If they didn't have a previous visa status, they couldn't reside here until they were approved, right?
Crew have claimed Fanendo Adi on waivers from FCC. They're still paying most of his guaranteed salary.
Caleb Porter is building an MLS Cup championship club in Columbus. the problem is he’s building the 2015 MLS Cup Championship club.
In much hyperbole there's a grain of truth, of course. But unless Zardes is transferred somewhere, or lost to injury, Adi is a backup for the Crew. Then you have Nagbe, who is clearly a step up in quality from anyone we've had at d-mid for a very long time. That's it. I have a hard time seeing these two players - only one of whom is a presumed starter - as being the equivalent of an attempt by Porter at reliving his glory years in Portland.
If Adi is a backup for the Crew, he could be much more expensive for them than some seem to think. Players are under contract to MLS, so MLS is using money from one of the teams to pay his salary. Adi's value on transfermarkt is about 900,000€. Somewhere around there (it's transfermarkt after all[emoji849]) is what FC Cincinnati could have gotten for him if they sold him outside MLS. They supposedly had offers for him from outside the league. I doubt the league would ask FC Cincinnati to take an extra $1 million hit to keep him in the league, and I would imagine that somewhere around there is what Columbus is paying for him. Given his salary, Columbus will have to buy him down or make him a DP. He's not on FC Cincinnati's books as a DP.
Columbus don't have to pay what his prior deal with Cincinnati was. Cincinnati won't have the cap hit, but since they used their 1 buyout on Adi, whatever salary the Crew agree with him on, Cincinnati pays the difference. Sources: Columbus has claimed Fanendo Adi off waivers. No word on what his budget charge will be for Crew. Cincy will pay difference between his salary and that number.Adi reunited with Caleb Porter, who coached him in Portland.— Sam Stejskal (@samstejskal) January 24, 2020
The only thing that makes sense for Cincinnati is Columbus picking up more of his salary than they could have recovered from selling him. If you trust transfermarkt, that's about $1 million.
We have gobs of Garberbucks to pay him down with. But my reading of the rules combined with the fact that some of the reporting (which could be off) has him off FCC's books this year completely leads me to believe: 1) No one claimed him in round 1 of waivers (if a claim is made here, the highest bid wins & the prior club is on the hook, cap wise, for the remainder). 2) We claimed him first in round 2. Which allows FCC to buy him out off book. Seems unlikely the Crew put up a big number in that scenario, since they are bidding vs no one. And if Cincy was more concerned about their cap situation than the buyout cost, it makes sense for them as well.
The only thing that makes sense for Cincinnati would be a trip in the Wayback Machine that allows them to undo signing Adi in the first place. They're on the hook for his (presumed) $2M guaranteed contract in 2020. If they really thought they could have gotten a $1M transfer fee for him to a club that was also willing to take on his $2M MLS contract, well then, they should have done that. Of course, that wasn't going to happen. In short, FCC was screwed. They didn't want Adi. Adi didn't want to play in Cincinnati. But Cincinnati were contractually obligated to pay the guy $2M this season. They determined their only option was to waive him and hope some other club placed a bid to take on a portion of his salary. They'd still have to pay the rest, BUT it would all be off budget and wouldn't, therefore, affect their ability to rebuild their crappy roster.
You have to have 1) someone willing to buy him that can afford his salary and 2) Adi's desire to move to said team. After his last 2 years I don't think there is anyone out there that would actually purchase him that could afford what he would want as a salary. Remember, he was being paid 2 million a year guaranteed. Outside of the big 5 leagues in Europe pretty much only the top couple teams could afford that and most of them wouldn't want Adi at this point in his career. So Cincy bought him out so that they could bring it 3 DPs that the new guys want and clear his salary charge off the books. The Columbus thing is totally unrelated to what FCC did, in that Columbus wasn't going to give them any money for Adi.

.@PaulTenorio and @samstejskal are reporting that Fanendo Adi's budget charge will be $205k with #Crew96. #FCCincy will pay the rest of his nearly $2M salary.I haven't heard the exact number, but Adi's budget charge was described to me as "pennies" compared to his actual salary— Jacob Myers (@_jcmyers) January 27, 2020
RSL losing their best attacker - Jefferson Savarino - at this late date is a big blow. Reportedly sold to Atletico Mineiro in Brazil for $2m plus 40% sell-on. The issue appears to be getting him closer to the Venezuelan border so he and his wife and new baby can interact with family otherwise struggling to get out of Venezuela.

New York Red Bulls sign RB Mandela Egbo. https://www.frontrowsoccer.com/2020/01/30/hell-be-right-back-red-bulls-ink-english-defender-egbo/ Considering that he's not a washout from a Cascadian team, I'm doubtful of his success.
