Guys, Leo Victor (SUR) wil no longer participate in CFU club championship this year. The reason for this is because they have a financial problem.
I'm just telling you the truth lol But here is the link, but it's in Dutch (De Ware Tijd) newspaper http://www.dwtonline.com/website/nieuws.asp?menuid=40&id=74027
I have translated it for you guys with Google translater, but note that it's not 100% grammatically correct. Leo Victor retreats from CFU-League Here by Stan Wood 09/04/2010 Paramaribo - Leo Victor does not participate in the club competition of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU). In a written statement, the Surinamese semi champion yesterday at the CFU informed to refrain from further participation in the tournament by the stubborn refusal of a modified CFU program back to the original game plan. "The original program would have to be played in Trinidad. Suddenly we are faced with one in which we are classified with Puerto Rico Islanders of Puerto Rico and Racing Desgonaives of Haiti," said Leo Victor secretary Anil Ghisaidoobe. Meanwhile, Jason Sylvester, event manager of the CFU, in the course of yesterday afternoon calling for the board to say that the writing of Leo Victor received. The CFU-man represents for the trip to Puerto Rico with a week's postponement. Ghisaidoobe Sylvester pointed out that that ignores the central issue. "It is not a delay, but to change the program, which Leo Victor in financial trouble". He was shocked when I confronted him with the costs involved with the trip to Puerto Rico. " According Ghisaidoobe Sylvester yesterday would discuss the issue in CFU level. The Secretary has informed him that if being returned to the original schedule to play in Trinidad, Victor Leo is willing to participate. At an early stage his team had protested against the unilateral schedule change. The club had focused on a budget of 9,000 U.S. dollars for participating in the competitions in Trinidad. The move to Puerto Rico cost the team U.S. $ 35,000, exclusive of contingencies. This amount consists of tickets, visas and handsets for the players. The stay in Puerto Rico would take four days. Leo Victor now has the players informed of the decision. According Ghisaidoobe they understand the resulting force majeure. The Secretary is well aware that his team a penalty by the withdrawal of 10,000 U.S. dollars over the face. He notes, however, that the dropping of Leo Victor properly substantiated and that no reason to give the CFU penalty clause to apply. SVB-Gordon Director of Shechem said to the newspaper that Leo Victor has advised the withdrawal directly to the CFU to communicate. But if the CFU Leo Victor wants to impose a penalty, the SVB will protest against, because he was from the beginning aware of the correspondence between Leo and Victor CFU. "It has been determined that Leo Victor CFU without fault and that the club in a situation of uncertainty and force majeure has been" found in Shechem .-.
Thanks for the translation! And if Alpha United can't play in PR because of visa issues, and if Leo Victor can't afford to go there, then that increases the possibility of a two-team group in which the Islanders play Racing "home-and-away" in name and tiebreaker-scenario only. Hopefully they'll find a way to resolve all of this and soon, because the games are supposed to start on Tuesday. And all this makes it more likely that the CFU will consider having the Final Round take place in Trinidad and Tobago. Not blaming Puerto Rico for this (as leeka and El Daly rightly mentioned, we don't know if the Guyana teams simply didn't get their visa situations resolved in a timely manner), but if it's simply more convenient for everyone to play in T&T...
The disparity is obvious between caribbean countries in regard to living cost. The CFU authority needs to take this into account. Things are quite expensive in countries like Puerto Rico, Bermuda, and Caiman Islands. I am not saying those countries should not host regional tournaments, specially Puerto rico which has my praise for being so successful in developing its football, however the officials should understand that clubs from poor or very small countries may not have the necessary resources at hand to travel to the most expensive countries in the region.
Quick journey into the technicalities: Bermuda and the Cayman Islands are overseas territories of the UK. And Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the US, and as such is not considered its own country in any political setting.
Futbolboricua.net is the best I've got. I'm still wondering what's going to happen with Group A, even though Leo Victor wasn't slated to play tonight anyways.
@USAFAN Politically, you are right. However, in football terms, they are 'individual countries' with their own national teams and independent colours and flags. For example, Puerto Rico and USA are two different entities in FIFA, CONCACAF, and the CFU. Thus, a match between Puerto Rico and USA is an international game! Th same goes for a match between Bermuda and England! We're talking football here, aren't we?
Yes, but I was just having a bit of fun with the semantics (hence the smiley). More fun than the teams in Puerto Rico will be having, anyway: the games for Groups A and B tonight have been postponed because of visa delays for the Haitian teams. http://www.concacafchampions.com/page/CL/NewsDetail/0,,12856~2023601,00.html At this point, if Uncle Jack wants to move the final round to his homeland, I'm sure he's got all the ammunition he needs.
I doubt Uncle Jack will move the final back to T&T. If that was the case then he wouldnt have given it to PR in the first place.
Here's the thing: there has yet to be a single confirmation from either CONCACAF or the CFU that PR already is set to host the final round. Even in the article with the schedule they say that the host of that round is "to be determined." We already got burnt once with the change in format for the tournament, so I'll wait until CONCACAF says straight up that Puerto Rico will host the games.
...Ok, ok, to be even-handed: now it's T&T's turn to suffer organizational shenanigans. Groups C and D have been delayed to tonight (instead of starting yesterday) because of problems with "stadium availability." http://www.concacaf.com/page/CL/NewsDetail/0,,12813~2024798,00.html
Called it. http://www.prislandersfc.com/index/...to-de-clubes-cfu-&catid=37:partidos&Itemid=78 So just like Bayamon did in the last round, the Islanders will get two games at home (albeit as the "away" team in the first leg) against Racing des Gonaives.
Anyone know at least on what channel in Puerto Rico they would be showing the Islanders/Racing match?
