atinella. http://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2016/...referral&utm_content=News&utm_campaign=Unpaid
Looks right to me. There are plenty of goalkeepers in the draft to entice away from Atinella, and Schuler would be grabbed at least for trade bait. If he's in our plans, then he has to be protected.
I'm fine with our list. I really don't get the worry with Attinella. If he does (very unlikely) get picked, we go find another GK. This country does a pretty good job at producing them.
Given who we left unprotected, he's likely to get picked up as a backup or a trade piece. 808404045773750272 is not a valid tweet id
Pretty sure Attinella is safe with world class striker Devon Sandoval beside him on the unprotected list. Seriously though, with Guzan tied to Atlanta I really don't anticipate Minnesota seeing Attinella at the top of the list of unprotected keepers. We like him because we've seen every minute he's played but compared to the names on this list I'm sure he fades into the background: Seitz, Chris Kennedy, Dan Shuttleworth, Robert Saunders, Josh Reynish, Kyle Irwin, Clint Magee, Mike
You also have to look at dollars and salary cap. I'm sure his salary is below the rest of those names listed, and surely lower than the keepers. Except maybe Reynish - who I fell Jeff beats hands down. I do worry about RSL losing him.
Here ya go. Seitz, Chris 136,000 Kennedy, Dan 180,000 Shuttleworth, Robert 137,500 Saunders, Josh 150,000 Reynish, Kyle 62,500 Irwin, Clint 95,625 Attinella, Jeff 90,000 So I guess Jeff is a bargain, Kyle Reynish is a bigger bargain and Clint Erwin is about the same. I'd probably take Irwin over Attinella personally, if price was a factor.
If I'm picking, I take the guy with MLS first team experience in Seitz over Attinella. Also, if Jeff goes, I really don't get why people are so scared. We can find another GK. We have Nicky. If our biggest scare in an expansion draft is that our backup GK might get picked in a year that we don't have CCL or any USMNT issues that Nicky will be gone for, then we're in good shape.
I thought for sure Attinella would be picked, but after seeing that GK list, I'm not so sure. Won't be the worst thing ever if he's taken. Honestly, it'd probably be a bad thing for him personally if he was taken. I don't know if I'd want my first team experience to be with an expansion team, where you're likely to look worse than normal on a new team trying to make it in the league. He'd be better off going to a team that's been around for awhile.
a lot in the draft in general. What does that say about RSL? We are good at identifying talent that you might want on your team but don't care if they're lost in an expansion draft.
Good at identifying bench and types to round out the roster. While they're the types of guys you need to flesh out the roster, you're not making a winning team out of them all.
Atlanta 1st - Donny Toia (MTL) Minnesota 1st - Chris Duvall (NYRB) Atlanta 2nd - Zach Lloyd (DAL) Minnesota 2nd - Collin Warner (HOU) Atlanta 3rd - Clint Irwin (TOR) Minnesota 3rd - Mohammed Saied (CBUS) Atlanta 4th - Mikey Ambrose (ORL) Minnesota 4th - Jeff Attinella (RSL) Atlanta 5th - Alec Kann (SKC) Minnesota 5th - Femi Hollinger-Jenzen (NER) 3 goalkeepers were taken. Interesting choices.
So now RSL have Rimando and Lalo. Maybe I just watched the wrong games, but I haven't been impressed by Lalo at all.
I rated Attinella pretty highly... and, I've been worried about Nicky. Oh, well, keepers are not quite a dime a dozen, maybe two bits a dozen... Keepers like Nicky, though, they are worth $. Attinella, we'll see what a full season looks like for him.
I'm sad to see Attinella go, but it is what it is. How many more years do you think Nick Rimando has left in him?
