BTW, as a point of reference, it really does play nice on Linux. Much like the client does in Windows, it only utilizes spare cycles. My load averages have gone way up, but (subjectively speaking) I haven't noticed any ill effects for my web server (which runs a LOT of PHP applications, including Wordpress). I'll have to see if it makes a difference with my PDC, once I get my desktop machine back up and running. If it continues to play nice, I'll add it to other machines I cobble together (like my PBX and perhaps even the Myth boxes, once I get that far).

There hasn't been a lot of interest in the BS folding project. I wonder how many will sign up for the new teams. Nonetheless, I'd rather support the legendary Metrostars (future SuperClub FC) than a forum So let's go team 49413!
Red Bull fans jumped on the new team: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=49413
That idea I learnt in my parallel computing class is fascinating Helping the science to be develeoped is a great feeling.. I hope research in genetics will help people to defeat diseases, especially cancer.
Somehow I find the assignation of cores a bit unfair. I installed this at work (the computer is on 24/7) and I got a 400 frame project. I installed it on my computer at home and I get a 20,000 frame WU! It already crashed my computer so that I had to make a system restore and reinstall everything. My WU is set to be done in 388 days, 20 hours and 55 minutes... lovely. On nutter's computer (yeah, I installed it on his computer too) each from of the 20,000 he's got takes 20 seconds, in my WU they take over half hour each!

How much performance does this actually take up? Like will it adversly affect my websurfing on a , relativelly, packed laptop? What about gaming (mostly WSM, though).
It should have very little impact. It's harder to tell on Windows - because the OS management tools suck - but it appears to play nicely (at least it did last time I ran it on a Windows box). I plays very nicely on a Linux box - it's running on my web/email/samba server, and there is no noticable difference in performance. It does have some consequences, however. First, your processor will be at 99.9% always. This means more power usage, and more heat. Second, I'm not positive how often it hits your hard drive, but I suspect it's fairly often (to be able to swap in and out quickly to avoid dragging down the performance of the host, I would think RAM usage would be ramped down in favor of disk IO). I'd SSH into my server to check, but I'm at work and my DSL connection appears to be temporarily down. This means you can't spin down your hard drive(s), which means more power consumption, and more heat. BTW, many many moons ago, when I ran an old copy of Seti@Home, I used to switch it off before I fired up video games. I found it did have an impact, but I'm often running well behind the cutting edge when it comes to gaming hardware, but not that far behind the edge in gaming software, so every clock cycle counts. I suspect the clients play nicer now, especially on beefy hardware. Switching it off was as simple as right-clicking the tray icon and selecting "suspend".

Joined up, seems like it could be something worthwhile (unless they are really just stealing it for nefarious purpose!). But my WU is due to be done in 2007!!!!
Estimate completion time will correct itself after 10-15 minutes. Even largest WUs can be completed in 4-5 days. Check the point total for all WUs http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummary.html Did you join BS's team or one of the MLS teams (team numbers listed in my post above)?
Of course the good men (maybe women) at BS. My current one is due on May 2 now, not too far away. I have 560 someodd out of 2000 frames completed.
