State-by-state soccer debuts

When and where was the first soccer game played in your state? Here are the answers to those questions — partial answers in many cases — for more than 40 different states. Of course, a few of these weren’t states yet when the first soccer game was played there, and the name soccer wasn’t used in this country until around 1905. Some of the exact dates are not known, and if no score is listed, that means that it is not known. As was the case with a previous blog entry that I posted on 19th-century American soccer, the data here is based on research by Melvin I. Smith of Asheville, N.C.

Alaska? Maybe they’re still waiting for their first game.
And you’ve got to love Hell-in-Town Boys. Someone please revive that club.
That Waukesha, Wisconsin game fascinates me. The Oneida Football Club defeated all comers in a variant version for three years, but the first actual association football game was in the Midwest? None of the snooty Ivy Leaguers at the time considered playing by FA rules?
Perhaps not entirely unbelievably, the USSF gives credit to the Princeton-Rutgers game in 1869, which is another mystery, because apparently the rules for that game were “modified London Football Association rules.” Has Rutgers-Princeton been taking credit not only for the wrong first game, but the wrong game entirely?
EDIT – the USSF dates the Rutgers-Princeton game in 1876, too. Why does the NFL site have more accurate soccer history than the USSF site?
EDIT EDIT – Technically, the USSF doesn’t say it was the first soccer game ever, but the first intercollegiate game ever, which (a) doesn’t excuse getting the date wrong, (b) takes focus away from the people who actually pioneered the game in the US, and (c) probably doesn’t hold up to scrutiny, unless the people in Waukesha, Hartford, Providence, New York and New Orleans thought the game sucked so much they gave it up then and there.
Great stuff, Roger.
What I find interesting about Florida’s is the first game was played in Palatka, which is also 1/2 of the source of the oldest high school american football rivalry in the state. St. Augustine High is the other 1/2. Yet it took over 100 years for Palatka High School to actually have a soccer program. They debuted in 1995 or ’96 and the title on their roster proudly read Palatka High School Scoccer. Way to put your best foot forward boys.
A few sophomore slumps slotted in there…
44 states?
Have to admire Princeton Theological Seminary for not bunkering and actually getting two goals out of that game.
Just like with MLS, Seattle was about 15 years behind the times – yet I’m sure they acted like they invented the game then, too.
The research on which this is based only goes up through 1891, which is why there are a few states missing.
Delaware?
Are you telling me the first game played in this country was played in Wisconsin?
Yes, I am. It was an odd event. Those two teams played again a few weeks later, but I don’t think there was another game in Wisconsin for decades. Maybe one of those Carroll College students had been to England that summer and brought back a copy of the new rules. I don’t know, but I’ll bet it was some unpredictable factor like that that caused the first game to be that far west.
I was surprised too that Mel Smith didn’t find any games in Delaware prior to 1891, but I trust his research. However, I will take another look through his books.
Missouri, May 28, 1875 in St. Louis — Blond Lawyers 3, Brunette Lawyers 3
When two sets of lawyers battle it out, no one wins.
Being a native Kentuckian. I now what I’m naming my MFLS team next year!
Hard to believe they were playing soccer in Utah before PA.
Considering that there were possibly many Mormon immigrants in Utah. It’s not that unlikely.
