How does Alonso Fit Into the National Team Picture? US Open Cup Becomes MLS Fest
Posted on July 6, 2012 4:14 am
The guys discuss the potential inclusion of Alonso (Seattle Sounders) to the US National Team options. Would Klinsmann include him in future lineups? The US Open Cup becomes a MLS festival…On The Straight Red Card. www.thestraightredcard.com.
What’s up with all these idiots suggesting Osvaldo Alonso for the US on bigsoccer lately?
He is cap tied. No exceptions will ever be made for un-cap tying anyone. End of fucking story.
Never say never. There is a slight chance FIFA may make more broadly interpret their own rules on this one. Maybe not, but it is far from black and white.
I thnk the exception is if one has their citizenship revoked against their will, like say Cuban defectors…
I have yet to see any proof that the Cuban government revokes citizenship rights of those who defect.
The FIFA statute actually say “permanently loses the nationality of that country without his consent or against his will due to a decision by a government authority”, which I suppose could mean eiligibility to play for Cuba. You would assume Cuba would at least say that?
I don’t know when the current rule came into effect. However, there’s plenty of examples throughout history of players switching after being cap tied. After all, both Puskas and Di Stefano played for Spain.
I think that FIFA’s rules on allowing players to switch countries were tighted after the 1962 World Cup, when Italy used someone who had played for Brazil in the 1958 World Cup and Spain used a someone who had played for Uruguay in the 1954 World Cup.
Two words: thiago motta. Look him up.
If memory serves me correct (from what Adrian Healey had to say about it during the Italy-US game), Thiago Motta played for Brazil in a Gold Cup. The exception here is that as Brazil is not a CONCACAF member, those games counted for them as glorified friendlies, not enough to cap-tie anyone who played in the tournament. If that is FIFA’s reasoning, then (for instance) if Neven Subotic had been called up for the 2007 Copa America, he still would not have been locked-in with the US.
Btw, that brings even more importance to the question of which confederation will “sponsor” the 2016 Panamericana. If, as I suspect, CONMEBOL alone will do the honors, then none of the CONCACAF teams will be able to cap-tie anyone (which could really hurt a team like Canada, finding out after the fact that new players would still be free to join other national teams).
Hey what are your guys thought of Eric Wynalda joining the Atlanta Silverbacks as coach til mid August and then becoming an Advisor. I feel like if NASL becomes to MLS what the AFL was to the NFL, Eric Wynalda would be the perfect soccer version of Al Davis (during the AFL/NFL war).
The 30% hate liberty and supports Obama and Romney on taking away our rights of the Constitution.lol
Ossie definitely gives more freedom to other players with the ground he covers defensively and constributes occasionally on offense. I have my doubts what FIFA will do.
urgg, they give’n away your jobsssss urrgg XD
Hahaha. Well played
I think Alonso has a chance, not a big chance but a chance none the less, of having FIFA allowing him to play for the US. One thing is that he is banned from representing Cuba since he defected. Two is that he has political asylum here in the US. I think with those to things he has a good case to take to FIFA and if they deny him he can take it to the CAS.
I also think Alonso is a better passer and tackler than Edu and would win that spot in the starting 11 pretty quickly if he is given a chance.
You are SO RIGHT about Bradley. Playing him in the back of the midfield diamond for so long was stupid.
