To close a loop opened on the Detective Work thread, "Maxi" (I just made that up, have no idea if it's his real nickname, but why not) is indeed a YA. He's listed as a midfielder on their U17s: Dietz, Maximilian Mittelfeld https://www.scfreiburg.com/teams/junioren/u17/kader An '02 according to FuPa: https://www.fupa.net/spieler/maximilian-dietz-912075.html Spent the previous season at FSV Frankfurt. http://www.fsv-frankfurt.de/cms/index.php?id=153
an update on this guy. he played 1 minute as a sub for Freiburg U19 on Nov 10 vs Stuttgart U19 in a 2-1 loss. Can't seem to find too much info on his U17 stats. Since U17 were relegated last season to lower level.
helped Freiburg U17 to get promotion to the U17 Sud/Sudwest as they won their league. Not that it means anything for him since he's a 02 so no longer eligible for U17 next season, where he will move up to U19. It's the 03s and younger who will benefit from the higher level promotion. was also called up to a Germany U17 camp back in early-mid May.
Called up for the US U17s: MIDFIELDERS (6): Maximilian Dietz (SC Freiburg/GER; Frankfurt, Germany), Ethan Dobbelaere (Seattle Sounders FC; Seattle, Wash.), Gilbert Fuentes (San Jose Earthquakes; Tracy, Calif.), Bryang Kayo (D.C. United; Poolesville, Md.), Daniel Leyva (Seattle Sounders FC; Las Vegas, Nev.), Adam Saldana (LA Galaxy; Panorama City, Calif.) https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...-with-28-player-training-camp-in-carson-calif
Always nice to see another guy from a semi-random thread get a meaningful opportunity. Here are few videos. Short 2018 interview in German -- you can at least see his face and hear his voice: A goal from earlier this year: A PK from last year: Another 2018 goal, off a long-distance strike: A 2017 PK:
according to TM, he's born in Frankfurt. https://www.transfermarkt.us/maximilian-dietz/profil/spieler/515964 any idea what's his USA connection? Did he live there? Parentage (his surname Dietz is German).
According to the USSF U17 World Cup press release today, he was born in New York and raised in Frankfurt. It also seems he has at least one sibling still living in the US (Pennsylvania). He briefly appears in a playful interview on the USYNT Twitter feed and seems to be perfectly fluent in English, so likely a significant American influence in upbringing.

was unused bench today in Freiburg II's opening game 0-0 FT. doesn't bode well for him that a Midfielder on loan (1 year older) and a Midfielder 1 year younger both prefered over him to be XI. Than club played 2 older M over him too. not even full squad too as 4 II players still with 1st.
'02 Maximilian Dietz made his pro debut yesterday for SC Freiburg II in the 3. Liga. The New York-born defensive mid was an unused sub for the US at the last U17 World Cup. https://t.co/lMP1NnBSJk— ChuckMe92 Soccer (@ChuckMe92Soccer) December 13, 2021
