Fulham Fans Taunt Clint Dempsey; New Respect from Mexican Team for US Team?
Posted on August 22, 2012 6:03 am
The guys discuss Clint Dempsey’s attempted move from Fulham; the new found respect the Mexican National Team players have for the US Nats; and is there really a “gap” growing between US and Mexican talent? On The Straight Red Card.
On the Dempsey situation, I see his strategy of not playing as an attempt to get Fulham to lower their asking price. I think many clubs have been interested but Fulham’s non-negotiable asking price has limited the number of clubs willing to talk.
If the price is lowered or Fulham starts actively shopping him inviting teams to come to the table, you will see clubs coming out of the woodwork to make offers in the next week.
If Fulham calls his bluff, their saddled with a disgruntled player and without significant money that they could use elsewhere in the transfer market.
Third possibility is that Fulham tries to sell him to a middle eastern or Chinese club who would likely cough up a large fee, putting him in football purgatory as punishment.
If a Middle Eastern or Chinese club comes calling, Dempsey would reject the bid. He would prefer ride pine at Fulham for the rest of the season and then sign to any club he wishes then to hang up his cleats and retire in China or the Middle East.
And then he’ll end up in a team equal or worse than Fulham. I don’t see any of the 5-6 teams with CL chances making a bid.
Also see: Carlos Tevez.
I don’t see him pulling a Tevez. He’ll come back to Fulham if he doesn’t get sold
He’s pulling a Tevez now. This crap about leaving, I can totally see Fulham calling Dempsey’s bluff, leaving him on the sidelines and forcing him to watch until the petulant child admits he was wrong and works his way back in to the coach’s good graces. Hence the “see: Carlos Tevez” line.
That is exactly what happened to Tevez and he cost a whole lot more than Clint. Fulham can afford to play that game too.
Not digging the new theme…makes it sound like it’s “a very special episode” of TSRC, if you know what I mean.
Yeah, well every episode is “special”.
On the other hand, we had a computer go down, and had to resort to awesome back-up music that personally thought was pretty cool.
I don’t get it either.
Oh well, not every show can have Alan Thicke (The Facts of Life) or Henry Mancini (What’s Happpening) write their theme song.
I am not digging it musically. However, when “Family Ties” went from Jackson Browne to the “Let’s Hear it for the Boy” chick and Johnny Mathis, they wen’t from in-the-running to worthy-drafter-to-Cosby. That being said, I agree. They should endeavor to be the Charlie Rose of soccer podcasts – the cheesy dated music is actually cool because it is cheesy and dated and representative of a consistent presence.
??? Family Ties never used Jackson Browne. They always used Without Us.
That was the song, yes. It was Dennis Tufano, actually, who sang the cool version before the schlockier version was introduced. I misremembered it as JB.
Actually, it is looking more and more like he’s not holding out. There was the rubbish about him bei g fined that was reported in several of the rags which has never been substantiated and then Jol backing way off of his statements of last week… Also, if you read the full statement from last week and not just what Reuters put out, it doesn’t say that he refused to play but that Dempsey doesn’t want to be there and that Jol thinks that he’d be too worried about getting hurt and affecting a transfer and that he doesn’t WANT to be there, so he’s not needed. Nowhere does it say that he REFUSED to play or practice. Jol has a history of handling these cases badly and has been on Dempsey to sign a re-up since mid-term of last season. This seems more like a spurned Fulham, who’s feelings are hurt because the player that they’ve offered the richest contract in club history to, is saying thanks but no thanks… As a fan I can see being insulted by this and as a club, embarrassed but the way this is playing out could turn out much more embarrassing for them…
Just my take but we’ll see (at least some of the truth) once the dust settles and Dempsey talks…
It seems a lot like the Ljundberg situation at Seattle, except with a player trying to hang on, not a player on the rise trying to maximize his potential. In both cases, the club decided he should train on his own. In the Seattle case, the management did not disparage the player, hoping to get something for him. Not sure what Fulham gains by trashing Dempsey. Jol may pay the price for that stupidity.
