Agree that our penalties were excellent and probably unsaveable. Rodrygo’s was almost perfect, the only way he improves that is if he nonchalantly spins the ball on his finger on the way to the penalty spot.

Oblak however turns into a liability as soon as it’s penalties. In the CL final he just stood there for all of our penalties. In this one he went the wrong way every single time. I would seriously consider subbing him in the last minute if it was about to be penalties.

We are much better this season but I thought this cup was supposed to be for the winners from the prior season

Format changed just like CL started allowing non winners from 97. It's here to stay with more revenue and viewership.

    Listen to this:

Valverde will serve a red card ban vs Sevilla in the League because of his red card today, but de Jong was allowed to play vs Atleti despite being sent off vs Espanyol in the match prior to the supercup.

For me he's been unlucky with his career and it all started with him spending way too much time in Castilla. Lost his place at Lyon due to a change in formation (Depay playing central) and wasted an entire two seasons here. He obviously loves Madrid and I actually respect him for taking the gamble, but even back then it was obvious he should have just joined Sevilla.

IMO it is completely wrong and pointless to play the “Spanish Super cup” outside Spain..

First the complaining about James, then complaining about why we're allowed to win and how it "feels" meaningless and now how the entire thing was "pointless" and "wrong".

    Haha

I'm not surprised that us enjoying a title that our supported club won would seem like a circle jerk to you.

It appears so when you start attacking me because I made some comments about this cup not appealing to me because 1st it was played in a country outside of Spain and in a weird country and 2nd us not deserving (based on last season) to be in it. I dont even know, besides the commercial aspect, what was the criteria for which we were chosen.

He gave him a pat on the head as he was leaving the pitch tbf. I can’t remeber myself celebrating a ‘dirty’ tackle like that before.

I think I also called this a pointless cup the other day.

But I don’t think we should underestimate the importance of winning the smaller ‘meaningless’ trophies. Especially with the younger and less experienced players we have. I am happy to win as this could be the foundation for a great run in the league, or maybe more.

Yeah, supercopa is the definition of a mickey mouse cup that doesn't matter and no one actually cares about. And expanding it and playing it midseason in a repressive autocracy is the definition of a shameless money grab (though it seems the entire planet is in the midst of various shameless money grabs)

With that said, I agree that it's worth celebrating seeing the team play the way it did against high level competition. The cup itself is meaningless, but competitive matches against rivals (which as you said are NOT friendlies and it was not played as such) always matter. Something to build on. Attacking issues are a major concern but we are missing our two best players.

The trophy itself is worth about the same to me as one (1) La Liga point, but still nice to see the team play well and take on a rival in a game that the other team clearly wanted to win.

Put another way, it does not matter at all that we won the supercopa.

It DOES matter (and is worth enjoying) that we destroyed Valencia and beat Atleti in two fully competitive matches.

Do people really believe any Cup or Game is meaningless for Real Madrid. FFS people were calling for Zidane's head for losing 7-3 against Atleti in a friendly. Getting knocked out early or losing would only mean dealing with more Poch and Allegri rumours.

Don't think that the supercopa is that meaningless or worthless. Look at how devastating it was to barca. A win is a win. A title is a title.

Even the pointless 7-3 friendly loss put some pressure on us.

Valverde will be missed against sevilla though. And we need benzema.

Not sure why its meaningless. Everyone wanted to win, we did , why is it meaningless again?
