CCL 2011-12 Qualifiers: Title After the [R]
Posted on May 8, 2011 3:57 pm
Just in case anyone had not yet seen the Pumas-Monterrey game and planned on watching later, I wanted to give a general heads-up: in The Regional Review, oftentimes I will be updating you on events as they happen. So for the record, from here on in, this entire blog is rated [R] for results-spoiling.
We’re good? Ok. Title and entry to follow…
No “Bi” for Monterrey, No “Bye” for Santos
This afternoon, Monterrey’s attempt to win back-to-back tournaments in Mexico (Hugo Sanchez’s Pumas were the last team to pull it off, six years ago) came to an end at the Ciudad Universitaria, as Pumas got the 2-0 they needed to tie the series 3-3 on aggregate and move on to the semis based on regular season finish (2nd to Monterrey’s 7th). As the highest seed remaining, Pumas are guaranteed to play Chivas in the semifinal, while Cruz Azul awaits the winner of the Morelia-America series later tonight.
The reason this particular result gets a separate entry here is because of the implications it has for Mexico’s representation in the next Champions League. With Monterrey now out of the picture, we won’t get to know how a hand-me-down situation would work in the FMF, since the two finalists this season will be distinct from those that played for the Apertura title. For Santos Laguna, then, this means that once again, their continental campaign will begin in late July, rather than mid-August.
