Thanks for digging out his goals scored details. Never would have imagined he'd scored 3 on PK's and a 4th on a rebound off of a PK. Rather destroys the idea that he's an exceptional CB goal scoring threat off of set pieces, which is what I'd assumed/hoped from the numbers. Well, it'll take a while to know the answer, but at some point we'll gain a sense of just how good the Crew's scouting operation and talent acquisition operation is. Because this player - on paper - doesn't seem to quite fit the starting CB in MLS bill. Even the MLS announcement about this signing ends by saying that "the team would seem to be in the market for another veteran central defender ahead of 2020." Or maybe this player is simply a low-risk signing who, if he works out, makes the club look like geniuses, but if he stumbles, can be let go - or even just remain as a sub - without having much of an effect on our ability to build out the rest of the roster. In other words, his acquisition wouldn't seem to have a mayor effect on the roster salary cap or our TAM/GAM situation.
I think some people - not you but in general - need to step back and consider the process here. Bezbatchenko and Porter are building a roster to take into the season. Not just starters but a bench as well. Filling that up with young, cheap kids is a sure-fire, well-proven recipe for disaster. Last season I recall people bemoaning the loss of Waylon Francis as if he was the second coming of Gino Padula. In truth he was a player that the Crew had waived, then sold his rights to Seattle for a measly 50k in Garberbux and subsequently ended up appearing for Sounders2 before the Crew in desperation bought him back for the same price. But your choice, because of the salary limitations, is between a bench with a lot of guys like him or recent draftees who may or may not ever amount to anything. It's a very tough balancing act; you can't spend too much but there are few guys on the roster who you aren't going to need to shove out there once in a while and it would be nice if they don't blow a game. Simply not stinking is sometimes all you're really asking and it's veterans you get that from. They may be far from wildly talented but they have been around enough not to do something stupid. Any team needs to build both ends of the roster, not just the first 11 guys. So sure, bring a parade of almosts and never-quites and let's see. It's not science, and the only thing we can legitimately demand is that they get more of these pickups right than wrong, but with the expectation that there will almost certainly be some serious misses. All part of the deal. I for one am finding this whole process fascinating.
I interpreted the quote in the MLSSoccer Dot Com story about this potential signing (it's not an announcement of a confirmed signing) to mean "and this is why they want them some Würmgøre." Either Vito or someone else if negotiations fall through.
I agree absolutely. Frustrating, too, since it's next to impossible to really know what's going on. Funny thing is, I get the sense that, once these deals are completed, Bez in general is very willing to talk about them. It's just that the Dispatch is unlikely to ever ask in a meaningful way about any of this, since our beat reporter has only a rudimentary understanding of MLS roster/salary rules. I couple of weeks ago, I could swear I saw Bez walk out of a deli on High Street as I was driving by. I had half a mind to swerve into a parking space and try and catch him before he drove off, assuming he'd be willing to explain to any interested fan how, say, transfer fees affect the salary cap budget. That kinda thing. I didn't, of course. I didn't have the time, it probably wasn't him, and I make myself look like a fool several times a day as it is and don't really need to add to that tally. Still, inquiring minds, and all that...
I do not think anyone would doubt that you have that sort of thought and dedication. I look forward to some future write-up by you with Bez.
He was captain of the Brann squad and has played at the top level in the Netherlands and Norway. His transfer fee is supposed to be just north of $1 million. I would doubt very much that they bring him here, if signed, to sit and I would think that he would be a DP this year based on the transfer fee alone and a salary similar to the one paid to Mouhktar.
Me, too. I do not mind having solid vets. But we are going to most certainly do both. We have open SR spots, we have open Supplemental spots, we have open Reserve spots, we have an open HG spot. The draft is coming up. And we do have some young guys on the squad. Diaz. Valenzuela. Keita. JJ Williams. Cadden. Rafa Mentzingen showed well in USL I believe. Artur is still pretty young. 7-9 youngish (under 25) seems about right.
