I'm sorry, this is actually very true and I should have listed it. And I'd add that CONCACAF as a whole continues to get better. Meanwhile it seems like our program has maxed out...in our current form...which Gregg seems to be trying to address but...results...eh...it's a tough spot.
To be fair, the US is a solid team at home and are favorites for the November game. However the USMNT plays WAY too much at home. The Canada loss is confirmation of the USMNT having a problem on the road and that started before both Arena and GGG. Trust me, not addressing that leads to nowhere good. The US should encourage CONCACAF to have the Gold Cup in Central America. Winning consistently on away games would have huge benefits but that's something the team must learn to do...which they aren't at the moment
Ok - say he does what you ask, and coaches the hell out of his system and players against Canada. We beat them 3-0 and look fine to good. Then what? That's good enough to keep going? Beating Canada at home is now a result you look at and think "ok, phew, we're really moving now". I'd fire him asap, of course, as he's had a year to shape the team and just came up with the worst result yet. He has not overseen one impressive match. No players he selects (outside of Morris?) are outplaying expectations. I think it's a slippery slope when you don't look at this in totality. Ohhh, he's coaching for his job now against Canada. We haven't lost to Canada in 35 years, why is suddenly beating them at home enough, despite a full year of evidence to the contrary, to make anyone think he's going to be successful?
What teams above us in the ranking did we beat in meaningful games under Klinsmann in his six years tenure?
Canada did better than the US before the 90s in WCQ And when facing one another. That's why there are cycles! Look at Chile, Italy, Germany and Netherlands. Cycles are inevitable and the US arent immune to that. Other teams will rise, others will decline and rebuild, that's football. Even France & England missed World Cups, so I dont get this "entitlement" to being #2 in CONCACAF forever. Even Mexico went through it when it was Salvador and Haiti going instead.
Also, to those clamoring for a top manager, if you were someone who could choose, why would you choose a federation like the USSF? I know I wouldn't. I'd take a job for half the money in a federation that actually works and doesn't have established cliques. As a manager, taking a job where for sure you're going to fail is a much worse decision than it is as a player: 1) as a manager you have many more years of possible employment, no need to ruin your long-term future over a cash grab; b) as a manager, the gap in salaries is never as huge.
The first two links you provided didn't work. The last didn't say anything about Garber saying that "one of MLS's duties is producing players for the NT." He said the opposite on Wahl's podcast. Show me where he says "one of MLS's duties is producing players for the NT."
im all for friendly banter, but settle down there lil mountie. its clearly very important to you everyone recognize your team is improved and werent complete bystanders- we do. but we dont need a whole lot of input a-boot our dumpster fire from other teams fans. beat us again before 2056 or qualify for a world cup and maybe ill be more inclined to listen...
Road record in WCQing during each of the 2010 and 2014 cycles was 2wins, 2 losses, 1 draw. Frequently playing at home isn't the cause of the team's problems.
I would like him to show me that he can take care of business. Control the game and get the result. Then I'd like to see it again. No. I wouldn't fire him just yet, but it's tough to argue the rest of this. Which again points to the question at hand. Is it okay to say these games are all training exercises? "Hey, we're trying to play soccer in a way we haven't before! Screw results until qualifying!" Is that what he's been doing? I'm not sure how much importance he's been putting on results.
I'm Still trying to figure out why NONE of the cb are allowed to make any pass, except a short one....... When 45% of the time it's passed to the DM, who makes a predictable 30 YARD PASS????????? It's so predictable it's pathetic. USA could line up with ANYONES preferred eleven on this forum which most likely would be would be a better pick than Berhalters. But it would not matter, they are playing like brainwashed children. When is someone going to step it up and say enough is enough?
Our coach is calling a subset of poor players and then puts all the players in a system that accentuates their developmental areas and mutes their strengths. Congrats on the win but you still have an uphill climb to make a World Cup.
Like everyone else here buddy, I love Canada. Your wonderful country allowed me to visit my first strip club when I was there for a hoops tourney in high school. It was/is wonderful. Likewise - Congrats on your win. You guys are improving and it's nice to see for CONCACAF. However - can you please keep this USA News & Analysis board thread on the topic of USA? The game is over, we got destroyed. Why do you need to continue bringing up Canada like any of us care? Please stop. You post a ton and it's getting slightly annoying scrolling through your posts decrying the disrespect shown to Canada. Thanks.
The players getting cale Agree........ not one person here is saying Canada didn't deserve the win. This guy has a chip on his shoulder, and honestly, it's annoying but I kind of like it. I wish the USA fanbase had a reason to stand up and defend the USA team right now for the poor results.
https://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/16/sports/soccer/don-garber-criticizes-jurgen-klinsmann-for-comments-about-mls.html Don Garber Criticizes Jurgen Klinsmann for Comments About M.L.S. He added, “To have a national team coach saying that signing with our league is not going to be good for their careers, and not good for their prospects with the national team, is incredibly damaging to our league.” https://www.espn.com/soccer/major-league-soccer/story/2737640/finlay making case for usmnt call-up?src=com Jurgen Klinsmann doesn't answer to me on U.S. player selection - Garber A day earlier, Garber was quoted as saying that the fact that MLS standouts such as Columbus Crew SC's Ethan Finlay, Benny Feilhaber of Sporting Kansas City and New York Red Bulls Dax McCarty and Luis Robles -- all of whom were named to the league's Best XI on Sunday -- have not been called up by Klinsmann this year is "unfair and unwarranted" and bothers him "deeply." https://soccer.nbcsports.com/2014/10/15/don-garber-klinsmanns-comments-on-mls-are-frustrating-as-hell/ Bottom line, Garber said, was that the time had come for Klinsmann to “embrace the vision” that US Soccer and MLS remain “inextricably linked” in order to grow the game in the US. “We need deep alignment with everyone who is an influencer in the sport,” Garber said. “I not only ask this but I insist that everyone who is paid to work in this sport that they align with the vision… And I don’t think the comments from Klinsmann did this. . . . I believe his comments are at odds with what we collectively believe what we’re trying to achieve together. https://www.oregonlive.com/timbers/2014/10/mls_commissioner_don_garber_cr.html MLS Commissioner Don Garber criticizes Jurgen Klinsmann for 'damaging' comments' Garber took exception with Klinsmann's stance that MLS has hindered player development. Klinsmann indicated that the national team players would have a better opportunity to develop by playing in the top leagues in Europe and competing against the best competition in the world. "I think his comments send the wrong message to other young players... I think it's going to send the wrong message to players we are trying to sign from overseas," Garber said. "The only way we will continue to grow and prosper the way we have over the last 20 years will be to continue to have a close relationship with our federation."
Anyone have a link and timestamp to the podcast where Garber is now stating NT player dev is not MLS's responsibility?
I don't see any top manager tolerating the way things are done. They may have asked around, but we have no idea how big was their interest. Tata, in the Spanish media, never gave the impression of being too interested. It was between Mexico and Argentina for him.
So you think Lichaj, Holmes and a just recovered Morales would have made a world of difference? Or perhaps you want Novakovich (when was the last time he scored?), Wright, Amon (not even making the squad), Dani Williams (in a Cyprus bottom-feeders), called? That entire "it was not our best players" thing is the permanent excuse we give for any loss. It's embarrassing. Time to man up and say, "we lost because we just don't have enough good players, with a better coach we may have obtained a better result."
