I personally can't see TFC scoring % goals in MTL against the Impact they will come out to play me thinks.

No toin coss then; but I don't think any team is coming back from being goals behind ... unless the Impact do a repeat performance of the quarter-final.

    Re: 2009-2010 Concacaf Champions League

I just realized something. CONCACAF announced that if Real Esteli of Nicaragua's stadium fails inspection, Panama will get a third team. This leaves open the possibility that Panama will get three teams all starting in the qualifying round while other UNCAF countries will get two teams, one starting in the group stage and one in the qualifying round. That doesn't make sense. In the UEFA Champions League, if Country A had more teams invited (including the qualifying rounds) than Country B, Country A would have at least as many teams going directly to the Group Stage as Country B (maybe there would be in exception with the defending champion spot, which CONCACAF doesn't use). To be consistent, CONCACAF could replace Real Esteli with a club from Costa Rica, El Salvador, or Guatemala. Or alternately CONCACAF could put Panama 1 in the Group Stage and make Costa Rica 1, El Salvador 1, or Guatemala 1 start in the qualifying round.

It doesn't make sense because that's not the way they do it in Europe?

I'm not sure if that's  or

What they are doing IS consistent. How are they going to replace a qualification round slot with a group slot without punishing a team/federation that did nothing wrong?

    Re: 2009-2010 Concacaf Champions League

To rephrase, I'm saying that in CONCACAF's opinion which I disagree with, Panama 3 is more deserving than Costa Rica 3, El Salvador 3, and Guatemala 3 (based on who would replace Real Esteli); but Panama 1 is less deserving than Costa Rica 1, El Salvador 1, and Guatemala 1 (based on Panama 1 being the only one of those that has to play in the qualifying round). I think a country that is more deserving of having more clubs in the tournament should also be more deserving of their top club starting in the group stage.

    Edit: News from http://concacaf.com/view_article.aspx?id=4769

Real Esteli's stadium failed inspection and Panama only had one usable stadium so they didn't get a third team. CONCACAF gave Herediano of Costa Rica a berth because "Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala all had equal performance co-efficients. The Emergency Committee therefore decided to award Nicaragua’s berth to Costa Rica based on its teams’ better historical performance in international competition."

There's such a thing as the "Concacaf Emergency Committee". Also known as the "make up whatever rules we want" committee.

    Funny stuff.

I like how the article assumes that Toronto has no chance of catching Vancouver for the Canadian spot. :p

    Re: 2009-2010 Concacaf Champions League

At least their reasoning for giving a third spot to Costa Rica and Honduras is sound. On top of that, the addition of Real Espana and now Herediano certainly makes this a stronger overall tournament, so at least Concacaf can't be faulted for weakening the tournament. Their changes have made it stronger. These two teams are certainly stronger squads that the teams from Belize and Nicaragua would have been.

If the goal at the end of the day is to make the CCL better, than the lack of a Belize or Nicaragua squad this year should signal a better overall field of teams.

I like it because it increases the odds of a CRC team in the same group as my Dynamo. Better chance that I have reason to vacation in Ticoland. Good times.

Hells-to-the-yeah and also (don't skewer me, I'm no fan-boy of the organization), good on CONCACAF for at least explaining to us how they arrived at the decision.

    Re: 2009-2010 Concacaf Champions League

Whatever coefficient system the most recent article was referring to doesn't make sense. How can they rank the Guatamala teams as equal to the Costa Rica teams last year.

Jalapa lost 5-1 aggregate in the prelim round, and Municipal got 6 points in the group stage.

Alajuelense lost 3-2 in the prelim round, and Saprissa got 10 points in the group stage.

How that means they are equal is beyond me. Whatever system they used or claim to have used is way too simplistic.

Also, epic fail on whoever wrote the article for not being able to decipher the obscure tiebreaker rules of the Canadian Championship. They are about as clearly written as the rules that saw Cheletenago get in as the second entrant from El Salvador.

Not making excuses but that Jalapa team that played in the 2008 CCL finished dead last in the 2008 Apertura tournament, obviously they were going to get killed. They were the worst team and nothing like the team that won the 2007 Apertura Championship.

As for Municipal, we just had bad luck. We lost with last minute goals at Mexico vrs. Santos (3-2) and at Panama versus Tauro (2-1). We never lost at home and we are the only team that managed to win in Puerto Rico against the Islanders. Not even Cruz Azul or Santos managed to do that.

Expect Guatemala teams to do better this time around for the 09 CCL.

Does anyone know when the draw will be made? I hope to attend a CCL game in Columbus this summer.

Regarding favorites, I would have to select the four Mexican clubs and Saprissa as the early picks but I do believe that Columbus and Houston could make good runs since MLS had the wisdom not to make them play Superliga as well. Toronto FC has had a horrible run lately and there is no possible way that they will beat Montreal by five goals, so expect the Vancouver Whitecaps to make a decent run in the group stage.

Other than the aforementioned clubs, which Central American teams could make serious runs?

    The draw is June 11.

Last year we started getting specific match info for the group stage about a week later.

But how did any of those countries have a better "performance co-efficient" than Canada or the Caribbean? Presumably the spot was required to stay within Central America?

    Re: 2009-2010 Concacaf Champions League

Just going straight win and loss and they're not equal. Close, but not equal.

    Costa Rica 3-2-3
    ES 2-3-3
    Guat 2-3-3

However, what they could be going by is how far they advance. Because all these feds had one team in prelims and one team in groups and none of these teams advanced. Yeah, they must be basing it on advancing past a given round gives a certain amount of points. It's the only way those three are equal.

    EDIT:
Actually, that must be it, because it explains why they awarded Honduras and Panama ahead of the other CA teams. Marathon advanced out of the prelims and out of the group stage, while Olimpia didn't advance beyond group. And both Panamanian teams advanced from the prelims to the groups.

This is interesting to see. We're getting an idea of how CONCACAF is evaluating performance. This will be key when they update allocations. It appears that the only thing that matters to CONCACAF is advancing to the next round, not individual games. I wonder if they weight this or if it's a flat point.

If it's one point per advance this is how it shakes out after last year:
    Pts/Teams
    Mex 12/4
    Hon 2/1
    Can 2/1
    Carib 4/3
    Panama 2/2
    USA 1/4
    Guat 0/2
    CR 0/2
    ES 0/2
    Bel 0/1
    Nic 0/1

still disappointed in Panama not getting the 3rd spot..
Now thinking about the reason CONCACAF gave, careful, Panama's 2 spots might be taken away. Rommel is STILL being remodeled, Muquita I think has to fix the players quarters,
and the one stadium that is 100% certified/approved (Rod Carew), the patronage of that stadium is talking about POSSIBLY not letting ANAPROF use it, therefore possibly no stadium to use... aaaarrghh dammit!!!

Well, Panama needs to get their shit together. Where does the national team play? Can't they add lighting there and it'll be good. FIFA approved and all that jazz.

The national team plays at the Rommel Fernandez stadium but right now it's being remodeled so its unusable.

The Rod Carew stadium is the only one available and it's a baseball stadium. And like nfiniti said, The patronage of stadium might not allow the soccer clubs to use it anymore.