And he was absolutely one of the very best with the ball IMO. I hate lazy players, but his quality kept me from seeing anything else.
I assumed he was a free transfer. $1M? Seriously? Transfermarkt says his contract expires 12/31/2019: https://www.transfermarkt.us/vito-wormgoor/profil/spieler/45543 Where'd you read about a $1M+ fee? If we did pay that much (which I'd have a hard time understanding), it would mean he couldn't even join the club until the winter window opens on Feb. 12, right? It would also make him a DP-level signing, unless we used a lot of TAM to buy him down. Just an opinion, but he just doesn't feel like the level of player who'd justify that kind of investment.
I find it extremely unlikely (to put it kindly) that we burn our last DP slot on an out of contract 31 year old defender playing for a mid-table team in Norway when our biggest problem last year was offense. The last DP slot will be an attacker. This guy is a TAM level guy. At best.
It was in another article but it might be just expected transfer value and not considering an out of contract situation. Even without a transfer fee, I'd expect him to be at Mouhktar's salary which would require some GAM/TAM money to get him out of DP status - or whatever the new contract dictates.
One thing that kind of bums me out about the rumored Wormgoor signing is that we will be down to one international spot. I was hoping for multiple international attacking reinforcements. Though, someone could score a Green Card.
Just want to go back to this comment from October 31 and explicitly add up 2+2 here, because I don't see it's been mentioned head-on: Nahuel Barrios fits IM's description, although the transfer fee looks higher than some transfer websites suggest.
Although some view the draft as pointless, I maintain there is still value there (ATL picked Gressell the year we picked Lalas). We have the 7th pick in round 1 and 3 second rounders. We could snag a GA player with #7. I just perused the list and there a lot of bug time names on there, a lot of Crew players, and sime busts as well (Opoku). I think we use those picks to fill out our Supp/Reserve rosters. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_Adidas 97: Brian Dunseth, Ubusuku Abukusumo 98: Tim Howard, Josh Wolff, Ben Olsen, Brian West, Chad McCarty, Matt Napolean. 99: Run DMB, Chris Albright, Dema Kovalenko. 00: Bocanegra, Beckerman, Rimando, Bobby Convey, Danny Califf, Nick Garcia, Mario Longo. 01: Eddie Johnson, Edson Buddle, Santino Quaranta, Jose Burciaga Jr, Devin Barclay. 02: Kyle Martino, Brad Davis, Justin Mapp, Nelson Akwari. 03: Mike Magee, Eddie Gaven, Rico Clark, Brian Carroll, Alecko Eskandarian, Logan Pause, Arturo Alvarez. 04: Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Chad Marshall, Freddy Adu, Clarence Goodson, Steve Cronin, Ned Grabavoy, Ryan Cochrane, Danny Szetela. 05: Brad Guzan, Michael Parkhurst, Drew Moor, Chad Barrett, Tim Ward. 06: Altidore, Kei Kamara, Kljestan, Dax McCarty, Yura Movsisyan, Jed Zayner. 07: Maurice Edu, Anthony Wallace, Chris Seitz, Bakary Soumare. 08: Brek Shea, Tony Beltran, Roger Espinoza, Patrick Nyarko, Chance Myers. 09: Omar Gonzalez, Stefan Frei, Baggio Husidic, Rodney Wallace, Steve Zakuani. 10: Sean Johnson, Ike Opara, Teal Bunbury, Tony Tchani, Jack McInerny, Dilly Duka. 11: Nagbe, Perry Kitchen 12: Dom Dwyer, Darren Mattocks, Rowe 13: Walker Zimmerman, Manneh 14: Andre Blake 15: Cyle Larin, Roldan, Romario Williams. 16: Jack Harrison 17: Jackson Yueill, Miles Robinson, Johnathan Lewis 18: Mason Toye
More of a winger than a CAM, from what I understand. And the fee seems off. But he is 21 and South American.
