Probably should be noted that Panama has already qualified with two games in hand. The rest of the field isn't as clear. Some games going on today, actually.
As it remains. It's still not clear on who else will qualify. ES, Honduras, CR and Guate all still have a chance to qualify. Nothing is set in concrete except for Panama who are in 1st place no matter what.
Panama hasn't clinched first. They have 2 games left. El Salvador and Guatemala have 3 games left and can each pass Panama. If El Salvador and Guatemala have already played each other, Panama can finish as low as third. If El Salvador and Guatemala still have to play each other, Panama will finish first or second. Costa Rica went to the World cup Quarterfinals, but their senior national team could get worse if their U-20 players don't even qualify for the CONCACAF U-20 Championship.
Guatemala wraps up this tourney with Belize and Nicaragua. Honduras ends it with Nicaragua. It's hard to imagine both teams not getting maximum points in those matches. That means Costa Rica is likely to be in a must win situation in the final game against El Salvador (the host team)
It's worth noting that CONCACAF has changed the format this year. The teams will be put into 2 6 team groups with the group winners automatically qualifying for the World Cup, and advancing to the Championship game. The 4 2nd and 3rd place teams will play a one off game for a trip to the World Cup.
After yesterday's results, the table is: 1st: Panama - 15. +12 (Champions) 2nd: El Salvador- 8. +12 3rd: Honduras- 8. +5 4th: Costa Rica- 4. +0 5th: Guatemala- 4. -2 6th: Nicaragua- 3. -10 7th: Belize- 0. -17 CR's last two games are vs Belize and El Salvador respectively. Guatemala's are vs Nicaragua and Belize respectively. CR need 2 W's in those matches, as it's safe to say that Guatemala will get the 2 W's in their games. El Salvador need just one win and they qualify second place, 2 draws and they qualify, but can drop on the table possibly to 3rd the most.
FT scored from yesterday: Costa Rica vs Belize- 6-0 Guatemala vs Nicaragua- 4-0 El Salvador vs Panamá- 2-1. Table going into the last game day Team/pts/GD. Panamá**/15/+11 El Salvador*/11/+13 Honduras/8/+5 Costa Rica/7/+6 Guatemala/7/+1 Nicaragua/3/-14 Belize/0/-23 * qualified to Jamaica 2015 **champion of the tournament
Well with Honduras playing Nicaragua you have to imagine they're safe. You also assume Guatemala will beat Belize. Must win for The Ticos tonight
This does make the assumption that goal difference is the tiebreaker. If it's head to head Guatemala just needs to beat Belize
It's +1 by my count: Guatemala 1 - 0 Costa Rica Guatemala 2 - 2 El Salvador Guatemala 0 - 1 Honduras Guatemala 0 - 3 Panama Guatemala 4 - 0 Nicaragua This is a qualification for a FIFA competition, so I'm assuming it has to be goal difference. Which would mean Guatemala needs to score at least 6 goals to even things out, since they play first. Needless to say, this is going to be interesting. Someone has been streaming the matches on Justin.tv. It'll be worth watching today's final round.
I'm reading Guatemala has qualified. Which means head to head was the tiebreaker. Ticos are done unless Nicaragua snags a stunning point against Honduras
That's weird. The CONCACAF site had listed Costa Rica above Guatemala on their tables before, meaning they were using goal difference. Though trying to find info on anything in that website is impossible. I couldn't find the actual listing of the rules anywhere.
So far Panama, ES and Honduras have all qualified. If CR loses or draws to ES, then they're eliminated and Guatemala progresses.
Costa Rica won against El Salvador. So who qualified? I see some media people saying that Guatemala qualified, but all official CONCACAF sources that I've seen seem to hint at the opposite. The official CONCACAF twitter feed said that Honduras had qualified after their final match, but it didn't say the same about Guatemala after their match. FINAL: #HON (3) Bryan Rochez, Júnior Lacayo, Deybi Flores, #NIC (1) Y. Ortiz. Honduras clasifica al Pre Mundial Sub-20 CONCACAF @fenafuthorg— Concacaf (@Concacaf) July 30, 2014 FINAL: Guatemala (3) Pablo Aguilar 17´, Mauro Portillo 36´, 63 Belize (0) #UNCAF #U20:— Concacaf (@Concacaf) July 29, 2014 They still haven't put up anything after the ES - CR match.
Despite winning, Costa Rica didn't progress due to goal difference. Panama, ES, Honduras and Guatemala have progressed.
Costa Rica has a better goal difference than Guatemala. If Guatemala progressed it's due to the head to head results (Guatemala won 1-0 against Costa Rica).
So with Central American qualifying wrapped up, your qualified teams are Host: Jamaica North America: Canada Mexico USA Central America: El Salvador Guatemala Honduras Panama
Yup. Good god the Carribbean qualifying is not going to finish for another 2 months. It's seriously a mess, and just 1 Carribbean country will progress (besides Jamaica) deadddddd.
Not true to that last part. Remember, they're gonna add more Caribbean teams this time around to make equal groups (I think they said 5?)
Well Blue_nation724 posted standings with goal differentials that added to -1 instead of 0, and looking at his standings before and after one of the matchdays it looked like Guatemala was the team he was wrong about. You could be right about Guatemala, but one team certainly had the wrong goal differential in Post 10 of this topic. Edit: Wikipedia says the CONCACAF U-20 Tournament will have 12 teams in 2 groups of 6 with 4 CFU teams other than Jamaica. CFU Group 5, the last CFU First Round group, starts today.
