Is your league’s championship more prestigious than the CCL championship?

This is a question for all you CONCACAFers out there. Doesn’t matter which league you follow within this great region. You could be from Vancouver or Port-of-Spain, and all points in between.
So, is your league title more prestigious than the CCL crown? I’d think it’s a no-brainer. The CCL gets you to the CWC. It crowns you king of an entire continent. Therefore it’s bigger. But maybe some will (erroneously) disagree.
Let’s see, RSL fans this year have it right. They are feeling a giddiness and anticipation higher than the lead up to Seattle 2009. And rightfully so. Their opponent is hands-down, on paper, the top dog in North America.
The Galaxy, in 2009, were not.
Let’s look at last year. Pachuca fans really wanted to return to the CWC. Were they more excited than for their previous league titles? I think so, especially since it was imperative for them to erase the embarrassment of the previous CWCs (and they only added to their CWC FAIL legacy instead).
How about 2009? We had a club that was still relatively new to Cancun, and even though their fans went wild for their Fall 2007 league title, the CCL gave them a more transcendent happiness. This was a year where Europe produced the most impressive champion, arguably, in its history, and a chance to face them head-on was deliciously imminent. And they eventually did, plus held an early lead as well. It produced memories that will last a lifetime. So Atlante fans also had it right that CCL was a bigger prize.
So, CONCAheads, what say you on the matter? Let’s hear your reasoning.
Actually, we are talking about the world title. No need to put quotes around it.No, that’s not the mindset they have. They’re there to win the championship of the world. It’s much more than that. You obviously have never played competitive football. It takes more blood, sweat and tears than you can possibly imagine to win the CWC. Should a minnow win it, it will be career-defining, and rightfully so.
The E. League doesn’t cast a wider net. It’s an awkward consolation tournament for 17th place in Europe. It’s like the NIT, which is weird to see at the professional level. Teams are right for tanking it in order to qualify for the CL instead.
Worldwide Champions Leagues are a step above the domestic titles they engulf. Toluca has a bucketload of domestic hardware. But Pachuca is the team that is now known worldwide due to their CWC appearances. Continent>country.
It’s more prestigious than some Central American league titles. Ok, we will check back. Just keep in mind that this is about prestige, not popularity. The America-Guadalajara Superclassic drew the year’s highest ratings. But America’s Liberators Cup match days later was more important in a more prestigious competition, yet drew much lower ratings. Popularity, marketing and fan awareness are irrelevant to a title’s prestige. The quality of the opponents you have to beat is the determinant.
It’s pretty debatable, actually. And we’re not talking about the “world title”, since the Concacaf team doesn’t have a realistic chance at winning. We’re talking about the event. Subtle, but important distinction.
The European clubs consider it an inconvenience only mitigated by the prize money. South Americans just try to avoid getting upset before hoping to catch the European team on a bad day. For the rest of the field, it’s really a nice little prize for winning their continental trophy. They know that, realistically, they’re there to make up numbers so FIFA can add “World” to the title of the tournament.
Just because a competition casts a wider net, doesn’t mean it’s more prestigious. Notice how many Serie A and Premier League clubs tank the UEFA Cup/Europa League to solidify mid-table position?
By this logic, the Mexican domestic championship is more prestigious than the CCL, which was sort of the point I was groping for.
If one is not an MLS fan to begin with – and call it a hunch, but I sorta get the vibe that you’re not – then anything’s going to be more prestigious than winning MLS Cup. And this week, the CCL is the biggest thing going on in MLS. But do check back again in October, especially if Salt Lake and Colorado meet in the playoffs.
That isn’t debatable. The world title is more prestigious.
You also get a star for the CCL title, and you have more sneering ammunition with international accomplishments. RSL fans have already pwnt Rapids fans thoroughly because they made it this far.You usually do. USOC, SS or Conference Championships. Champs and subchamps in Mexico (subchamps get a trophy too). Last place prize $$ in the CWC, which is part of the prize for winning CCL, is quite substantial and I believe bigger than prize $$ for the anschultz trophy.
I’m not comparing the CCL to those titles, I’m comparing it to C’CAF domestic titles, namely the usa league’s.Ok, we’ll check back in October and you’ll see which title was more important. RSL fans already said the season would be a success if they win this. And rightfully so.
You can’t compare a title you win by beating a Mexican team than one you win by beating the likes of FC Dallas or the Galaxy. Big difference in prestige there. RSL knows this is the big one, bigger than vs the galaxy. And if the rapids get this far next year, it’ll make their tilt vs FCD look like peanuts.
The Pachuca question is more about whether the Club WORLD Cup is more prestigious than the CONCACAF championship – and even that is debatable.
The CCL has no history since the day before yesterday. Its predecessor, the CONCACAF Champions Cup, was as half-assed as they come. The proceeds from the tournament line the pockets of Mr. Warner. Teams in this tournament are at the mercy of idiot foreign refs (as opposed to idiot domestic refs). Winning your domestic league gets you a star on your jersey, and the right to sneer at your rivals. You don’t have to win anything before winning the CCL, either – runners-up are allowed in the tournament. I can’t be bothered to look it up, but I’ll bet the prize money is better for domestic success, too.
If this were Libertadores or the Champions League, then I can see the argument. CONCACAF? It is to meh. We’ll all be happy for RSL if they beat the Monterrey Jacks, but check back in October if they lose in MLS Cup, or earlier. Probably Monterrey fans would just as soon not botch the liguilla, either.
