The State of MLS After Beckham; the Cosmos the Next NY MLS Team or Not?
Posted on December 5, 2012 5:26 am
The guys discuss the state of the league after Beckham’s time with LA, and whether the NY Cosmos, or another team, will get the NY spot that Garber keeps rapping about. On The Straight Red Card. www.thestraightredcard.com

good luck becks. thanks for all you did.
Where have you guys been? I’ve missed the commentary.
Heft: First, thanks for the kind words.
Brett and I have been intimately involved in the whole process of bringing a pro team to Indianapolis. Our supporters group (along with with Peter Wilt) have been hitting the pavement, setting up gatherings, writing releases, meeting every soccer person in and around Indianapolis. It looks like we may just have the swell of support needed for the investors to take the plunge. But, to put it bluntly, between this project and others, Brett and I have been a bit up to the gills. The show had to take a few weeks break. Thanks for asking.
The U-21 rule’s been abolished, fyi.
In favour of the young players EARNING their spots. Seriously, the youths are ending up better than the foreigners!
Have you SEEN Monterrey’s Jesus Corona?
and Vaquero from Chivas
“The Cosmos”????
“The Cosmos” haven’t played a game since 1984 (that embarrassing joke against ManU last year notwithstanding) and won’t until apparently, the Fall of next year.
So the discussion here is whether MLS should award the team to a name because, gosh, we do SO love that name.
If we’re awarding teams based on nothing but having a dusty old name, how about Falls River Marksmen?
At least they’re not owned by someone involved in bribing FIFA confederation presidents.
The Cosmos name MIGHT join MLS assuming the guys who own the NASL franchise will sell the name to the eventual owners. But the NASL Cosmos themselves will never move up. And frankly I’d be shocked if they ever play a game.
Bill:
Did Pele play for the Fall River Marksmen? I kid of course, but yes, I would surprised if the Cosmos became the next team, but it would also shock me that anyone who had an ownership stake in the Cosmos would think it would be worth while to go forward as an NASL team if the Don picks another group to start NY2. I’m not sure that is sustainable in the short or long run. And of course, while I was a huge Cosmos fan as a kid, my loyalties are more currently being turned towards a project we’ve been working on for some time: Racing Indy FC and NASL in Indianapolis. As that comes together, I seem to care less and less about the fate of the Cosmos.
As a matter of fact Pele DID play for the Fall River Marksman…oh wait…scratch that… his name was PETE…sorry Pete, not Pele.
I reluctantly agree…although he arguably made a joke of the league his first 3.5 years (even considering the ridiculous schedule the league put together for him upon his arrival), Beckham raised the profile of MLS exponentially. Having said that, the ratings for the MLS Cup as his final match were absolutely no better than any other MLS Cup.
As far as MLS NY2 goes (Cosmos or not), am I really out of line to suggest that one successful MLS club in a metro area should be a prerequisite for adding a second?
No, no you are not. In fact I would hope everyone thinks like you on this but sadly that’s not the case.
No, the whole point of another NY team is to get the RB more popular.
Yes, the rivalry with the Galaxy does WONDERS for Chivas USA.
Last week the Cosmos had a meeting with its fans–and they were asked point blank about their plans for the first divisions and the team rep openly said “an MLS team may not be in our future.” They’re going to concentrate solely on being an NASL superclub.
“…an NASL superclub.” Isn’t that an oxymoron?
How about working on an MLS superclub first (not that we need one). Oh, that’s right, there’s parity a plenty in the league…wouldn’t want to spill the (Big) Apple cart.
I am unaware of any recent news about any Cosmos incarnation. Whether, when or if. BUT, I believe a second NY team in Queens would be the right thing for MLS and American soccer. Let it happen.
