Major League Soccer’s Designated Players: The Best & The Busts on TSRC
Posted on April 24, 2012 4:33 am
Brett and Derek discuss the best and worst designated players ever signed to Major League Soccer, featuring Thierry Henry, Landon Donovan, Juan Pablo Angel, Blanco, and more….On The Straight Red Card.
DC has had few DP busts recently:
Marcelo Gallardo, Branko Boskovic. Salihi is looking to continue that trend.
Denilson……………
So worthless.
Did any player go from World Class to total garbage faster than Denilson?
Gallardo seemed like he was a sure thing before he got to DC. As for Boskovic and Salihi, I’m not sure what DC’s obession is with the Austrian Bundesliga….
I would not say Gallardo was a bust, he performed quite well when he played, but injuries did him in. I would not annoint Henry the best yet. Both Blanco and Schelloto (sp?) took poor to mediocre team and greatly improved them.
As for Donovan, he has a bit of an advantage when compared to other DPs because Donovan played here in his prime. Many of the others came toward the back ends of their careers.
The best DP is David Beckham by far. When it comes to a DP he must be more than a player with just skill. He must push the team forward in terms of new fans. So far only Beckham has done that. Oh and he finally won a cup. Henry might have more skill but the team is still floundering in their own market. To me, a DP puts butts in seats and helps the team collect Silverware. Henry has done very little so far to grow the brand even with a state of the art stadium.
The criteria is not who is the DP who put the most butts in the seats. Derek and Brett are referring to who is the most valuable player ON THE FIELD.
No one mentioning Rafa Marquez? What a Papa Oscar Sierra he is.
Ljungberg carried the Sounders to the ’09 playoffs. Wouldn’t call him a bust.
Nate Freakin’ Jaqua was a more valuable player for the ’09 Sounders. He was not a complete bust, but he may be the whineyest, most self-important something-that-means-complains-a-lot-without-much-merit-yet-is-less-sexist-than-words-that-rhyme-with-itch in the history of the league. My enduring memory of him is with green spots of residue of the plastic field on his face as he complained to the refs. Moments of triumph, as a Sounders fan, do come to mind from ’09, but Ljungberg has little to do with them.
I am more curious as to why he would be considered a bust for Chicago. He had six assists in about five minutes for Chicago and helped them regain a measure of respectability.
You have a very selective memory then.
Well, there was the first USOC final, and he did have good moments. He never gelled with the team, especially Fredy, but he was not one of the great busts, though. Just wouldn’t call him a success.
Agreed, Ljunberg wasn’t a bust for Seattle but was kind of a bust in Chicago… I’m not sure they called him a bust though–they just made fun of his beatching and moaning.
I refer the honorable gentleman to the reply I gave some moments ago above.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto was the best DP. He was an MVP. He lead the Crew to a Supporters Shield. He lead the Crew to MLS Cup title. He scored. He assisted. He was the best.
