As a whole player he will, as a pure CB we need to hope. Actually Tullio+Nakazawa was the best ever CBs couple of JNT with their most important performance at WC2010 as I always recall (they permitted only 2 goals, 1 irregular and 1 by pk).

Not at all, he cost nearly 10 millions euros and was the best CB in Belgium last year.

Well its a huge difference. Leaguewise. And not the first time an asian player would have failed.

Rollercoaster game today. Down 3-1, one Brescia player got red carded and from there chaos ensured. Won 3-4!
Was Tomi's "worst" game yet but by no means a bad one.

Crazy game indeed, with Tomiyasu having many duels with another promising youngster Sandro Tonali from Brescia, and he successfully managed to win most of the duels.

Tonali is a 19 years-old, and is likened to Andrea Pirlo, with both of them were born in Lombardy and grow in Brescia’s youth system (both are set-pieces specialists).

If both Tomiyasu and Tonali developed positively I think they will be purchased by one of the top teams in Italy within the next 2 seasons. We might have a Tomiyasu vs Tonali confrontation in Milan’s derby in the foreseeable future, or in Juventus vs one of the Milan’s giants.

What I hope we might have is Tomiyasu CB because the other players are not nearly as good as he is. Waste of time.

"Milan giants " must be avoided as hell.
I mean AC Milan is dead while Internazionale FC is a double edged weapon especially for a japanese player (Nagatomo was still labelled as a japanese clown from his first day till the last day in Milan despite his commitment, loyalty and hard work) and they are easy to collapse youngsters' career or undervalue and depress them till they step up when transfer in other teams.

Juventus is near a great generational change especially for the defence with the historic BBC now dismissed as Chiellini is probably out for half or more season and he's old while De Ligt is far from impress with his poor performance.
That's why I hope Tomiyasu will keep play good and lure their attention especially now that the club is interested in consolidating his role in asian market.

The duo was unsettled at the WC level without Abe's covering role and bunker-ball tactics Japan used in 2010 to make up for their lack of speed. Yoshida-Tomiyasu or even Yoshida-Shoji is much better than them.

One can't disagree that Tulio+Nakazawa was our best CB duo until now, but it seems no one remembers of the pre-Word Cup games in 2010 anymore...

I remember their owngoals in the friendly vs England.
But it was BEFORE Okada invented the triple combo:

    1. Out Morimoto/Okazaki + Honda false9
    2. Abe in front of the defence
    3. Miracle-man Kawashina instead of Kawaguchi-senpai

It simply works PERFECTLY. It's obvious that you can't rely only in a good CBs pair, all the gears need to work correctly.
That's why it will pass ages before we will see another JNT defence so strong in a WC.

We need a player like Abe to cover the CBs. Hopefully, the likes of Itakura, Endo , etc. can fill up that role in the future.

Looks like he struggled to deal with Kolarov, but acting manager De Leo remarked that it was also down to Orsolini not pressing his man well enough.

Overall a not very good performance, but Bologna's goal started from a ball intercepted by him.

His 64% duel winning percentage is the second best in the Serie A.

Yes, CB for the first time.

Thank you for reminding me as I was watching Urawa vs Al-Hilal and unaware that Tomiyasu’s match is taking place in few minutes time.

Just to be clear, it's not a "change of idea" unfortunately but a forced choice. Bani and Danilo are disqualified.

The coach could still fielded Medel as a CB, Poli as a CM, and Tomiyasu as a RB. He did it preciously when one of the CBs was injured during one of the matches

Your point is good, but as I said the coach still had another option and he started with Tomiyasu as a CB instead.

Let’s see how his situation will develop.

Yeah, but that seems kind of an extreme last option as Medel is still 170 cm. I didn't remember about this happening mid-match but this seems the most rational option, even though Medel has played CB in the past a few times.
Anyway, he's doing ok so far, though he's really picking up a bit too many yellows.
