Listen To This I disagree but I sure am glad so many people subscribe to this idea. It helps keep ticket prices down. Wasn't it Zappa who said "Jazz isn't dead, but it sure smells funny."
Kanye + Beach Boys = West Sounds Meh. Pretty mediocre. Which is why I'm sharing it with y'all: http://www.kanyewestsounds.com/
Brian Jonestown Massacare cancelled there second show in Indy within the past 2 months. Shocking. Anton, just go away and stay away.
If you are in New York City this Saturday, let me suggest you make plans to go see two great bands on one great bill - Philadelphia's The Teeth (whom I've seen live, they rock) along with the superb PAS/CAL (who I hope to see in Sept). Tonic, L.E.S. 9 PM. I wish I could be there.
Is Tonic going to survive? I was getting emails about them doing benefit shows to keep the place operational.
The Dandy Warhols on the other hand, just announced a 9/14 show at CBGB...I'll bet they show (and I'll be there). BJM has got some great tunes, but does Anton really wonder why he was portrayed as a nutcase in that movie (even before he wished death upon the director's unborn child)?
He loves to feed that image to just to keep himself relevant. Apparently he played Indy once before, long before I knew of them and said afterwards he would never play this town again. Well, at least he's living up to his word.
So far so good, I think. They met their fundraising goals earlier this year so at least they're doing better than CBGB. But there's a rumor about a hotel/condo popping up next door and it would only be a matter of time before rent goes up again.
I'm not interested in Rai at all, and I don't care at all for the Rachid Taha songs I've heard, but "Notka" (from Ole Ole) is a delicious slice of rai funk.
Concert Dilema... 3rd week in September, Paul Weller or Sufjan Stevens I have seen Sufjan before (and loved it) but I have not seen Weller. The new Sufjan album is among my favorites of the year. Weller will likely be playing many tunes from a yet to be released album. What to do, kind friends?
Weller. At least, that's the choice I'd make. I have not seen Sufjan live but I've heard a couple of his shows through DIME and they didn't really impress me. On a related note, Sufjan is going to be part of the American Songbook series at the Allen Room at J@LC in Columbus Circle this winter. He'll cost twice as much as he did at the Bowery Ballroom but oh the view...
Really? Do you like Sufjan's studio stuff? I saw him at Schuba's in Chicago last tour and thought it was phenomenal. Have you seen Weller? Good live show, then?
I love the quote from the girl who says, "It's like friends being sexual with each other", and regular hip-hop clubs are too, "hard-core", and, "it's a safe environment to be freaky", so basically this DJ figured out that there are a lot of white people who like hip-hop but would rather not spend time with a bunch of black people then to cover that came up with some anti-white slogan to create some "irony" which would also draw in more people who might as well be wearing blackface. On another note I found this interesting: The Chumbawamba Factor
"Wharf Rat" by the Grateful Dead is one of my favorites by them. Midnight Oil is one of my top 5 bands ever. Many years ago, a tribute album came out called "Deadicated" with 100% of the proceeds going to Greenpeace. Midnight Oil said they'd never heard a single Dead song but wanted to contribute because it supported Greenpeace. Well, without listening to any Dead songs, they picked Wharf Rat based on lyrics alone and then got the sheet music to it. Man, they do an awesome freaking version of it. I know that's about 15 year old news, but it's a cool story and just impresses more when I think about it even all these years later.
I wouldn't go so far as to say Dig Me Out is dated, but there are some moments on that album that are soooo mid-90's.
