If most teams don't play with a true 10, what are they doing?
You may very well be right. You seem to have many very good insights.
That said, if a player as technically talented and with such a high soccer IQ as Deyna, cannot make or impact the pro game, I find that sad and disappointing.

I know that TDS is not the 'end all, be all' of soccer info. That said, in an article about the NWSL draft, Travis Clark had Deyna at #5 and his cohort Michael Minnich had her at #3.
    Are they just wrong?

I know she's not going to the NWSL for salary and other reasons, but their ratings are what drew my attention.

That was a world class goal on that corner by, who else, Deyna Castellanos!

The goal off the corner kick was world class? All goals are great, I'll just politely disagree on the world class portion of it. The goal keeper must save that. She had plenty of time to react and misjudged it. I think the goal more accurately supports those that argue many college keepers struggle judging balls in the air.

Did anyone else get the impression the FSU coach didn't like the commentator's last question at half time? He was asked about breaking the low block in the second half and he basically blew it off and said they didn't need to if they kept control and didn't let the other team score.

Didn't seem like a bad question but his response seemed terse to me.

I don't know, but FSU fans (maybe Mark too) have the impression Cat is anti FSU.
During the 1st half they mentioned the Miami football game and Cat mentioned it didn't end well for FSU and then chuckled. Maybe she's just awkward, but I can promise you "I" did not appreciate it.

World Class may have been over the top, but Deyna is special on ball delivery on set pieces and otherwise.
Her assist on Jaelin's goal was 'top notch'. You like that description better?

Total agreement on all above! I might even call Jaelin's header "world class", perfect timing, perfect jump, perfect placement low to the corner, and a perfect delivery for the assist.

I'll take a moment and assess FSU as objectively as I can.
    1. Injuries have decimated us this year. 3 players playing with bulky knee braces and visibly NOT at 100%. Nesbeth, Robbins and Lynch. A fourth, Emily Madril, sitting out a 2nd straight year with her 2nd ACL. Those are 4 contributors with at least 2 probable starters in Lynch and Madril
    2. Losing Villalobos midseason to personal reasons just exacerbated that problem.
    3. As a result of the above 2 our Wide midfielders are subpar significantly as opposed to last year.
    4. We do OK attacking up the right, with back support, but we largely ignore the left because Newton either can't or won't attack. That eliminates at least 1/3 of the final third.
    5. Payne in the back line is a significant drop off from Kuikka and it shows. What really hurts is that when she dribbles forward, her passes are very inconsistent, some might call her a turn over machine. To her credit, she is willing to attack and has some on ball skills to play with.
    6. Our goalkeeping is not at the level FSU should and has had. The reason it worked during the tournament is the Kuikka led defense only allowed 3 SOG in the 2 CC games against Stanford and UNC.
This defense will not do that.
7..Yujie has dropped off this year, disappearing for long periods of time.
    8. Deyna has been and continues to be sublime at times. Her in play service, corners and other passes are sublime. I'll be very interested in seeing how she translates to the pro game.
Unlike another respected poster, I have a hard time believing her possession, passing and shot making skills won't translate.
    9. This team doesn't have the chemistry (at this point) to beat the best teams out there. (Stanford, UNC and UVA). Can it get better? yes.
Will it? Maybe, but I doubt it.

p.s. I like our offensive danger when Thomas is in the game.

p.s.s. Despite losing Deyna and CJ, next year's team should be very good. Getting the 4 players (#1 above) back at full speed should make a big difference. Our wings should be better and Jenna can move in to where Deyna was. That should be more natural for her.
Now to get at least 1 gem of an international.

First time for Payne playing defender she is and attacker for Ireland. However I think Payne has been better than Pav and at time Carle. Unfair to compare her to possibly the best defender in FSUs history, apologies to Casey Short.

Lol, Cat isnt ms. Personality and quite franlky is not a good commentator. She doesn't even try to remain remian neutral and cracks on all teams not named UNC. She did remark at how good of a passer Deyna has become.

I have great hopes for HP going forward. The knock on Gabby Carle for her first 1.5 years, was she'd make great runs to the final third (even end line) and then make pathetic passes. HP has an attacking mentality, but the current reality is her passing is very inconsistent (to put it kindly).
Next year she may be great!
It looked like for much of the first half they had Gabby in the center with MB and HP out wide, but in the 2nd half it reverted back.

    https://mvasports.com/news/2019/2/7...hlete-jody-brown-is-fifa-world-cup-bound.aspx

I couldn't find a lot of video on her, but she is considered to be the future of Jamaican soccer, although Bunny Shaw may have something to say about that.

I'm guessing this isn't a coincidence, but Cheyna (Williams) Mathews was on their national team as well.
    Go Noles!
She is probably that skilled and high pace forward I've been coveting.
A little salve to heal the wound of losing Deyna.

She was put on the CONCACAF 2018 Best X1 and voted best young player at that tournament that qualified Jamaica for the 19 WWC.
TDS has her at #90, but somehow I think she may be a tad better than that ranking.

FSU have not released Heather Payne for the Euro qualifiers the Ireland manager is furious. Amazingly the NCAA is not under the FIFA umbrella, so they can actually block players unlike the clubs who can't.

She missed the USC/UCLA series (and one other I think) already so she can stuff it with the woe-is-me act.

Also, I think most foreign players who find themselves in a good US program learn quite a bit - especially about being tougher. She could confirm that fact by simply going down to the hall as asking The Megs.

As I understand it, Payne wants to play in these qualifiers for her national team, so FSU is doing her a disservice by not releasing her. If I was a national team player being recruited by U.S. colleges, I would get a firm, written commitment from the coach that I be allowed to leave for all national team camps/games. If you don't get such a commitment, you risk this happening. And it's also worth noting that FSU could be jeopardizing Payne's NT career with this move.

I'm pretty sure that if you look back over the last 15 years (at least at FSU) on how Coach K has been more than accommodating with all of his international players and their NT duties you'll see that he's pretty good at putting their desires up there with the requirements of the NCAA/ACC schedule. Otherwise, they wouldn't come to FSU in the first place. And they wouldn't have kept coming.

If the IRE coach, who is in her second game with the team, wants to punish a player over this kind of thing she might end up finding herself managing the local youth club in Galway. Managers have to be flexible. I honestly think this is more her not liking or appreciating the American Collegiate system than anything.

I am genuinely amazed that FIFA has no jurisdiction over the NCAA.

If you ever think that FIFA is an inept and overtly complicated organization designed to siphon money from one place to the pockets of a few - with no taxes levied, brother, allow me to introduce you to the NCAA. :)
