the one time we went, we were upgraded to a room in the white building in the pic with those balcony windows, Hotel Danieli was absolutely incredible from the moment you step out of your water taxi and enter the lobby...but the hotel was just the beginning, Venice was far more beautiful than I'd ever imagined. I know you're joking but it really is quite heart breaking.
The one time I went to Venice (a couple weeks before 9/11), we stayed at a hotel just off Piazza San Marco as well. I agree, Venice is breathtakingly beautiful, and it is heartbreaking to hear about it being flooded. But floods are a regular occurrence because the city was literally built on water. Here's an article from 2015 showing flooding photos at various points over the past century. https://www.theguardian.com/cities/...tory-flooding-sinking-city-venice-in-pictures
Aside from Venice, Florence had a huge flood in 1966. It rained quite a bit when I lived there from 2001-2005 and most people who remember the 66 floods were terrified of the city flooding again. They are also at risk of floods right now..
The residents of Miami need to see those photos, at some point in the not too distant future that will likely be their reality.
Karma. https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/14/europe/veneto-council-climate-change-floods-trnd-intl-scli/index.html
What would have helped Venice will have been the passing and/or completion of the Moses flood defense project, a multibillion-euro project that has been under construction since 2003. The Italian government now expects it to be completed by 2021. They will have never acted on it though had it not been for the floods. The project has not yet been activated and its been delayed repeatedly by corruption scandals, cost overruns and opposition from environmentalists worried about its effects on Venice’s delicate lagoon ecosystem.
