Timothy Chandler Says “No Thanks” to Jurgen Klinsmann: It’s Serious This Time
Posted on May 16, 2012 2:38 am
The discussion is back on: why did Timothy Chandler refuse Jurgen Klinsmann’s call up to the US National Team squad preparing for CONCACAF qualifying? Was it the Nurnberg influence again? Is he having second thoughts? Or as Brian Sciaretta put it today on twitter: Maybe Timmy’s heart just isn’t in to playing for the US Nats? Does he see Germany on the horizon? Does he deserve another call-up? On The Straight Red Card.
Honestly i am not that surprised about this. He never seemed that happy to play for the US. Just shows us the price u pay when going after dual nationals
You’re happy that he said he appreciated the opportunity? That’s a laugh. Who cares what he thinks? He pimped us to raise his standing and now when he’s needed, he declines.
Time to say good luck and good bye, Timmy. Don’t let the door hit you in the a$$. We’re America, we will survive.
Did you not hear snickering after that? IE it was a laugh, indeed.
This guy did no favors to himself by talking down Germany in 2011.
“I want to play for the United States,” Chandler said bluntly. “I don’t want to play for Germany. I don’t even think about playing for Germany. I played for the youth teams of Germany and it was not so good. Now I get a chance to play for the US team and I see how it is. It’s very good.”
and
It is my goal and dream to represent the United States at the 2014 World Cup. What I said in March is true. I will absolutely not play for Germany. There is no way that will happen.”
What is this kid doing? Does really want to play for Germany and hoaxed us all?
It sucks because i really liked Chandler and he was a favorite. But whats my be bad is that if he really is playing us him and that Hurzeler kid are going to blow it for the German-Americans who really want to play for USA like Jann george, Brooks, Keisewetter, Boyd, Wooten, etc.
Its a bad choice by chandler….This is an important part of the process, and he’s willing to miss it.
No….It is a bad choice for our mediocre coach…He have chose the easy and lacy way by bringing FOREIGN PLAYERS INTO OUR NATIONAL TEAM
If he does go the full Rossi, does he become more hated than Subotic and Rossi? I mean of the 3, he’d be the only one senior capped, and unlike Subotic who felt unwanted and abandoned and Rossi whose father guided him to wear blue, he chose this out of 100% self-interest. Then again, out of the 3, Rossi is the only one to be born in America.
I don’t care about who’s hated and who isn’t. We just can no longer call Chandler up.
There’s nothing more American than doing something out of pure self interest.
Beakmon–that was hilarious… And so very true in many ways. I’d say most of the guys on the US team, and those hoping to make the team, would give their left testicle to make the US National Squad. I hear Jimmy Conrad actually did this one cycle.
This players were not born in USA, Not develop in USA ….As a matter of fact many of them do not even speak English and below average players like Danny Williams…
In my mind, this is a different situation then Rossi and Subotic is its own disaster. Rossi at least grew up here in the States. Chandler has dual citizenship, but nothing about him is “American”. That creates a difference to me…
This is WHY WE NEED TO DEVELOP OUR OWN NATIONAL FOOTBALL SO THIS EMBARRASSING SITUATION WON’T HAPPEN AGAIN
At 22 and getting good minutes in his native country I can totally see how he would want to hold up for a Germany call up. Who wouldn’t?
If he wants to hold up for Germany he should have decided that before he spouted off how much he wants to rep the US and how he doesnt even think of repping Germany (See #1 Feilhaber and Adu quote above).
It’s not the fact that he’s eligible for the US and opts to play for Germany, it’s the fact he used the US if he in fact plays for Germany.
Indeed, but let’s not act surprised by this guy playing the system. The US started doing it when they called players with no relation to US soccer whatsoever.
In my mind, I can see a certain Mr Zimmerman smiling broadly
Yes, lets not be surpised when people do very morally questionabl things for their own advantage. But we can still condemn it.
He doesn’t want to play for the US. Seems pretty straight forward to me. He isn’t like Ronaldo of Brazil or some players that have played upwards of 70 matches and need a break. This is a defender for Nuremberg. Either he doesn’t want to play for the United States, or he is a little bit of a flake. Either way it seems like the United States is better served moving forward without him for now.
I’m sure there were multiple reason Subotic’s decision, but he said in a TV interview I saw quite clearly that he was disrespected by the someone associated with the USSF and he was pissed about it.
Yes. Rongen, the then U-20 coach, messed up.
he may have felt that way but that wasnt his reason for picking Serbia over the US. Brian S. stated it best that he chose Serbia b/c 1) pressure from his father and 2) he’d make more money as a Serb national.
Even Bob mentions it in an article:
“Based upon what we did the last five years in the U.S. and the respect people had for our teams and how we played, if I was Dutch or German or French or Spanish or whatever, I’d have gotten coaching offers in Europe,” Bradley says as he looks out the car window. “But when you’re American, it’s just different. You have to fight for respect. It’s the same way with the players. That’s just the way it is.”
I guess it just goes to show you shouldn’t trust guys in their early 20s to know what they want – who knew?
Why does Klinsmann start sounding like the dog at the end?
Maybe Chandler is sick of being played on the wrong side of the field?
Maybe Chandler is sick of playing with Germans.
It shouldn’t be Klinsmann’s fault, Bradley NEVER played any young people to fully commit them to the US. If we lose him, it will be because we’ve simply missed the window of opportunity with him. That is the USMNT organization’s fault, not JK’s. JK is trying harder to get these young kids fully committed to the US instead of getting hosed each time.
Huh? World Cup qualifying is starting. Yeah, I could start at right back and we could beat Saint Fido and All Fleas, or whoever it is we play first, but we move on after beating Fido. If Chandler wants to wait around and play the field, that is his choice. If Jurgen or whoever is manager finds himself uninterested later on, well, Chandler had his chance.
Fact: Bradley capped the most players of any US national team coach ever.
Bradley might still have a job if Chandler hadn’t crapped on him the first time. We needed him in the Gold Cup, and didn’t have him because he refused a call-up. This is the second time he has refused an important call-up. Klinsmann must take a hard line on this.
Bradley was the one who brought Chandler over to the US and played him on the right side as a wingback and a midfielder (at one point). Not to mention Adu, Bradley, Edu, Shea, etc…
Not sure how you could pin any of this on Bradley.
As for the USSF missing a window, how exactly do you think we could have not missed it? Perhaps call him up to every camp? We did that. Perhaps call him up to the Gold Cup? We did that too. I know, perhaps we should have called him up to a World Cup Qualifier? OH No, wait, we just did that too
Quite simply put, he’s holding out for Germany. He skipped on 2 opportunities that would have cap-tied him to the US. USSF could do NOTHING more on the matter. This is all on Chandler.
I hope Landon get sick and THAT COACH WANABEE GET MASACRE BY CONCACAF….
