At the very least, Olum, Nagamura, Mapp, and Hallisey need to move on. We really need a true attacking threat as well as some reliable back-up, and we need to find some way to keep Feilhaber. Lots of questions this offseason. @Buzz Killington , help me out with the International and Out of Contract players.
Feilhaber is the only 1 I'm for sure on. Internationals: Coelho, Medranda, Alvarado, Mustivar, Rubio, Salloi. I'd add Anor to my list of players that need to move on. Also don't be surprised if neither EPB or Salloi are back.
Thematically, Sporting needs to accomplish several things in order to get out of this mediocre rut and make the team a legitimate cup contender again. The roster needs such an overhaul that I think it might be too ambitious to expect it to all get done this winter. I think it may require a gradual phasing out of some veterans. At the same time the core identity of high pressure, possession and width needs to be maintained which is why I think it might be prudent to keep a few guys around a little longer than some would expect. -We need to have less injuries. So in order to do that we have to part ways with as many of these injury prone bubbas as possible and replace them with younger players with low mileage. -We need to be able to threaten teams from all three positions on the front three. We need two true attackers up top in addition to Dwyer. -We need a reliable, non-injury prone RCB to line up next to Besler. And those two need to be welded on to the starting 11. I don't care if Besler has a few bad games, let him play it out of his system. -Our midfield is 2/3rds of the way complete. Mustivar had a decent two year run, but he is the weak link at the moment and he needs to be replaced. I need to think on this a bit longer, but we need a Blue Wedding in a big way. However I think we need to stick with the core: Melia SAS, Besler, Medranda Benny, Espinoza Dwyer My list will be much bigger. I would start with the injury prone guys and look for ways to offload them and get something for them. That would include guys like Myers, Opara, Coelho even Zusi. We'll probably take a bath on Zusi but he's not worth it anymore.
I have to say it. Maybe it is time to move PV to just GM. His coaching the past two seasons has been the definition of insanity -- keep doing the same things and expect different results. Until PV learns he must at times change his strategy and/or formation [along with personnel] to win particular games, he will not ascend again to truly fight for any cup in this league.
Gonna go ahead and disagree with that, if he can get players to play similarly to last night, and add a couple impact pieces in key spots (wing, RCB) this team can compete.
I'm sympathetic to this opinion. But I think we need to flush out the players that are always getting hurt and sign some talented young players. Stick with that core of Besler, Espinoza, Feilhaber and Dwyer and fill in some new blood around that. If Vermes can't get it together after a rebuilding period then I might change my opinion.
I'm totally up for dropping every single winger on the roster other than maybe Porter and Saloi just because I don't really know what they can offer and they are young (Hallisey is young, but we have seen his "skills"). Zusi is the best we have and he is nowhere near worth his salary. He looked lively until he hit the post last night in like the 15th minute, and was pretty much done at that point. I know Besler has been dumped on this year some, but I just cant see it all being his fault, particularly since he has looked good for the Nats. I would like to keep him. 3 clean sheets in a row is a nice end to the season (last night ended 0-0 in my eyes and we "lost" because reasons). Really, I'm mostly happy with the backline if we can keep some consistency in who plays. Would I like upgrades? Sure...but I don't think it should be the focus. The focus should just be avoiding the half dozen or so ridiculously stupid goals they gave up through the season. Benny, Roger, Dom...pretty much must keeps. The chances of replacing any of them effectively over an off season are about nil. I would like an upgrade to Soni, but I don't necessarily want to get rid of him.
They played great, but it was a performance based on character, effort and grit. That's not sustainable over a season. They need better players. I'm not in favor of moving him out of the coaching role but I think he needs some help with the TD role. His player acquisitions and roster management decisions have been below par for a few seasons now. Too much money tied up in players that don't impact the game.
That's what I assumed they were doing when they brought Bliss in in January, give them a full offseason to work together. http://www.sportingkc.com/post/2016/01/05/sporting-kc-names-brian-bliss-director-player-personnel
Anything now would be rumors since the season is still going on. Don't believe they can even make any waiving announcements yet.
Still a free agent, a few articles I've seen have linked him with the likes of Empoli, Pisa, and other teams in Serie B, along with KC still.
You might as well sit back and relax because nothing substantive is going to happen until the MLS cup is settled. Or, you can drive by Benny's house every day and see if there is a "for sale" sign in the yard.
I kind of thought some teams did make waivers before the playoffs were finished, but maybe I'm just remembering incorrectly. Or maybe it's something like an intent of waiver and the moves aren't official until the offseason proper. Things move fast once the final is played, though. No player roster movement, but Zavagnin is being interviewed for MN job. http://www.si.com/planet-futbol/2016/11/02/minnesota-united-mls-manager-giovani-savarese
Rossi still a KC target, but NYRB and OCSC also apparently interested. http://www.onceametro.com/2016/11/1...york-red-bulls-radar-mls-sporting-kansas-city
http://www.kansascity.com/sports/mls/sporting-kc/article113897658.html We currently have 7 players under contract for next year. Although that doesn't count guys who have an option that needs to be picked up (like SAS).
SKC has a LOT of work to do if they are to build a competitive team next season. There are so many holes in this roster that I don't see it getting much better without spending a lot of money. But, maybe its time that they did.
Spending a lot of money where? They can technically only spend "their" money on the three DP slots, and all three of those are filled at the moment. The salary cap is in place and they only have so much TAM/GAM available to them. It's not like they can throw money at four different positions.
