Apparently CONMEBOL changed their ranking system:

    http://www.conmebol.com/pages/Ranking.html

It only includes the teams but not the leagues, though adding the results of each club would give the ranking of the leagues, right?

Kinda silly to include the mexican clubs considering that nowadays they can only play the Libertadores, and they included all the competitions even the Suruga Cup.

EDIT: Well doing some math the results come out like this:

    1- Brazil 2555.98
    2- Argentina 1989.67
    3- Ecuador 935.80
    4- Mexico 722.16
    5- Chile 698.66
    6- Uruguay 683.40
    7- Colombia 618.82
    8- Paraguay 581.59
    9- Peru 443.34
    10- Bolivia 307.93
    11- Venezuela 300.91

Not bad. It's based on more recent performances (last 5 years). Liga and Inter kicking ass...IMO, they should have 3 categories. A 5 yr one, 1 yr, and a historic. Would be cool...

The one they had before was more historic. IIRC, Universitario (PER) was very high on the other one :)

Ecuador has a total of 935.80 between 7 teams, Liga alone has 537.83(That's 57.47% of the points), then again they're 1st on the ranking.

Coefficient in libertadores (updated to Semifinals).

    Brazil.........94.517
    Argentina...68.416
    Chile..........58
    Mexico.......57.6
    Colombia....52.5
    Uruguay.....52
    Paraguay...49.167
    Ecuador.....40.667
    Peru..........38.833
    Venezuela..30.166
    Bolivia.......23.333

I only used the results for Libertadores in the past 5 years (2007-2011), I used wikipedia, so some numbers could not be correct. Also I do not know what to do for the year were Mexico did not finish the libertadores. So their score can be under reported because they had 5 teams in 2010 but 2 did not get any bonus points for the group play.

    Win in pre-group 1 point
    Draw in pre-group .5

Making it to the group 4 points
One extra point for each round a team advances

Wins on and after the group are 2 points
    Draw is 1 point

    1 Paraguay
    1 Brazil
    1 Argentina
    1 Uruguay

Are still alive and can get points for their federations.

Coefficient in libertadores (updated to end of the first stage).

    Brazil.........81.6
    Argentina...58.216
    Chile..........53.5

The reason total points are lower is because 2007 results go away and only 2008 to 2012 points count. So as 2012 goes forward all countries will earn more points.

What would the results be if the Sudamericana were to be factored in or if there was a different ranking system entirely that separates the two?

How would the points above translate into the distribution of 37 berths?

Here is how the berths would be assigned if we took every country's points divided by the total amount of points:

    Brazil 95.684 6.285802 6
    Argentina 69.316 4.5536 5
    Chile 63 4.13868 4
    Paraguay 52.333 3.43793 3
    Uruguay 50.166 3.295572 3
    Mexico 49.767 3.26936 3
    Colombia 47.666 3.131339 3
    Ecuador 42.292 2.778303 3
    Peru 38.666 2.540099 3
    Venezuela 28.333 1.861289 2
    Bolivia 26 1.708027 2

    Totals: 563.223 37

Overall, the only changes would be that Brasil and Chile will have one more berth at expense of Venezuela and Bolivia. Note that the total amount of berths is rounded up or down to the closest integer.

If they did use a Conmebol Coefficient, yes Chile (Maybe Paraguay and Uruguay) may get 1 more spot, but they would not come from Brasil, they would come from Bolivia and Venezuela.
