Good question.... perhaps they didn't show any interest in being a part of this tournament.

The scary thing is that Hong Kong is probably the odds-on favorite to win this one.

    Its only the qualifying round.

The winner of this tournament gets to play as the fourth team in the final round, which includes China, Korea, Japan, + winner of this tournament. The matches for the final round will take place in June.

Is this the official AFC Championship (Asian Cup) or some other tournament?

This is a seperate tournament from the Asian Cup. The prelim round of the Asian Cup starts next month.

Yes, it is an extension of the Dynasty Cup. South Korea, China and Japan goes through to the Finals without qualifying.

This is not an Olympic Qualfier.

All of the games are taking place at Hong Kong Stadium. I read in the South China Morning Post a couple of days ago that a whole bunch of tickets are being given away for free to try to ensure that there will be a decent crowd for these games, or at least the ones involving Hong Kong.

It'll be tough, though. Would a non football fanatic (ie people not like us) really want to go see Mongolia v. Guam instead of going to the movies or a karaoke bar?

You are right. I think the Dynasty Cup was abolished in '94, and since then, we east asians didn't have a comprehensive tournament in east asia, unlike the rest part of Asia.(Gulf Cup, Tigers Cup etc).

I don't remember how frequently this cup is hosted though. If it's hosted every year and in March/April, then I don't think teams like Japan, Korea and China are not full-strength because most of those players in Europe would be left out from the rosters.

The last Dynasty Cup was in 1998. It was held every 3 years.

The East Asian Champion will be held every two years. It started last May when the East Asians agreed to have their own championship just liked the Gulf Cup, South Asian Champion and Tigers Cup. There supposed to be an East Asian Football Association. North Korea declined to play in it.
About 6000 fans showed up on the first day. They gave away free tickets to schools. I am surprised. Last time, they did in the WCQ.... no one showed up.

Guam was tied at half-time. I heard they had opportunities. I hope they do better against Taiwan and Macau. Good Luck Boys!

The East Asian cup is a tournament that is designed to be similar to other local tournaments in Asia like the gulf cup as mentioned earlier.
The west Asian cup, was played few months back and inclused Iran, Iraq, jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. Iraq won that by beating Jordan with a golden goal 3-2.
There was a suggestion made, that the winners and runners up of both East and west Asian cup to meet in another tournament. I'm a bit dissappointed that no top Asian teams like japan, Korea and China are participating!

Yep. This is a qualifying round. Only North Korea did not participate.

    HK qualifies to the Finals.
