Pulling Sanchez after five and thinking Corbin could come in because all of these years later the Nats still have no bullpen is a reminder that this is a Mystics town.
In my opinion, D.C. never really was a soccer town. What United had going for it was a hardcore of dedicated soccer fans and wide base of college students, young professionals and suburban families who enjoyed sampling games. It other words, it was never more than a cult phenomenon. What has happened under the current ownership is that hardcore supporters are dropping out. On the other hand, Washington was always a very good baseball town and has become a good hockey town since the Caps won the NHL championship. The Mystics, however, are more of a cult phenomenon like United and their base is loyal but small. The Washington NFL team remains a comatose giant under the ownership of Danny Wannabe.. Although their base is small, the Spirit have the opportunity to swipe at least a few of the former United hardcore and, from my personal contacts, that's already happening. Loudon County might have an opportunity along these lines, too.
DC is a basketball town with a football problem. The western suburbs and more recent arrivals have gravitated toward the Caps and Nats during some of the good times. It's worth remembering how far those teams have come in recent years compared to how far United has fallen. It wasn't that long ago that United would get better ratings on CSN than the Caps and both were well behind the Bullets. The football team continues to crater yet its incredibly a sleeping giant and people are still yearning for anything positive around that team. There's plenty of room for United to have a significantly greater profile. I wish the Spirit could return to DC permanently and that both the Spirit and 'Stics had longer seasons.
I will be watching the Nationals in the National League Championship Series while at the US national team game in the Nations League. As I said, this is a baseball town... for the next 19 hours. #BigSticsEnergy
Well Beerholder's team shit the bed so bad they had to burn the sheets and the mattress. Watching Matt Doyle's head explode was entertaining. This team and its coach are shit, they won't make it out of the Hex (if they even get there). Glad getting rid of Gulati solved all the problems (sarcasm font).
With the new format we're pretty much guaranteed a spot in the hex (Top 6 in FIFA ranking). So all we have to do is stay ahead of ...Canada (#75)..... Well maybe El Salvador if Canada passes them. Its a joke we're at 21. But i cant imagine anything at all could happen to drop us into the 70's. Could see us eing 4th and having to pkay another playoff against the 7th-35th tournament winner. Curacao is getting so much better. https://www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/ranking-table/men/#CONCACAF
How have I not previously noticed this thread says 2018 on it Short news story about the first soccer specific stadium in the US going bye-bye and some of the great teams (mostly because DC United was one of them) and players who have played there. Great stadium, even greater pub. She will be missed. Nine MLS Homegrown stars named to United States U-17 World Cup roster Yow & Kayo start play tomorrow. Thx, Jay!
Yow started. If by “just got into the game” you mean “finally decided to start playing better” you were right. Thx, Jay!
What's happening with the whole USMNT setup? All of the teams have no balls. The women took them all! No fight, no playing to have each others back. I can't watch them anymore.
The passing in the U-17 side is just as bad as the passing in the full team. Just terrible. Same "grabby" defense too. It's gonna be a long generation for the US team(s).
Odd how poorly they played. They did really well to get here, and did well in the tourney in France. They're kids. Hopefully Coach Tab will be able turn this around.
They mentioned a US coach once or twice during the FS2 replay I watched last night and I had never heard of the guy (I do not know everyone involved in USSoccer, but I thought most coaches names were recognizable)
