Sound familiar? That's because this was our 'Match for 3rd Place' last year. This is clearly a step down for both and neither must be happy to find themselves here. Nevertheless, who will leave Morroco on a high note?

End of a golden era for Monterrey:
    http://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/news/newsid=2245811/index.html

As I mentioned previously, it might be a while until we see the Rayados again in this competition - especially with the parity in Liga MX. After three consecutive CWC appearances it's time to reflect. On one hand they were the first Mexican club to finish third since Necaxa all the way back in 2000. At the same time they chocked twice against the host team with the arguably "easier" Libertadores winner waiting in the semis. The one time they did get through Chelsea put an end to their run.

How do Mexican fans feel overall about three years of Monterrey?

yeah when they finished 3rd they qualified to the mexican playoffs. The difference between still playing competitive matches and going to the CWC over a month without having real matches

The Match To Avoid Further Embarrassment. No Mex club has finished as low as 6th, and it helps that there was no 5th place match in 2007, who knows if Pachuca woulda won that.

jared, please don't predict this match, or any others in the future. Thanx. ;)

I always find it interesting how few CONCACAF-CONMEBOL meetings we have had at the CWC since 2005. Before TP Mazembe wrote history I always thought it would be a Mexican club that interrupts the “traditional” final first by beating the South American champions – mainly due to the similarities in style and Mexican participation in the Copa Libertadores. How wrong was I?

2005: CONCACAF represented by Saprissa (Costa Rica) - on European bracket side.
2006: America on European bracket side.
2007: Pachuca out against Etoile du Sahel. Boca Juniors would have waited in semis.
2008: Pachuca played Liga de Quito in semis and lost.

2009: Atlante on European bracket side.
2010: Pachuca out against TP Mazembe. SC Internacional would have waited in semis.
2011: Monterrey out against Kashiwa. Santos would have waited in the semis.

2012: Monterrey on European bracket side.
2013: Monterrey out against Raja. CAM would have waited in the semis.

So out of a possible five encounters with the Libertadores champions only one happened in 2008.

    Jared, comments? :D

Coming back to this match, it also marks the end of an era for Al Ahly - with Aboutrika, Gomaa and possibly others hanging up their boots after this match. Especially with the ongoing uncertainties in Egypt that prevented regular domestic football for almost two years now. I'm sure Ahly would like to get some revenge for last year and end the year on a high note. That said, African clubs have done rather poorly in the placement matches and Ahly themselves have failed to win the 5th place match on two occasions previously.

Can Aboutrika become (sole) all-time leading scorer in the CWC?

1-1, after 10 minutes. Cardozo and Moteab scored.

And Chelito Delgado makes it 2-1 for Monterrey, cutting in right between the CBs of Al-Ahly.

First half ended 4-1 to Monterrey (Leo Lopez scored, then Chupete scored a penalty). The Egyptian team is done.

Chelito Delgado is the Top Scorer in the history of the CWC, with five goals.

The fifth goal today was also his.

Missed this one unfortunately. Certainly not the way Al Ahly wanted to end the year. The good news for them is the Egyptian Premier League should be back soon. I see Aboutrika missed the game due to injury and instead we have a new all-time leading scorer in the CWC - Monterrey's Cesar Delgado with five goals.

Edit: just beat me to it.

Rayados took out their frustration on Al Ahly

Maybe they should have scheduled some friendly games in Morocco before they played Raja, could have made a difference
