Really thought we were going to win the league this year, but with Setien, I can see Barca going completely beast mode. Oh well, there's always next year.
Facts don't lie, mate. Over the past decade, we've won 2 La Ligas. Barcelona have won 7. 7. 2. The truth is that they're just kings of Spain, as long as Messi reigns.
I don't doubt Setein is a good coach, but he sold his philosophy to a mid table club with low aspirations and to no name players. It's easy to get buy in. Will he get Messi and the rest of that squad to press and expend that much energy off the ball? Implementing a system like that takes a lot of time, a lot of work, and is hard to do mid-season.
Setien is an absolute Barca romantic. Tiki-taka, total football etc. I doubt he'll do anything that unsettles the club or squad. Honestly, had we brought in Setien, Barca fans would be laughing, now his brand of football and his admiration for barca are key factors, but I oppose old coaches that lack elite level experience on principle.
Sometimes this doesn't matter. When philosophy and a decent roaster meet they can achieve plenty. But coming mid season I don't expect much from him.
It absolutely matters. As a coach you get multiple tags from players and when a player has achieved and competed much higher than you as a coach, he feels you're lucky to even be there.
I get the feeling he is a temporary hire till the summer, when Xavi or Koeman will be available. They absolutely burned bridges with Valverde negotiating publicly with his replacement, so he couldn't stay till the end of the season and Setien was one of the few available options. It could be that the big names (aka Messi) of the team completely lost faith in Valverde which had them scrambling for a replacement, otherwise what an odd thing to do for a team still very competitive in all 3 trophies and from a club that hasn't fired anyone since Van Gaal like 20 years ago.
What happened with him in Betis? I remember there was euphoria, but then suddenly dude basically vanished. If he can`t handle the pressure in fckin Betis, how can he deal with Barca let alone with Barca in such tough spot with ego`s running wild?
Goal reports there is a clause to terminate contract in summer. I am sure there would a compensation fee to that if that is true.
"I thank him that he leaves this team to me in first place in the league." https://www.marca.com/en/football/barcelona/2020/01/14/5e1dcd6346163fcd748b45a5.html

You know you jinxed him and he's going to get cooked by Fortounis or something in the Europe League now do you? Didn't they draw vs South West Derbyhampton or something this weekend? Wake me up when Arsenal have a squad worth watching again.
