Did MLS Really Need to Suspend Simon Borg for His Comments on Female Soccer Fans?

Brett and Derek revisit the Simon Borg suspension for his opinions regarding fanatic women soccer fans. Did the MLS do a good job clarifying Borg’s comments? Did Borg? Was a suspension necessary? On The Straight Red Card.
Borg did not say that “diehard soccer fans might be a turn off to casual fans.” He focused on women. His statement is sexist. Period. End of discussion.
Correct. he did not clarify his statements about “casual followers” thus his mistake. Nor did MLS. I would have liked him to explain those comments myself. Is that what he meant? We here at TSRC are totally against sexism in any fashion, but there is no doubt that MLS and Borg handled the situation poorly.
Football is a men’s sport. Women should not be in the supporters section; it shows a lack of dignity, and who wants to have screaming women shouting at them anyway? Whenever I go with a female friend I just sit with her in the regular seats.
Being sexist is not always a bad thing.
Wow. Where’s the
?
Yeah, i hear that’s one drawback of being a rock star. All those screaming women…yuk! It’s almost bad enough that some guys want to quit.
No one ever needs to do anything…
Should they have? yes, I believe so, sexism or any type of discrimination is always wrong.
@Chris- whoever wants ANYONE screaming at them?…regardless of gender
MLS’ response was lame and weak, but only because they fell back on the cheap and easy solution, ie. force him to sit in some classroom being lectured at by a couple of womyn’s studies grads, like some North Korean political reeducation camp, only without the marching.
Does someone want to honestly argue that making him read and discuss a pile of victimization literature will change his attitudes and make him a different person? Or will it only serve to a) absolve MLS and b) scare Borg into being more careful in the future.
Like most men, I’ve spent a good deal of time engaged in trying to figure out females, and although I’ve long ago surrendered any notion of succeeding at that attempt, I have indeed picked up one or two truths. One of the best – laugh if you want – came from the wonderful and vastly underrated Cyndi Lauper, who said “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”.
Some of us enjoy the hell out of women who can get all face-painted wild and crazy over soccer. They’re not trying to get laid, they’re just having fun, and people – men or women, old people or young – having fun is a source of joy for most normal humans.
Simon Borg, for whatever reason, is OK with girls having SOME fun, probably, maybe, sometimes; they just shouldn’t get too carried away with it and have a LOT of fun, because then they diminish his lust for their naked bodies writhing underneath him.
If MLS had a clue, they’d have canned his stupid worthless ass.
but if they can him they’d lose their only controversial writer. While the other writers get flamed from occasional fans, Simon get’s flamed by most. The “MLS Punching Bag” if you will.
I wish I could rep blog comments, because Bill Archer nails it here.
“Nails it,” eh? I knew we’d get back to the real point of this conversation…
Simon Borg is a feminine hygiene cleaning product. I am sure he is well aware of the fact that he spews no coherent arguments but he loves his paycheck and MLS loves giving it to him./
Simon Borg is soccer’s Rush Limbaugh.
Should have been fired. You can’t antagonize 50% of the population if you’re trying to build a fan base that competes/compares with the more established leagues in the US.
They gave Women’s United FC credence and publicity. That’s bad enough.
I’ve supported soccer teams on three continents, four countries and in dozens of venues. I’ve met supporters from just about every MLS supporters group.
I have yet to see a group that doesn’t have at least a handful of women supporters who put many of their male counterparts to shame in terms of focus, dedication and passion.
This idiot does two things – first is clear, negative about women supporters. But the other thing is he shows he has never been in any of the MLS or US supporters groups.
So the positive I take away from that? I no longer need to worry about whether he has a clue about anything that relates to supporters – because he obviously doesn’t.
I’m pretty sure Borg wouldn’t be caught dead hanging out with lowly members of a supporters group! Greg Lalas too… Both of their poops smell like bacon and caramel.
Bacon and caramel?!!! yum!
He should have been canned long ago just for being making idiotic statements that repeatedly make him look like a clueless moron and thus reflect very poorly on MLS.
Although, maybe he was right about Curtis Ushedo; had Toronto drafted him as Borg pleaded for – literally – and greatly lamented after they didn’t, perhaps they wouldn’t be off to the worst start in MLS history!
The editorial side of Major League Soccer Soccer initially was as much of a disaster as the technical side was. They don’t know how to clarify things, because they are the people who were dumb enough to hire the semi-literate Borg to start with. The suspension was for putting himself in the position of passing judgment on the attractiveness of his customers on an official platform.
“What’s wrong with being sexy?” LOL
Uncalled for suspension. Simon’s point was taken out of context. His co-hosts were cowards because they shy’ed away from his statement and haven’t publicly backed him up.
It all comes down to personal preferences in mates.
