Derek gets the Tony Reali treatment on today’s show….
Lebanon play 4-5 games every 4 years? They’re playing at least 16 World Cup qualifiers this cycle, the same as the US, and play a full cycle of Asian Cup qualifiers.
I think we did a good job letting folks know during the show that Lebanon was doing very well this qualifying season, but don’t kid yourself–this is not TYPICAL for them. The discussion was not about the “Asian Cup” but World Cup Qualifiers, of which it is not abnormal for many teams in the current set up who only play a handful of games. Some as few as two. Many as few as 4. That’s just a fact. This is why we pointed out throughout the show that THIS time around, Lebanon are doing quite well.
Well, as the format currently stands it would be a shock for them to have fewer than 8 WC qualifiers.
Anyway, Lebanon is a great place. If the US team is a realistic option for him in the future, seems line a win-win situation for him. I don’t think the negative vibe you guys were giving off was warranted. I’m sure he knows very well what he is doing and what the implications of his choices are.
I think the “negative” vibe was coming from Derek who occasionally seems to play more of that role–while Brett was much more positive that Saad play wherever he wants–with Derek eventually conceding. I also think the “negativity” you sense stems from the fact that Lebanon has never come close to qualifying for a World Cup and went 0-6 in group stage during 2010 AFC qualifying. Regardless, Saad should play where ever his heart is…
Fortunes may be shifting for Lebanon. They may have to invade Syria to bring order to the destabilizing sectarian basket case next door. Ok, not really, but this is not his father’s Lebanon.
Klinsman is certainly getting overpaid on a per-win basis, but this is the difference any company was when they promote from within vs. bringing in the celebrity CEO. Whether you promote an MLS coach or bring in a name, win, baby, win.
Hopefully the US builds off the Slovenia game. Venezuela and Panama are next. I would imagine a MLS/Scandi team should come away with results. At the very least we should see some progress, whether it’s Bunbury, Agudelo, Mix or some other name should player well OR we’ll answer the John/Cameron/Gonzo discussion
Well, count me in the “results count” camp. We should beat Saint Jackoff and his Useless Wonders handily, beat Yes We do have Bananas/Cigars/Baseball easily, and edge out all serious challengers with the possible exception of Mexico. We have been doing that for decades. We are in danger of losing ground to Canada,Honduras, Costa Rica, and the I stole a carrier and started my own country Republic at this rate, to say nothing of Mexico. Halle-damn-lujah. We beat Slovenia. Barely. It means we have a fighting chance against Jamica.
Wow you guys really butchered that “Given” joke.
Yea, thanks brett for explaining the obvious :-/
Yeah, that did suck…ha!
