CCL 2011-12 Qualifiers: A Meaningful Third-Place Match

Posted on May 26, 2011 5:12 pm

I mentioned back in my New Year’s Reflections why I thought that the Third-Place Match should be kept in the World Cup finals – and I’ll add that winning third place among the 200+ nations that participate in the World Cup is unquestionably an accomplishment. Outside of that particular competition, such matches are typically not even held, with few exceptions (e.g. Copa America, Copa Centroamericana and the Caribbean Cup).

In the CFU Club Champions Cup, however, the third place match will be contested at anything but a “friendly” pace, what with a much bigger prize on the line than a bronze-medal giveaway. The penultimate spot in the Champions League (it would have been the last, but the final game of the Canadian Championship has been pushed back) will be decided tomorrow at 6 p.m. (all times EST) as the hosts, Alpha United, will take on Defence Force of Trinidad and Tobago at Guyana’s National Stadium in Providence. Given the scramble to find any sort of information from the tournament last night, I am fairly certain that once again, the Puerto Rico Islanders’ Twitter account will be the only means of following the game.

Then, at 8 p.m., or 8:30 if the third-placer goes into overtime, the CFU final will be contested between fellow CCL qualifiers Puerto Rico Islanders and Tempete of Haiti. Yes, you read that right: CONCACAF has already confirmed that Tempete will get to play continental ball – although that article does not make any mention of whether their home stadium, Parc Levelt in St. Marc, or any other one in Haiti has met CONCACAF standards for hosting a nighttime CCL match.

Once the trophy has been awarded, we will know which Caribbean teams will attempt to qualify into which groups of the 2011-12 Champions League. I’ll have to wait until July 2 to publish the complete bracket, however – and that’s assuming Zeus and/or Thor don’t decide to use Toronto as a dartboard again.
