Brazil attempts to end what has been a lackluster post-Copa América streak by ending a 5-match winless record as it faces Korea Republic.

This unusual confrontation – Brazil vs. an Asian side – will serve, at least on paper, for Brazil to test other players as the team moves on further away not only from the 2018 World Cup but also from the 1.5 year that followed it. This match also takes some significance as it is the last match Brazil will have before 202 World Cup Qualifying starts in March.

The Koreans, who defeated Germany 2-0 in the group stage in 2018, have played matches since they hammered the last nail into the coffin of the former World Cup champions on Russian soil. And unlike Brazil, Korea has only lost one match – a 0-1 quarterfinal loss to Qatar at the 2019 Asian Cup this past January. The other 20 matches are comprised by 12 wins and 8 draws.

For the Asian side, 2022 WCQ is already underway; the Koreans are safely atop Group H (AFC WCQ groups have 5 teams each), with two wins and two draws:

    • 9/10/2019: 2-0 at Turkmenistan
    • 10/10/2019: 8-0 vs. Sri Lanka
    • 10/15/2019: 0-0 vs. North Korea
    • 11/14/2019: 0-0 at Lebanon
Korea faced – and defeated – two CONMEBOL sides in friendlies this year. First, a 1-0 win vs. Bolivia, followed by a 2-1 victory over Colombia. Both took place in March 4 days apart, in the city of Ulsan. VfL Bochum’s Lee Chung-yong scored the lone goal in the first match while Son and Lee Jae-sung scored in the win over the Cafeteros.

In the Asian roster, the standout is Tottenham Hotspurs’ Son Heung-min, who helped the English side reach the final of the 2018-2019 Champions’ League.

Tite is already under considerable criticism for the unspirited play demonstrated vs. archrival Argentina. And while fans and pressmen alike recognize that some of these friendlies have little value and that players may not be very motivated, a second consecutive defeat and 3rd loss in 6 games could make the pressure rise to a level that Tite might not withstand if the initial WCQ results are unsatisfactory. As disappointing as losing to Argentina was, the South America rival is a stronger team than Korea is, and losing to Korea will be perceived as a somewhat embarrassing result – even though Korea today has many players in Europe and as it is no longer the minnow it was decades ago.

Korea and Brazil have only played 5 times, and there has never been a draw. Brazil has 4 wins, with Korea’s sole win coming off a 1999 friendly in Korea, scored in stoppage time. And all of these 5 matches took place in Korea.

    8/12/1995: 1-0. Goalscorer: Dunga
8/10/1997: 2-1. Goalscorers: Ronaldo, Anderson (Korea scored first). I saw this match; it was quite a sight to see an entourage of Brazilian samba performers in full Carnaval regalia performing and dancing by the sidelines in the chilly Korean autumn weather in front of Korean fans who, let’s just say, were probably not used to fio dental.
3/28/1999: 0-1. Korea scored very late here to win it.
11/20/2002: 3-2. Brazil returned to Korea after the Penta. Korea was up 1-0 and 2-1 before Brazil won 3-2, courtesy of two goals by Ronaldo and a PK goal by Ronaldinho Gaúcho.
10/12/2013: 2-0. 11 years later, Brazil returned to Korea, now during the Neymar era. Neymar and Oscar scored.

The following was the starting XI deployed by head coach Paulo bento in his team's 0-0 WCQ draw vs. Lebanon:
Kim Seung-Gyu; Lee Yong, Kim Jin Su, Kim Min Jae, Jung WooYoung; Hwang In-Beom, Son Heung-Min, Nam-Taehee, Lee JaeSung; Hwang Ui-Jo, Kim Young Gwon.

@12th Player, thanks for reading the opening post. Please do stop by later with some feedback on the current form of your team as some posters here may not be too familiar with what's been happening with the Republic of Korea Team.

5 changes from the starting XI from Friday. From what I see, Brazil is playing with more effort. It could be worse.

And that's all for this match and for 2019 for Brazil. 3-0, the 5-game winless streak is over, Tite's job is secure for now.

Overall though this was probably Brazil's best overall performance since the Copa América final. I admit I didn't watch the entire 90 minutes, but I saw a lot and the players were rather attentive.

Whatever one says about Korea not being the toughest opponent, this team is not the pushover it was decades ago, and this year, it defeated Colombia 2-1.

I hope the change of the starting XI by nearly half the team from the 11 players who were on the field when the match vs. Argentina started isn't a one-time thing. With the passing of time, players' performances go up or down; it's not just teams that are cyclical. So are players. Tite, being a student of the game, will pay attention to UEFA and Brazil teams between now and March.

I must also say I didn't miss Neymar today. Tite did find out he can assemble a working side without Neymar. And, I did write here yesterday that Vanderlei Luxemburgo was hampered by Ronaldo's absence when 2002 WCQ started. Tite may have less overall talent than Luxa did then, but Tite has shown he can select a starting XI without Neymar which can still be very competitive.

Seeing Tite celebrate the 3rd goal as if he had won a WC was pretty sad to see.