Just curious…are there any reports to counter what is being reported?
It’s all well and good to call it rubbish, and it very well may be, but without a source or two to back it up as being rubbish it is just more conjecture.
Yes, there are a few: http://www.noshortcorners.com/2012/08/look-yall-no-shame.html

Secondly, there is no and never was a source for the ‘fining’ story. If he was being fined there’d be public record (players assoc.) and if he was refusing to play he would be fined…
I think he’s doing the best thing he can – keeping his head down and giving Jol rope…
new mexican generation watched Mexico lose to USA all the time on TV. They have much less to be butthurt about than Marquez, Blanco, Campos, Hernandez et al.
The difference in the respect level is overdue. I’ll take Cobi Jones over Jermaine Jones in a Nueva York minute. When I see “Jones” and “13″ on the same jersey, I say “Bundesliga schmundesliga.” We are not just now earning respect. Haven’t we beaten Mexico before, including in minor little competions like the World Cup? And the Mexicans need to consider that if Olympic champions can be beaten at 7000 smog-filled feet, perhaps they are not so good.
And that hiding behind smog and altitude at the Senior level might produce false confidence.
You might be better served doing a bit of homework on the levels of smog in Mexico City during the summer before you make such idiotic claims.
None of the Olympic champions played against the US so I’m not sure what you’re referring to and this is not the first time Mexico loses at Azteca. The last two teams to beat Mexico at Azteca have never won a match against Mexico after their Aztecazos.
jeeezz at least Costa Rica did it during the WCQs in an official match and attacked during parts of the game. Talk about delusional…..
I guess the trend of over estimating friendlies is still alive in the minds of some US fans.
Those weren’t the Olympic champions at the Azteca. You’ll see the Olympic champs make their way onto the NT roster soon enough as they push out the older generation. A loss at home in a friendly in which Mexico made six substitutions is not cause for the team or their fan’s confidence to go down. If USMNT fans really want to give weight to friendlies, what would they make of Brazil beating USA 4-1 a couple of days before losing to Mexico 0-2? What do USMNT fans think of their squad losing to Costa Rica earlier this year at the HDC? Friendy losses are shrugged off and friendly wins are kept in perspective for teams that have bigger plans that extend beyond regional dominance.
Direct, articulate, and the only thing that needs to be said to delusional fans.
Mateoflipe, you seem like a pretty thorough guy in your CONCACAF Champions League posts so I thought you’d appreciate this article about air quality in Mexico City.

That way you can stay current and not say things that are no longer corroborated by the facts on the ground. Things change.
Mateofelipe: I think the major difference is that when we beat Mexico now, Mexican players stick around and shake our players hands. This is a pretty recent development, even in a friendly.
On the new found respect? That is total BS the Mexican players did play different in this game. It seem less important to them as in the past. That won’t happen again. If it does those players and their coach will no longer be on that team.
I like tge all out rivalry between the two teams our new players and K don’t have it yet. But they will have it soon.
As a Mexico fan, I have to admit that a lot of the problems in the past could be blamed on the Mexican players (Blanco, Borghetti, Oswaldo Sanchez, Marquez, etc.), but this is a new generation of Mexican soccer players and with it comes an evolution in the mentality of the player. I think a lot of it does have to do with the large number of players for both squads that are now playing in Europe. Plying their trade in Europe keeps them away from any geo-political discussions between the two countries that may make its way onto the field (excluding Tim Howard and his 2011 Gold Cup post-game rant and Rafa Marquez in general).
I don’t think the mentality between the fans will change for a long time, if ever. The lower/middle class people of Mexico will always resent the Americans (see: Mexican-American War, immigration policies) and Americans will always blame their country’s problems on Mexican immigrants. I have friends that are USMNT fans and we are able to grab a beer and watch the game in a civilized manner, but other fans ruin it for everybody. It’s not going to help help fan relations when Mexico fans are throwing beer at the Rose Bowl or Azteca or when USA fans make immigration or racist jokes aimed at Mexico fans.
