Are you sure about that average? It looks to me like it should be 2 out of 5. 2010-11 is higher. And that would make the AAQ 3.5, right?
We have a new record low! Step up to claim your prize, Marathon! http://concacaf.globalsportsmedia.c...s&page=tournament&view=match&match_id=1300140 Just terrible.
They're already eliminated so that's why their attendance was awful. If they would've not lost to Seattle, maybe thousands of people will show up in the Caledonia match.

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the tournament fares, but so far this format seems to be a fail on the attendance front. Which also would suggest that it's been a financial failure so far as well.
I think sponsorships are the primary revenue source for the tournament followed by the TV money. Attendance is probably pretty much a non-factor. A good indicator of that was the reduction in the number of games played in the group stage. The sponsorship and TV money stay about the same because you still have games being played across six match days but each team is playing less often. They just weren't worried about losing the ticket sales which are a small percentage of the total revenue. Especially for the confederation. I don't know the split but I'll bet the home team keeps most of the ticket sales to begin with.
For Seattle's average MLS attendance they are pretty poorly marketed for the CCL, pretty sad. The whole "There are friendlies, this is not one of them" marketing campaign for the CCL I think is just plain stupid.
In Seattle's defense (and that pains me), they got sort of screwed by their schedule. They hosted the first match in early August against a Trinidadian team, which isn't a huge draw. By the time they got their next home match yesterday, they had already secured their spot in the quarterfinals, so it was effectively a friendly.
Under the new format the whole group stage feels like a drawn-out qualifying round. I imagine Seattle will put a lot more focus on marketing the quarterfinal against Tigres, especially after the great crowd they will encounter in Monterrey in the first leg.

So, what to glean from these numbers? The expanded group stage, despite the higher average, has been sort of an attendance disaster. Clubs had matches that were too far apart, and were often meaningless - if not mathematically, then in spirit. With two teams advancing from the group, there was more hope for the lesser sides. Not so much this year. The Mexican teams were not big draws when away from home, nor were the American sides. The average looks good because of Tigres, Salt Lake, Monterrey, and Houston, but beyond them, the numbers were very pedestrian, leading to the awful number for the median.
I live in Seattle and pretty much everyone follows the Sounders to some extent, and everyone I talk to told me they think the CCL is not very important and it falls last after mls cup and us open cup... that is a massive error in marketing if they think that, id say the CCL is the most important, maybe after mls cup but certainly not us open cup (altho that seems to be all they focus on )
It is probably below the open cup because Seattle does better in the open cup then the CCL. Fans have a tendency to get more into cup competitions when their team does well in them
