If you were paying for BR for CL then this new deal will allow you to get a more well rounded streaming service
CBS executives, speaking on the company’s quarterly earnings call, said all Champions League matches will be on CBS All Access and select games will air on the broadcast network #SportsBiz— Scott Soshnick (@soshnick) November 12, 2019 Sounds like CBSSN won't be used at all.
SBJ Media:* CBS put forth an aggressive bid for PGA Tour rights.* CBS All Access likely to carry every UEFA Champions League game.* CBS likely to carry more than just the UCL semis and the final. * CBS Sports Net will carry UCL primetime replays.🔒https://t.co/VCVjAT57yk🔒— John Ourand (@Ourand_Puck) November 12, 2019
Any more info (not paywall blocked) posted about this? I'm not sure *all matches on the streaming platform and *select matches will be on CBS broadcast necessarily excludes games on CBSSN cable.
Right, it could be like TNT/br live where they are on both TNT and on the app. I don't like the wording on the Ourand tweet saying that they'll have replays in primetime, but that could still mean CBSSN carries live games as well.
That's a good point. OTOH, I would be less optimistic because CBS is such an old man's network. The only time I ever watch it is when 60 minutes is covering a topic I'm interested in, and its usually delayed by some golf tournament that runs over its allotted time (plus 60 minutes itself is run by a bunch of 95 year-olds, although some of them have died off). Hence, even though it is one the Big/Original 3 networks I associate it closer to Turner and FOX than I would to ABC or NBC. As such, I'm expecting them to hire a lot of the FOX and Turner "talent" plus add a few of their own old white farts to the mix (wouldn't be surprised if they bring-in a baseball guy from the 1980s),

Europa League & Europa Conference League going to CBS as well... https://worldsoccertalk.com/2019/11/12/cbs-reveals-details-uefa-champions-league-plans/ SA
That basically proves my point. It's a channel that rebranded three times its first 15 years and then became NBC Sports all of a year before Premier League became the feather in its cap. It wasn't well-known or established at all, but it had money behind it like CBS Sports does. It looks like CBS Sports won't air much live anyway, though. Acting like NBC Sports was a proven commodity in 2013 is like saying Spike TV was a known quantity in 2007 because its predecessor, TNN (The Nashville Network), had been around since 1983.
I only watch sports (real ones, not golf) on CBS, but they've been doing big-time events for years. College basketball including the NCAA Tournament, NFL including the Super Bowl, college football, MLB back in the day. So all the TV I don't care to watch on CBS doesn't bother me, they make big sporting events seem big.
The thing I take away from this is that there will be some games on CBS other than the Final which is nice. More than likely Man U, Barca, Real Madrid etc. Personally, I do enjoy the way CBSSN covers the NCAA Basketball tournament and American College football. I prefer it to ESPN's coverage of both sports. It would be nice to see the Champions League advertised during Kentucky Basketball games and Alabama Football games. Lots of potential eyeballs during those regular seasons & additional conference tournaments/ Championship. And Let's not forget CBS can run promos during NFL games too. It will be interesting to see what they do in the studio. Judging by what people say around here they should just take international feeds and not hire anyone locally.
CBS does good job producing things. I only watch their NFL coverage and ocassionaly glance over some other things, and it seems to be well done. I’m curious to see how they approach this. I bet people will be falling of the chairs when they hear Jim Nantz pitching soccer during a PGA event or NFL game or SEC game. It’s the last safe place for all soccer haters.
I think I remember Jim Nantz mentioning B/R soccer matches during the NCAA tournament since Turner and CBS cross-promoted their properties.
Bit of a 'why buy the cow if you can get the milk for free' scenario there. Though I could see a "Champions League" or UEFA channel with highlights and free content on Pluto (there's an MLS channel).
Not saying all games but a random game here and there, just like B/R has a free UCL game and UEL game each matchweek.
FWIW, Seamus Malin once did soccer PbP for CBS. I'd like to think it won't be too confusing for people if some games are on CBS SN and others are on CBS. At least with the Fox contract, games were consistently on all channels. As far as Jim Rome goes, forget him...but isn't his show also on radio? I'd imagine that's where most of his fans follow along. What I am concerned about is CBS cluttering up the screen with their own in-house graphics. Does UEFA mandate a "clean" broadcast? Could CBS put a ticket, a CBS logo and who knows what else?
When did Seamus Malin do play by play for CBS? I remember him doing it for NBC at the 1986 World Cup. But I do not remember CBS broadcasting any professional soccer since the 1974 World Cup.
In the early 80s, New York's WOR was a superstation like WTBS or WGN (although carried by fewer cable companies), and fortunately my local cable company in Florida picked it up and I watched as many Cosmos matches as I could with Jim Karvellas on PxP and Malin on color commentary. In 1982, my friend covered the Tampa Bay Rowdies for a local paper while we were both in college and managed to get me a photographer pass so we got to watch most of that season from the Tampa Stadium press box, and we got to meet Karvellas and Malin when the Cosmos came to town which was fun. (as was the game - the Rowdies equalized *four times* before losing 5-4).
I'm just catching up on this news about CBS getting UEFA TV rights for 2021-22. Assuming this is now the de facto "CBS Soccer" thread(?), then I'll share my thoughts: Very happy to see Turner-B/R go Praying that CBS doesn't acquire B/R's studio show/team... that was horribly embarrassing Also praying CBS will use their multiple cable TV channels to air simultaneous matches, like TUDN does now (and Fox did in past) But sadly I won't be holding my breath on that last one, since they're probably mainly promoting/growing their streaming service
Sadly, I think the best we can hope for is all of the games live behind the paywall and 4 games of the week on CBS Sports Network (Similar to what TBS did.) and a few sprinkled on CBS. There has been mention of games being replayed at night on CBS Sports Network which is something TBS did not do though. I am hoping they replay all the games. IT is not like they have any high ratings shows late-night/ early morning hours.
Years ago I mused the same thing regarding NBC and late night EPL content, only to be shot down every time by @QPR Kevin H who argued that those late night infomercials pay their bills.
