Made the worse transfers list. Worst Premier League signings of the summer including Arsenal’s £72m buy Nicolas Pepe and Chelsea outcast Christian Pulisic https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/foot...cebook&utm_source=Facebook#Echobox=1570544608
Almost no player is. Willian won’t keep this form up. If he does, I’ll be blown away. In his first three games this season he was rated a 3, 5 and 5 respectively per WAGNH ratings. He was ********ing awful. Pulisic never came close to being that bad. Now Willy is in FINE form. This happens almost every season he’s played for the team, causing a huge rift in how he’s viewed by the Chelsea faithful. Right now, it seems we need Willian cover for Azpi’s shortcomings this season. He’s also managed to be more potent in attack than he usually is. Again, don’t expect this to keep up. It’s the same Willian who has lost his place in the team to Pedro. Mount and CHO are hardly undroppable either. Players get injured. Oh, and Pul is actually a huge talent! With 50+ games to play and Pulisic coming on and playing an absolutely gorgeous assist on Sunday, it will be hard for Lampard to not play him more as he’s clearly useful. I remain optimistic for Christian. The mentality on this page is like a parody of itself.
Seems awfully early for this piece... but I get it. These media outlets are looking for clicks and outrage. At least they say he has been reasonable on the pitch. It is a long season and if CP can make the most of his limited opportunities then he should see more of the pitch and this article will just be forgotten.
The English football media is totally insane. How can you declare anyone a FLOP or "WORST" signing after like 7 games? Just to sell papers and get HITS
What are the odds Frank gives minutes to that James kid? I was impressed with him, and at the very least his energy would provide a contrast to what Azpi has been doing lately. We are not far removed from me thinking Azpi was the best defender in the league, I don't really know what happened. I guess it can go quickly with fullbacks. Ivanovic seemed to turn into a nightmare overnight, too. Is this all overblown a little, or has Azpi been that bad, do you think?
That is what they do. Nothing unusual with the way they are reporting. Pulisic can prove them wrong and it looks like he is going to try and will probably succeed.
In general, headlines and the actual articles are written by different people. Editors usually get to write the headlines. The article says he has not yet justified his price but the headline is sensational nonsense.
1 - It's The Sun, the definition of garbage press in what respects soccer (and pretty much everything else); 2 - So far it's only the 2019 summer, who cares. What matters is that in a year from now he's not making the Worst EVER Premier Signings lists. PS: Even the Sun admits what's going on with Pulisic is not entirely fair: "Over in West London, Christian Pulisic has played reasonably when given the chance, with four assists in seven games. "But Frank Lampard is increasingly reluctant to trust the young American, handing him fewer minutes than Willian and Pedro - before dropping Callum Hudson-Odoi in ahead of Pulisic for the trip to Southampton."
I would add Hazard and Griezmann to the La Liga list as well. DeLight isn't looking too brilliant for Juve either. It takes time to adjust to a new team and league.
Daily Mail (a better publication than The Sun in sports) rated him #1 Worst Striker of all Premiership history. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...rst-strikers-Premier-League-history-20-1.html I like Jozy, but I agree. For the number of minutes played, for the chances given, for the shots totally wasted, for the number of important games where he was the main man in front and shanked balls everywhere but in the right direction, our Altidore deserves the title. And, as I wrote above, if Puli doesn't get another chance (but Pepe does), or wastes his chances and never again starts for a meaningful league game, he risks becoming the #1 Worst Buy in EPL (and soccer) history.
That's quite comical as it makes very little sense. I could imagine him in top 20 but it's not like he was a super expensive buy and played like 5 games because of how dreadful he was.
I think being expensive has nothing to do with this "ranking" If they sign me for free, I will out-rank Jozy. Sucking for a longer period of time (over 5 games) will also increase my ranking.
Without looking at that list as a reference, I would put Shevchenko at the top of my list. In fact Chelsea might have a few names in my top 10. Fernando Torres, Kevin de Bruyne, Mo Salah, and Juan Cuadrado would make my list.
Sure... but if he goes on to another team and succeeds then it is on Chelsea and Frank... not him. I think his numbers are pretty decent considering his age and the intro to the new league. He has certainly been a lot better than Pepe despite the lack of opportunities.
It's worst striker though not worst signing so price/prior reputation shouldn't matter (although I'd also note Altidore was a fairly significant investment for both the PL clubs he signed for). Shevchenko scored about 1 in 10 at Chelsea, Altidore was at 1 in 35. I can't think of any striker who played a significant amount of PL games with a worse record than that.
When they say "worst striker" they don't mean fastest flop or biggest waste of money. They mean "worst striker," a guy who is supposed to score yet time and again, week after week, month after month, season after season proves to be in way above his head. A guy who gets five games and is sent to the reserves because he's a terrible player won't quality, since he didn't prove it beyond any doubt, he may have had a bad run. But Jozy is legendary. 70 games, 3540 minutes, 2 goals. It's the sort of record that stands the test of time.
So does Lampard care how Pulisic performs for the U.S. or does he only care about practices and game performances with Chelsea? How much thought does he give these national team breaks?
I can’t imagine he gives much thought except for no injuries. US doesn’t play the same way as Chelsea and expectations for CP are different.
The national time break provides a little perspective on Pulisic's challenge for playing time. The following Chelsea midfielders and attackers played for top European national teams (all four WC 2018 semifinalists, plus Italy) during the weekend's Euro qualifiers: Mount, Barkley, Kovacic, Jorginho, Giroud, Abraham, Batshuayi. Aside from Abraham, they all played significant minutes.
Why would a club manager spend time evaluating their player, a player they see in practice every day, play in a different style, in a system the player doesn't know, with different teammates, against lesser competition, etc, etc. I actually think this is one of the huge drawbacks of Berhalter's rather complicated, for a national team, system. Players getting used to new clubs don't need the confusion. Lampard knows as much as he wants to know about Pulisic.
