If not for some individual brilliance from Ronaldo today, we would have lost.

so when is someone gonna criticize the Dutch boy for not marking anybody during the goal? Its done to Rugani and Bonucci every single time a goal is scored... even if its not their man.

The epitome of zonal marking but the players had no clue about what zone to defend. Ugly on both goals.

I give him a pass on this one because not a single teammate marked a player on that goal. The closest was Matuidi who was following a player into the goal box (behind him, which would have done no good) who had the presence to react to where the ball was heading. But it was too late for him to make any play.

Zonal marking was never about taking space. It was responsibility for a zone and picking up an opponent in the zone. In this case, all ten field players were just occupying space. It was too easy of a goal for Atletico. Herrera hit the header coming back for the ball but he had another teammate who was making a direct path towards it. There was no defending on the goal.

Bleacher Report guys are saying that they are doing a zonal marking system in the box, whoever is not marking a guy, the rest are supposed to crash into 50/50 challenges. they all just watched tho, even Leo.

they better figure it out soon, its very unlikely Ronaldo is going to let the end of his career be known as the years he didnt score big goals and couldnt win the CL. I expect him to leave next summer.

The one trait ( disciplined and consistent defending) under Allegri is gone( it kinda left in his last year), Juve is never going to be that team again... they need to figure out how to be able score at least 3 goals every game, 4 in the CL.

Because he wasn't supposed to be marking the guys who were not even in the 6 yard box, they were towards the top of the box when the play started. Where were the midfielders on that? Did you see De Ligt see them run in and run up to meet them because they were all alone?

Zonal marking is not a bunch of guys just taking space. It has to be organized in a sense that the players can make a play. There is no point standing next to a teammate on a set play. Don't rely on what some idiot writes on a rag report.

I normally avoid observations like this but Herrera 's head and ears resemble the CL trophy to much to make his goal a coincidence

the midfielder never win those challenges, half the time or more they just trail behind them. I was talking about him just ball watching as it came in.

On the first goal, he was just occupying space in the middle, maybe he is supposed to do that, but Costa cut right in front of him, if that header off the set piece was lesser, then Costa woulda had that unchallenged... this is a stretch tho as a complaint.

your right about midfielders, Blaise was just sitting at the top of the 18, didnt even come in and let 2 guys blow past him. Pjanic as well just parked it slightly inside of juves 18. Betancur was late on the guy who scored, he was able to redirect it unchallenged.

On the game winner, Paulo let the scorer blow past him unchallenged, and Blaise was too slow to pick him up which allowed 2 madrid players to contest for the air ball header. Only then did De Ligt do his medium jog into the 50/50 air ball and the goal went into the net.

another kinda under the radar thing is that this team does seem like players are freelancing, On Juans Goal, he scored, prior to it you could see Gonzalo throwing his hands up screaming for the ball, Higgy threw his arms up to celebrate, but he did not follow Juan to celebrate. Sami could be seen just jogging slow to a walk with his head down, didnt come over for the celebrate. Only Sandro, Ronaldo, and Danilo came over to hug him.

Blaise saw De Light and Leo come over after he celebrated alone for a brief amount of time, the rest of the guys gathered to them selves and then came over to tell Blaise good job.

Gonzalo was pouting when he was pulled for Paulo, was passive aggressive when he Paulo got his pity 10 minutes of play.

Before, everyone was running to hug the goal scorer and stayed together for a while... seems kinda forced now.

Now we are seeing more and more moments where after goals scored against, the guys are just looking around at each other trying to point the finger.

We are not winning shit this year with this guy in charge ...

“The cliché would be to switch to man-marking, but I don’t think that makes sense. We need to be more aggressive on set plays. Atleti are very good in the air, but the ball was so weak and we were too passive, as it could’ve been cut out.

“If we’re being passive, then we’d be passive with man-marking too. I also see a lot of VAR incidents with man-marking lead to penalties, so that’s another area to be wary of. We will work on defending from set plays.”

Under Allegri or Conte this match would have been a loss or tie. And boring as shit.

But seriously, we have been struggling on defending set pieces for ages. Its not just this game, in many previous games. We really need to do better with that.

It was a tie and not only were we boring as shit today, we sucked. If not for a few runs from Ronaldo, we do not score. That was not in the Sarri game plan.

When DON'T we waste corner kicks?

Our play on set pieces has been abominable for at least 2 seasons both defensively and offensively.

We have Dybala, Pjanic, CR7 and Berna, all excellent free kick takers and we have hardly scored on one in 2 years now.

Berna has been awful all season so far. Dybala is who he should put in there.
