I think I said that. The tenacious part anyway.

Call me old school, but I generally tend to prefer defenders who are good at.......defending. Over guys who are better going forward or good passers.

I mean, both would be nice, but I will take a good defender with issues going forward over a defender who is great going forward but has issues defending.

The second player is a midfielder/winger.

I don’t recall Frankie being a plus defender. Non-stop energy? Yep but not shut down defense at all.

You have to realize that we are comparing Frankie with Yedlin.

Yedlin is not elite but has faced the best of the EPL for multiple years and usually acquits himself well vs. UCL contenders.

I do love Frankie though - we could use his grit - Yedlin is also one of our veterans who never quits.

Agree to disagree on the quality of Yedlin as a player.

Yeah, not sure how anyone who has watched Yedlin over the years at Newcastle could say that he usually acquits himself "well" against UCL quality opponents...

Yedlin and Frankie remind me of each other at least in that they are both physical specimens but both lack skill on the ball to a degree sometimes shocking in a professional player. I always thought Leverkusen bought Frankie on the basis of his desire and physical qualities and assumed he had at least some skill they could work with. They were mistaken.

I'm not sure Tecatito would have done to Heydude what he did to Dest, though.

I'll always love Frankie for his courage, because it frequently did make up for his shortcomings in some key moments. And Tecatito is no Arjen Robben. But it's hard to think of a defensive player who was more thoroughly undone over the course of a single match than Frankie when he was confronted with a (I think) 19 year old Robben in a friendly, many years ago. It was like getting served Sumatran food that was spiced for the locals instead of the tourists. I had to admire the artistry but man that shit hurt.

I'm guessing that DeAndre must've turned down a couple interviews with Brian Straus for you to be this critical but just this year, here's his WS scores vs. UCL teams:

    Chelsea: 7.0
    Man U: 7.2

Yeah, he sucked played defense in a 1-0 victory over Man City and a 1-0 loss to Chelsea.

The grief that yedlin gets on BS is amazing. He’s not a pretty player on the pitch and relies on his elite speed but for FFS, he’s played 100 games on a midrange EPL team over three years running and has consistently shown that he can hang at this level. Is he a shut down guy like Neon Deon or a silky offensive player? Nope but he contributes well enough for a top 100 team and holds his own vs. good teams. That’s pretty fricking good for a YA and we’d be lucky if youngsters like Cannon do better.

Indeed. We have a long history of fullbacks made look bad. Frankie would have given the sneering Tecate a bit of love, though.

Amazing? what do you call this?

p,s. edit - that is excluding Couva. It's doesn't get any better if you include the loss to the team ranked 104 by FIFA.

yeah - he’s had the misfortune of always playing with teams built around Bradley and trapp. His on/off with and without them are telling.

The win over the Caymans? The tie v. Portugal 2nd which they were using to show various players why they would not be making it to World Cup?

Here is my post in reply to a similar reference to Bradley-Trapp inclusions on another thread

Arguing for dest over Yedlin is reasonable - he’s an exciting young player who has broken through one of the world’s elite programs.

that, of course, has nothing to do with Yedlin getting an amazingly high amount of BS grief.

I mean we have a soccer journalist himself or one of his close affiliates saying he’s one of the worst RBs in the EPL despite him continually playing for three years running for a mid table team. incidentally he’s been holding his own and dare I say looks above EPL average at times vs strong UCL level opponents.

forget the EPL yedlin has - since the boneheaded red card in copa america - put in some howlers for usmnt...given up some SOFT goals AND what has his offensive contribution been? ANY assists/goals/etc?

He´s MUCH better than many options the USMNT has and I´m by no means saying don´t call him up or play him...BUT he´s far from a lock "must start" player in the abstract...like a donovan, dempsey, bocanegra, etc were.....

he´s worthy f being on the team but his contributions are a bit lacking imo

Was that the Professor Yedlin who used to fall asleep at the board, while his students slipped out the back?

so we put both in the spots where they imploded in recent games? dest to me looked better right, had a couple left nightmares, and yedlin just seems to get backdoored every other game he plays.

yedlin is not part of your best team. he rarely scores, isn't as productive a crosser as some suggest, and then can't play defense. a bad team is an accumulation of bad choices. yedlin is part of the reason 2018 happened.

there is amnesia about the roles some of the "incumbents" played in 2014. not unlike berhalter who over 3 finals rosters actually played a game and a half with a shot on goal that was saved, in his whole career, yedlin was a 2014 world cup sub -- never started -- and brooks played 45' in one game (Ghana) as a sub, with the header he's remembered for. bradley and jozy are basically the only starters left from the old 2014 team. the 2018 team didn't qualify.

bull. cannon can defend. lovitz i watch teams pick on, on purpose. he may have a reputation from mls but i have never seen it translate. since i don't watch montreal much i am not sure why he even plays here.

cannon has also shown some ability going forward for which he gets no credit.
