Champions League Draw Preview: Serve Yourself (Update: Draw Delayed)

Posted on May 28, 2012 11:51 am

Did you know that there will be a draw this week?

Those of you who follow the news in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras or Panama, or happened to pick up the side note in Real Salt Lake’s recent US Open Cup article, are already aware that the groups for the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League will be determined on Wednesday, May 30, in the confederation’s New York headquarters. The tournament’s website, however, has not made even one single mention of this upcoming event; in previous years, the official confirmation of the draw date would have been provided weeks in advance.

EDIT: this afternoon, CONCACAF announced that the draw will actually be held on Tuesday, June 5.

Nevertheless, in a matter of days we will find out the first steps toward the 2013 Club World Cup in Morocco for the 21 known CCL qualifiers, as well as the fate of the eventual Caribbean entrants (if CFU1 ends up in a group with a Mexican team and CFU2 does not, then I fully expect something curious to happen in the CFU Club Champions Cup final round). In the past, I would have been able to publish the pots and call it a day; but given the stipulation separating US and Mexican clubs in the group stage, it would be disingenuous of me to do so this time around. To make the draw format more palatable, I will present the pots in the form of a dinner menu, so please help yourself to one of the two available entrées, along with a side (note: your selection of clubs must be from different countries, with FAS counting as Belizean for the purposes of this draw).

Valued Customer: We regret to inform you that our selection of appetizers has been discontinued. We are aware of the fondness that you have expressed for a number of these options, especially the Boricua Bombs (warning: this item has been known to cause serious digestive problems with our US and Canadian clientele). Rest assured, we are working diligently to make sure that they return in a later section of this menu.

* These items will be determined shortly. Please stay tuned: there may be exotic barracuda on the way!

Finally, on the question of whether there will be a live broadcast of the draw: it will happen when the participating clubs demand it. Until then, anticipate more of the same (although, if CONCACAF decides to take a page from CONMEBOL’s playbook, we will not have to deal with the same thing in November).

On a different subject: last Thursday, Simon Borg passed on the tweet from ESPN’s Jorge Ramos y su Banda assuring that the 2016 CONCACAF/CONMEBOL tournament is good to go. Unfortunately, the name has been used before, or I would look into exacting royalties from Nicolas Leoz and co.
