MLS Mostly Bows Out of Champions League; Rough Start for Some in MLS

Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders fall out of the CONCACAF Chanpions League. The guys also review the first couple games of MLS season. Who is in trouble? Why does NY look so bad? On The Straight Red Card.
Yes, Frings is very handy.
But the MLS effort may be hamstrung by his injury.
For LA and Seattle, the good news is resilience from CCL disappointment. Test met.
That being said, so far, Seattle has work cut out to be the best in Cascadia. Best in California for LA is less of a challenge.
My male cat objects to your characterization of an unbrave fellow as a certain feline-associated word. Many brave women also might object, like, for instance the mightily victorious Gonzaga Bulldogs who play basketball, but, of course, what do they know? Real women play soccer.
Crap, did I not edit out the word “pussy”? I always do a good job editing out things like that. Crap. Crap. Crap.
PS. Benitez was being a bit of a wanker. Does that even things out.
Old cliche’d excuse of the day: As long as MLS has a 2.5 mil cap along with limited DP, they ain’t gonna hang with the Mexican teams in cup ties. But, but, but, MLS has made significant progress in the grand scheme of things. They will get there and we gotta be patient.
we can contend with Mexican teams at the 2.5M cap (though it’s actually more like 2.6+ at this point) and we have. The problem is simply our inconsistent play. Seattle did well in Seattle, but completely flopped in Mexico. 8-0 is ridiculous regardless of the cap.
I do agree tho that we (as fans) have to be patient and good things will come. Growth not only in fan size, but also quality of play has occurred over the years and we’ll continue to improve.
That is the second reference to 8-0 I have seen. When did that happen. My Sounders’ 1-6 (3-7) scoreline was bad enough. Let’s not gild the lily.
Give it a few years… it will be double digits (and Wikipedia will validate the result)
I think Brett was just exaggerating… Brett? We posted the correct score up during the show–just in case.
Ouch, talk about a screw-up. Not sure why 8-0 was stuck in my head during the vidcast, but the one i typed above in the comment section came strictly from listening to the show before commenting.
I contend that we don’t even know the real difference between FMF & MLS yet because the MLS teams haven’t really pushed the Mexican teams very much… last week’s match at Torreon was a perfect example… Santos never had to accelerate past 2nd gear… the intensity of the match paled vs. a FMF playoff game (and BTW there is a HUGE difference between a playoff match & regular season in Mexico)
So are the Mex clubs just toying with MLS by losing the away matches???
I wouldn’t say toying.. but they definitely don’t play them with the same intensity & focus as a Mexican playoff match. I am not saying the purposely let the MLS teams win… it seems that the players, coaches & management don’t see them as do or die… its kind of like just another regular season fixture sandwiched between two league matches.
As of now, the Mexican clubs (correctly) assume they can moderate their effort initially & then adjust if needed.
Being frank.. Monterrey did have to work hard to beat RSL last year.. but that was a club that hadn’t won a match in Mexico for almost two months… they were on the skids & the win in Salt Lake actually helped spark a revival of sorts. But it still reinforced the idea that Mexican clubs can turn it on in short bursts as needed to win.
I would say FMF brass and the Mexican soccer cognoscenti have reason to be concerned regarding the state of their league and to be honest, the state of their national/club level development programs. In the next 5-10 years, as MLS increases quality of play and the league is able to garner a real television contract, that will act as the economic watershed moment for the league eventually allowing for more roster freedom and larger rosters for that matter. FMF is as good as it is ever going to get, all flat or downhill from here, they have already proven that they are poor at developing world class talent. Alot of their top teams are highly reliant on foreign talent, see Monterrey, without Suazo they would have certainly lost that series against RSL.
When MLS teams like Seattle lose like they did, you will have all these pro-FMF birds come out and start chirping. If FMF was my national league which was founded over 60 years ago, which is my national sport, which has a pedestrian record of producing world quality talent in comparison to Argentina, Brazil and even Uruguay, I wouldn’t chirp, but that’s me.
Yeah like real salt lake and other mls teams dont depend on foreign talent. Mexican teams have a 5 foreign only rule while mls has 15 foreign players on their team because they dont produce any talent like mexican teams do. Forget it, Mexico will continue to dominate the region with an iron fist and now with the new mexican league coming forget about ever surpassing us.
