Camp Cupcake Review: Klinsmann Picks for the Latest US Roster a Breath of Fresh Air?

The guys review Jurgen Klinsmann’s picks for Camp Cupcake, the latest US Roster call up, and discuss Eddie Johnson’s move to Puebla FC on The Straight Red Card.
how ’bout Whitbread from Norwich city?
I actually don’t think Ream is that good, but I also generally dislike the redbulls….except marquez hehe.
Ponce from Chivas would have been awesome at left back, but he rather play for Mexico, can’t fault him for that.
I’ve been watching Whitbread for Norwich and I agree, he needs a look-see on the Nats.
Whitbread wouldnt have been released for this roster. Perhaps the Italy camp or pre-quals camp, but as Camp Cupcake isnt a FIFA date, teams are not forced to release their players (hence the majority of the team being MLS bar Parkhurst)
I mean in general, Whitbread needs a look-see. He’s been pretty solid since coming back from injury.
ponce sucks thats why hes playing for mexico
3 names that should have been there tbh no question… Labrocca, Rolfe, & Dunivant.
NT caps aren’t supposed to be a brass ring for your club career. Dunivant is 31, and the odds are against his being available for 2014, which is the project all this is aimed at. If he beats those odds, there’s plenty of time between now and then to look at him, a Camp Cupcake in 2011 doesn’t really help.
Labrocca plays the most stacked position we’ve got, and at 27 has probably peaked as a good-but-not-dominant player in MLS. It wouldn’t have been an outrage if he were picked, but Zusi is probably more of an x-factor as a player who improved markedly this year, and therefore a better pick. Rolfe I never personally rated, thought he was over-rated because the relative handful of goals he scores tend to be pretty (you get no extra points for that), but I wouldn’t have been too upset if he’d gotten picked. On the NT he’d be purely a change-of-pace player if you’re down a goal with 15 minutes to go, and I don’t know whether we will have the roster space for that type of role.
Big fan of rolfe posting: He was a consistent 7-9 goal scorer for chicago, despite being played at RM for some of his career.
Now having moved abroad and fighting off reoccurring injuries, he’s a consistent starter for his club at LM and playing well.
STILL, if we imagine that our LM depth could consist of Dempsey, Donovan, Shea and Johnson, Rolfe’s odds of making the over team is going to prove difficult. But this is camp cupcake… the kid deserves his chance.
Weren’t Labrocca and Dunivant both part of Greg Seltzer’s list on MLSsoccer.com? Or am I confusing the author with someone else? I remember reading a list on MLSsoccer that included those two and others and thinking: “All those guys are O-L-D, old.”
I’m surprised in the “old guy’s who we know what they bring and its not much” talk you left out Wando! I saw him miss enough sitters and empty neters during the Gold Cup last summer to last a lifetime. Is there not another forward in the player pool that could have filled that roster spot?
Really happy to see John get a call up, I think he has a much higher ceiling than either Ream or Gonzo.
I totally sympathize with the argument that we also know what we’re going to get from Wondo as well, as long as we’re going with that theme.
This call up should consist of players over 25 to see who could step up. Any U-23 players worth while should be in Olympic Camp where JK can watch for standouts and future National Team players. If a young player can’t make the U-23 team this year, they probably are not on JK’s radar.
Umm, this freaking love for Tim Ream is PATHETIC. The guy is USELESS. He should never ever see a US kit again.
who’s love for Ream?
I didn’t feel the love… Did I miss something?
eddie johnson is not going to do anything special in mexico
