agreed. His contract probably does not start until 2020. Plus it would make no sense to have teams be allowed to sign new players in the off season only to be poached by new teams coming into the league

Not that they'd poach him, but they might take someone who was left unprotected (Bunbury, Agudeo, Fagundez, Delamea, etc.) who would otherwise be protected if they didn't have to include their new signing.

According to Jeff Lemieux, the rules regarding which Homegrown players are eligible have changed. Fagundez is automatically protected, Caldwell isn't.

Interesting decision, if it comes down to exposing Anibaba or Caldwell.

Anibaba or Caldwell? I wouldn't protect both of them. They are less than marginal players.

Caldwell was pretty reliable 2 years ago, but I feel the league is passing his abilities by.

The list is out. The following players were left exposed by the Revs:
    • Juan Agudelo
    • Jalil Anibaba
    • Juan Caicedo
    • Edgar Castillo
    • Cody Cropper
    • Brad Knighton
    • Michael Mancienne
    • Brian Wright
I'd say Anibaba and Knighton are real possibilities to be selected.

Apparently Caicedo is heading back to colombia. His loan is over and the revs declined to buy

I'll be amazed if the Revs lose anyone. And I can't think it matters very much either way.

Anibaba might be a good pickup... He's cheap and versatile, you could do a lot worse.

And I'm sure we all noticed another ex-Rev on the list, "He Who Shan't Be Named."

Right, and if he's on the expansion list, he's pretty much also available by trade for any team who wants him.

I think the issue with him is that, while no one would deny his skills, he pretty much requires being the central figure on the ball, in a more deliberate style than is prevalent in MLS these days. We have the better version of that now in Gil, who operates in a much faster-paced fashion.

Id take him back in a heartbeat and let him set people up (if we had anybody that could finish). Not sure if he'd be open to it but with Burns gone... maybe. Also, with the crap he pulled to get out, he might have burned his bridges. He can't be happy with his role in LAFC as he's not a consistent starter and is not that important to them. I would be amazed if he's not taken by an expansion team.

While I like Gil and he is faster than the subject..... I do not believe he is as good on the ball as he who shall not be named.

That may not be the case. he may have been exposed because he has a very high salary and LAFC are taking a chance that he will not be taken because of that. New teams tend to want to get their own high priced players. At 535k a year. Not really sure of the DP rules but while he is not a DP on LAFC he very well could be on another team

The maximum salary budget charge for a single player is $530K (for 2019). So at best he would require only $5K of TAM.

My take is that he was exposed for salary reasons, but I don't follow LAFC enough to know who the alternative to protecting him was. He could be The Straw That Stirs the Drink with one of the new teams, as opposed to being a cog or bit player with LA, so he might be thinking it's time to move on...

Hard to imagine He Who Shall Not Be Named coming back to NE. Not sure he fits well with the pieces here now.

not sure about the history of expansion draft but rarely has any team ever took a player with a contract that big. Kamara made more but he was immediately traded for an international slot. Mattocks might be the only person close. These expansion drafts are usually to find your average MLS player to fill out the roster not to find your star players.

I agree about 'new' teams, but any team, let say the Revs, for example, that wants him, only has to make a good enough offer to one of the expansion teams and they will have him. So, since he's been exposed, any team can have him - it generally doesn't take that much of an offer to get an expansion team to select and trade a player for you.
I was thinking about this. Burns and Friedel are gone, most likely Arena has a pretty high regard for Nguyen, but I think style-wise I don't think it's a good fit with how Arena wants to play (more urgency going forward with the ball) and I think we already have Gil playing in that role (though much better, IMO). Nguyen, intentionally or not, slowed the pace of the offensive buildup. He drew lots of fouls, but in the end, that usually played into the hands of opponents by giving them a chance to re-organize. In the league today, better to have guys who are too quick to foul (without getting carded).

I think if Nguyen came back here, he would play the 2nd forward position like he did in 2014, rather than a midfield position. So he'd be behind Bou, rather than behind Gil. And there's no point in having a $500k 33 year old backup 2nd striker.
