Seattle Invents Getting Jobbed v. FCD; Chursky Was Outa Seitz in ’77

There once were some fans most merry
Until they got hosed by ref Terry
And now ’cause of Vaughn
They just can’t move on
And are flaming with posts incendiary
What Vaughn did by awarding a PK in the last minute of stoppage time last night, taking two points from Seattle and handing them to division-rival Dallas, was indefensible. It’s obvious that he couldn’t even see the play.
But, it happens. All the weeping and wailing on neutral message boards and planned demonstrations seem like wasted energy.
Only refs can ref, but supporters can support, and players can play, and that’s where the energy needs to go. Sigi’s comments to the effect that this feels worse that the Salt Lake game twelve days earlier because “(t)his one sort of got taken away from us” are strange.
In the Salt Lake game, Sigi went negative, ceded the intiative to the other side which kept bringing the attack until they got the equalizer, also in the last minute. If Brad Evans stays with his mark, Alvaro Saborio doesn’t get the header. If Sigi stays on the attack, the Sounders don’t get pinned back to their own endline. Why does a self-inflicted (with help from the Lakers) wound feel better than a ref-inflicted one?
The contrast in the two endings reinforces the need to take care of what one can take care of oneself. Things like last night will never be eliminated, even when the stakes are much higher, like the non-handball call in USA v. Germany in the ’02 World Cup quarterfinal, or the more infamous one with Thierry Henry that kept Ireland out of this year’s Cup.
Time to focus on the Reds.

Three straight matches with stoppage time goals. Are the Sounders leading in the Cardiac Kids sweepstakes?

Chris Seitz should take heart. The howler on the Moreno goal was nothing compared to this one by the otherwise-excellent Tony Chursky for the NASL Sounders in Soccer Bowl ’77:

Speaking of the Seitz/Moreno goal, although I am not foaming at the mouth about the Vaughn call, it will be interesting to see what Paul Tamberino says about it, since he’s been throwing his refs under the bus all season.
Seattle is the first team ever to get screwed by an MLS ref? Interesting.
This, as Moog from the 40 Year Old Virgin put it, is crybaby bullshit.
You guys seem to have not noticed the anti-crybaby thrust of what I wrote, and that the title was tongue-in-cheek.
Excuse the grammar. Your post was perfectly fine, in fact, a thumbs up.
This is what I fail to comprehend.
Hey, anything for a “40-year-old Virgin” quote. Just stay away from “Office Space” – it’s been overdone.
