How did Veracruz go 41 matches winless when THEY HAD SOMETHING TO PLAY FOR?

They didn't. A $6 million check was all that was required to keep them up.

Contracts were voided. Sounds like the entire club went belly up. Youth and Women's teams were set free as well.

That's too bad about Veracruz. I rooted for them because their name came right out of the 4 a side code u6 handbook, a color and and animal.

This makes now two failures in the two years since Liga MX "reformed" its pro/rel system. In 2018 Lobos BUAP were in the relegation place and paid to stay up. They played one more year and then relocated to Juarez. Now Veracruz has gone under months after paying to stay up. The expulsion of Veracruz means that relegation is fully canceled for 2020, so at least the bottom team won't have to deplete its funds this time.

The other side of the reform, a severe tightening of the requirements for Ascenso MX teams to be licensed for promotion, seems to have fared better. The first season only 7 or 8 teams were eligible for promotion, and the winning team didn't meet the requirements, but now it looks like all Ascenso clubs have upgraded to make themselves eligible.

Yeah, so both of you illustrated the point I was making. We're told that in pro/rel this doesn't happen. Pro/Rel even PREVENTS some of these types of things from happening or that they only occur in closed leagues.

Huh ... soooooo a myriad of variables that WEREN'T the "result of play on the field" are what have tightened up and helped better the 2nd division? It wasn't the prospect of the higher tier and being promoted? It wasn't the dream of top tier football? It wasn't an enhanced drive to do well?

It was fixing most of the OTHER stuff that is involved in running a club?

    WHO'DA THUNK IT

Macclesfield were promoted from the National League two seasons ago so I'm not sure what your point is.

They've been in the Football League for most of this century, but why would anyone buy them now rather than say a debt free semi-pro club like Warrington Town?

    Could Arsenal get relegated?
Could they be the next Leeds United? No.

Leeds were crippled by debt, without a wealthy owner to bail then out.

Stan Kroenke has a cool $9.7 billion in his back pocket, although his fancy new $5 billion stadium in LA is probably consuming his attention.

Not to mention that he married the heir to the Walmart throne as well.....oh and he also owns an NBA team, an NHL team, and a MLS team......yeah, Arsenal aren't going to be relegated. Once they put a competent manager in place they'll solidify this season and build towards 2020-2021.
