uh no, Germany bored me to tears.
It’s true. The Germans ( as good as they are), just didn’t want to attack! When they did, they were always very close to scoring, but they just kept sitting back and look what happened.
If the match was boring, it’s entirely the Germans fault. They were content to pack the box with 10 men the entire night. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Oezil, Podolski and Trockowski spent more time in their own half than in Spain’s. If I didn’t know better while watching the match, I would have assumed they were some minnow like N. Korea or Honduras, not the mighty Germany. It was frustrating to watch a team with quality players like Lahm, Schweinsteiger, and Oezil play like that.
How can you guys say that this was a bad match. For the first time this tournament Spain played wonderfully. The passing, the movement and the combinations on the edge of the box was world class. True, Spain lacked the cutting edge in terms of scoring but they really played well so I don’t get you guys saying otherwise.
THANK YOU. Spain played their best Football vs. Germany, they looked fearless and invincible. All the idiots saying the match was “boring” and that it’s somehow Spain’s fault just don’t understand Football the way it’s meant to be played (or are probably just jealous that their national team will never play with such skill and control).
You’re my boy for posting this, I’m sick and tired of amateur critics thinking otherwise. It just wreaks of jealousy or pure ignorance.
i am having real trouble understanding the abject negativity of some of the podcast commentators. the attitude seems to be that no one is ever good/exciting enough and the tournament is just a big conspiracy to bore us to death.
germany arrived in a cautious mood and they let spain dictate the match. for what they were given, spain tried very hard to make a match out of a stalemate.
I think Kartik was pissed that his pick went out. Lest everyone forgets, World Cup semifinals are usually a cagey affair. At least it wasn’t decided by PKs of any kind. I thought Spain played impressively and intuitively, not allowing Germany to impose their will with the exception of a few flashes on goal. The Spaniards were unlucky as well to not have scored from the run of play. What was Pedro thinking not passing to Torres? Anyway, I’m pleased to see new blood at the top.
What a silly and frankly, stupid, comment.
Germany was the team that played negatively, not Spain.
Frankly, no team (other than Chile in group) has done anything but put 9-10 players behind the ball and hope to nick and goal on the counter against them the whole tournament. Swiss = bunkered. Honduras = bunkered. Portugal = bunkered. Paraguay = bunkered. Germany = bunkered.
Like I said, the only teams who’ve come out to play ever game are Spain, Argentina, and Chile. To a lesser extent Brazil and Holland (though they’ve both thought solid first).
And then to have someone accuse Spain of boring us to tears = soccer moron.
Germany was chasing the ball and not getting it, not bunkering. And whenever they had the ball they lost it in the midfield far to often, certainly more often than in the previous games they played. Spain on the other hand played brilliatn football, but decided to take no risk at all, which imo made the match rather boring to watch, unless you appreciate the skill they had. They were the much better team and dominated, but they didn’t really push to show that on the scoreboard (which would have opened up the game).
All brilliant comments, guys, well said. Glad some people here have a concept of Football. Not sure how anyone can say Spain were “boring”.
And to be fair, 96Squig, Germany were bunkering a bit. I think it certainly didn’t help that Spain were playing so well in possession, but Germany could’ve been more adventurous. They said it themselves, they respected (read: “feared”) Spain too much, and I don’t completely blame them.
